Actually the comics refer to them as "zombies" several times. It's probably the most common term for them as a whole. "Lurkers", "biters", "walkers" etc are the subtypes of zombies, referring to the way that they seem to behave. It's a shorthand to convey the most useful piece of information.
I don't know if you'd call them zombies because this is in a realistic environment, and don't "zombies" want to eat brains? It's not possibl… moree to have a disease in which you just want to eat the brain, But you can have a disease in which you don't recognize your friends and family, and that makes you hungry for flesh. TWD zombies only eat like intestines and stuff right? So that doesn't technically make them "zombies,".
