  • Yeah I've been confused about this for awhile.

  • I thought only Larry said it Once, Nice find !

  • Yeah i find it a little odd that they say zombie since i read on the walking dead wiki that zombies don,t exist in their pop culture that is why they call them everything under the sun but zombie.

They do sometimes use the word zombie in the comics but like you said zombie pop culture doesn't exist in TWD universe.

  • In ep.1 Shawn says "It's not like in the movies" and Larry says "we've all seen this happen before!"

this isn't the first time this has happened if I remember right Rick says zombie instead of walker a couple of times in the comics maybe kirkman went back on the whole zombie movies don't exist in the walking dead thing

  • Yeah, he says it multiple times. Just a dialogue error, most likely. I wonder if it was intentional since Kirkman admitted to making the same mistake in the comics, but it was most likely just a slip up.

  • I've only heard Lee say it but I don't think they ever say it in the show.

  • In unused voice clips of the game for Episode 2 Lee says something about zombies and Mark says "If you start throwing the word zombie around then before long you'll begin to believe anything can exist... wolfmen or..." (which made me laugh because of A Wolf Among Us)
Pretty sure it's a mistake but nice find nevertheless!

  • Where and how specifically does Lee say it?

  • I know, he says something about Doug not being good around Zombies, though it's not actually very important.

  • They were talking about who should go to help Glenn. "I think you've got your family here to worry about and Doug isn't good around zombies."

I think he only says it once, and in the comics it's not a mistake, it's because up until the second book they didn't have a name for them, then Rick started calling them Roamers. Still, for quite a while after that they alternate between zombies or roamers.

  • It's not a mistake in the comics, for about the first 9 or 10 books, they call them zombies very oftenly, and then after that they almost aonly call them roamers with a few people(Heath) who calls them walkers.

Actually, zombie pop culture doesn't exist in the AMC Universe, in the Skybound/Telltale Universe it exists, the characters just think it's silly to call them zombies. In the third book, when Rick is talking to one of the prisoners, he says something along the lines of, "I guess we've been calling them zombies, though it took us a while to get used to saying it with a straight face."

After that point, they start to call them roamers more often, and by Vol. 10, they basically completely stop using the word zombie.

  • If you examine the walker kid in the attic in episode 4, the examination says something like "zombie child". I could be wrong, but that's from what I remember.

  • It's not an error. They call them zombies sometimes. Happens in the comics too, early on. Someone (Rick?) mentions that it feels silly to call them that, so I'd guess that's why they phase it out for other words.

  • No you are right it does say zombie child.

  • Do they ever call them Walkers in the comics, or is it just Roamers? (I'm up to the 5th Hardcover book)

  • Yes i think that was a mistake because they dont use it in twd universe.

  • They say it a few times early on in the comics, I guess the writers can't help it

  • It also says "stomp, shoot etc zombie" when you are about to kill the boy in the attic

  • I remember Rick telling someone (I think it was Tyreese) in one of the early volumes, that they categorize the zombies into two groups. Roamers, that wander around looking for prey, and Lurkers, who wait for someone to get close enough to bite. Since Lurkers don't walk around the term isn't used very often in the comics.
It seems like every group comes up with their own term. Woodbury used the term "biters", some Groups call them Walkers...

Same in the game. Lee's group is using the term Walkers. The cabin-group calls them Lurkers, but Clem is still calling them Walkers.

  • i always thought that Kirkman wanted to 'franchise' the name 'walkers',im used to calling them that word now because of the game, but they are zombies....Kirkman owes his fortune to Romero...

  • Unfortunately for Kirkman i heard that apparently George Romero hates the walking dead or something.

At least twice. He says it when you examine the locked door, he says it when he says Doug's not comfortable around them. I'm sure he said it one more time, but I could be wrong.

As for the comics, if "zombie" media isn't supposed to exist in this world, why would "zombie" ever become a name in the first place? And why change it at all if that's the most apt term for such creatures? Considering the universe (as according to Kirkman, anyway), it's a mistake.

Robert Kirkman only said that zombie pop culture doesn't exist in the AMC Universe, it does exist in the Skybound/Telltale Universe. It's explained why they start to call them Roamers, Biters, Lurkers, or Walkers instead of Zombies in the third book. When Rick is talking to one of the prisoners, Dexter, he says something along the lines of, "I guess we've been calling them zombies, but it took us a while to say it with a straight face.

So basically... They find the term "zombie" to be silly.

Also, what locked door are you referring to?

  • They do meet another group who calls them walkers, but they quickly start using the term roamers along with Rick's group. Walkers is still seldom used.
