Music is everything [EP3 Spoilers]

edited March 2014 in The Walking Dead

The soundtrack has a major impact for games and movies, and for some bizarre reason TTG chose to have no music in the trailer for In Harm's Way. Did anyone else find this weird?

When I first saw the trailer with no music it felt boring and I thought the episode would suck.

Then I recorded the trailer, whacked it into Sony Vegas and added the 'Kenny's Last Stand' music from S1, and whaddya know, it looks so much better:

Anyone think this was an oversight from telltale? It feels like there should've been music in the trailer.

  • no that you mention it, i realize how i thought the trailer was less interesting, but when you play better music it makes it that much better.

  • Yeah, soundtracks are supposed to set up the tension and emotion of a scene, and without it the Ep3 trailer feels like there's not as much at stake and we don't really notice how bad things really are.

  • i found the soundtrack was really well chosen for the episode 3 trailer it really set a tone of darkness which helped show how much all of them just lost after being caught by carver, nevertheless i do like this theme but i don't think it fits as much as the old one did :3

I'm not sure if I read that right but my original point was that the ep3 trailer didn't have any music..?

    UGH THOSE ZOMBIES;

Always wearing the same shoes since episode 1 from season 1. -__-

  • Take in consideration that this isn't really a trailer as much as it is a preview into next episode, just like at the end of Episode 1: All that Remains, the "trailer" for A House Divided did not contain any music either.

  • Nice work, it really does make the trailer feel more epic, especially when Kenny speaks because it's sorta his theme. I wish I can use Sony Vegas, but it always leaves watermark whenever I try to edit videos (Which I love doing - Editing Videos) but I only use the trail version, FML -_- I can't use WMV (Both versions) because they always crash.

  • i know right, they should seriously stop by jcpenny or SOMETHING and get them self some heals or sandles for gods sake.

Interesting. For me, the preview had music. It was similar to Episode 2's new slide theme:

It's a little soft in this video, but it was louder for me. I like the dark feel it gives for the events to come, even though it's probably not the most spectacular choice.

  • That's odd. I've seen a few versions where the music didn't trigger, which is weird. Perhaps it's dependent on what platform you're using?

  • Yeah, he can live if you persuade Kenny not to take a shot at Carver.

  • Actually A House Divided did have music, unless you turned off the BGM in the options menu.

Yeah, the Episode 3 trailer does have a score. It's subtle, and understated, but there's definitely a steady "pulse" underneath the trailer to drive the tension and dark tone. You also have to remember where this trailer appears in context. The episode leaves you on an emotional note as we see the group being rounded up and the camera pushes in to see the emotion on Clem's face. That, along with the fact that the emphasis of the trailer was on Carver's speech, I think called for a more subdued trailer that didn't have an overpowering score. It lets the emotion from the episode carry over, and gives the trailer a real sense of dread.

I do like your cut up of the trailer though.

  • yes it did have music :3

  • I've seen versions of the trailer with that subtle score, but I'm pretty sure I didn't get the music on my playthrough of the game.

And now that I think about it, maybe I should've gone for something a bit more subtle than 'Kenny's Final Stand', but I do like the stings/booms in that track.
