They were a homosexual couple. A Telltale staff member confirmed it.
When a man describes another man as his partner, and they aren't police officers or in business together or some other such circumstance, you can safely assume they're in a romantic relationship.
On first note, I thought that they were just friends. Later, I realized that Walt and Matthew was a couple because Walt called him "partner" and the way he reacted when he learned of his death. I like the way, Telltale handle it. They didn't directly told us in the game and let us come to our own conclusion.
They were a couple, I imagine Kenny's conversation with them:
Well that's a "le Walter surprise" to me
That's probably why Kenny brought up the 'you sure do look like a match' joke to Luke and Nick, because he'd been living under the same roof as Walter and Matthew and wanted to casual bring up the comment to see if Luke and Nick were in a relationship too.
Secretly though I think Kenny ships them, them and Walter and Matthew XD

I thought they were friends when I played it, only after I was in the forums I learned they were gay.
I'm still very surprised by the fact that people didn't think they were a couple. Maybe it was obvious to me because I'm used to homosexual pairings, but whatever.
Maybe a few people just didn't want to believe it's true, who knows what kind of assholes exist these days

It just never crossed my mind to be honest. I can be pretty oblivious at times. Now that I know, I think it's cute and soooo much sadder that they both died
they did not deserve such a sad ending but I guess everyone gets one in the end in the world of the walking dead.
