Is Luke's character based off of AJ Locascio?

Do you think Telltale based Luke's character off of AJ Locascio as a tribute to him being the former host of the Playing Dead?

You cannot deny the resemblance.

  • Why does everyone always think Luke's appearance was based of someone? But not gonna lie, he does have a bit of a resemblance to Telltale's own Marty Mcfly. I think it could only be the way that picture's taken though.

Nope, he was not. His concept art reference was actually Ryan Kwanten from True Blood.

  • I really miss AJ. Greg's voice just manages to hit every last one of my berserk buttons.

  • I don't see the resemblance.

Tell me about it. AJ was polite to his guests, didn't interrupt them, compassionate about the game, didn't make fun of almost every single character and was just an all-around good guy. Oh don't forget Greg's stupid jokes about Ugly Betty.

There's one photo I'm looking at right now in our database that looks a lot like Luke. That said, Luke's design changed a fair amount during the production of episode 1 - he was originally wearing Nick's hat, and his current hair was actually Nick's hair.

  • If you say so, but in my mind he will always be AJ.

    P. S.
Hope this isn't too intrusive, but do you guys sometimes change a character's appearance drastically between episodes (like if it's a newly revealed character)? I'm referring to a slight overhaul. Bigger nose, smaller chin, etc.

  • Some people can pull off the douchebag persona quite well, but Greg ain't one of them.

  • Holy shit Nick was adorable. Thank god they switched the hairs. I'm not sure if I would've been able to handle it.

  • Looks like Telltale just couldn't handle the awesomeness of two main protagonists (Clem and Luke) wearing caps.

  • Yeah, to me he looks like a mix of Porter and AJ.

  • Yeah there is some resemblance, especially the hair. He does look like Ryan Kwanten a bit, as well as Scott Porter.

That Luke looks more like original Luke than Nick looks like original Nick. Original Nick had brown hair as well, and a lot less shadows around his eyes.

It was actually that we didn't want both Luke and Kenny to be wearing caps.

We don't usually change the structure of a character's face, because it risks messing up animations too much. Though Season 1 episode 3 Lilly has a different face than she did in episodes 1 and 2, that's probably the biggest change - I forget the reason why, honestly. Carley also was originally not very pretty (IMO), but over the course of episode 1's development they softened her features and got better looking.

    Ah, that's interesting.

Ignoring my joke above, I kind of figured it was just some on-the-fly change you guys decided looked better. Did this happen with other characters, or Luke and Nick only?

With appearances, no one other than Luke and Nick changed much - originally, they were both brown-haired white dudes, just one had a hat. As production went on, we realized we needed to differentiate them more.

Other times characters will change appearance is if we cast a voice actor we like, and then realize their voice doesn't quite fit the model once you start seeing them in game - we had to thicken up Carver for that reason, he was originally a bit thinner.

  • When you say "originally, they were both brown-haired white dudes", do you mean that one of them is no longer white? Because I know a handful of people who have wondered if Nick is mixed race or otherwise nonwhite, including myself.

Well, here's what I got. Didn't have much space to work with, and I'm not sure if the hair is light/dark enough or not.

Naw, we just called them both our generic white dudes for awhile because everyone kept getting them confused.

  • It's so cool finding all this stuff out. I like the hairstyles they got stuck with in the final version [Luke's makes him look a bit more softer looking in appearance without the cap, while Nick looks like a friendly geek ^^]

I have a question, was Carver's original model that guy we see in the green coat with him? Because in the preview he was the one that answered the door and not the Carver we saw when the episode finally came out.

  • So.. it was completely intentional to make Luke handsome then, if they were basing him on Ryan Kwanten? Interesting.

I wonder if Nick had any real-life reference.
