Seems more likely it'd be the other way around. Nick's the one who got defensive about the comment, and he's expressed having both a reverence and a jealousy for Luke that Luke doesn't seem to reciprocate.
Personally, I used to kind of ship it but nowadays I don't really want to see them together, because I think Luke kind of patronizes Nick and I don't think they would make a healthy couple. But I'm kind of sick of the fact that every time someone brings up Luke/Nick, which honestly does have a lot of validity in it, everyone jumps at their throat like it's a dirty word, and it's nothing but "Stop making posts like this you're so gross they're close like brothers this is just as bad as Cluke!!!" It's ridiculous. Carlee was nothing but subtext and flirtation but people treat it like it's canon, so what's the difference between that and Nuke?
I've also noticed some strange tension between Luke and Nick, but I doubt it's anything... romantic. Besides, what would it matter if they were gay? I get how Cluke makes people uncomfortable because of the element of pedophilia, but why are people so angry about Nick and Luke? It's the 21st Century; the idea of homosexuality has become quite common. I could actually care less if they became an item, but I don't let it bother me, anyways.
It could be that the stress of Carver taking them captive again and having to watch Uncle Pete die (for both Nick and Luke, since Luke was Pete's friend and knew him since before the apocalypse along with Nick) along with having to watch Nick's mom die, considering it would've been sometime as short as 1-9 months ago, (taking into account that they left sometime after Rebeca fell pregnant and she is now very close to giving birth)
These factors could've motivated them to realise that they don't have that much more time left together and should say that they really do love each other before it's too late.
Keep in mind I'm kinda neutral to whether they should stay best friends or become lovers, but it wouldn't be bad writing to me if luke and Nick got together. Hell, it would seem natural.
Luke and Nick have no reason to keep a relationship like that a secret... It's the apocalypse. Plus, it's been two years: they wouldn't be keeping it a secret still, that would be bad writing.
