  • Yeah? Maybe I should speak Ukrainian or Russian using transliteration, hmm? That would make everyone scratch their heads.

You could have just said Pravoslavie instead. It would have sounded much cooler to an English-speaking audience and had them scratching their heads for a good while. ;-)

I'm appalled that a family can be like that to the odd one out. This is why I'm cautious about religious people, because this is what I usually think. Not that it's true, of course. Most religious people are respectful enough of other people's beliefs, but it's hard not to think of this kind of thing when I hear the word 'religion'. Also, tell your friend I hope things turn out OK for him and that his family accepts who he his, because they're not much of a family if they don't.

A good friend of mine is an atheist and his family has made it their personal mission to convert him and save his soul from damnation. Anyti

Right, and there is nothing biological that supports a claim of inferiority in either case. Modern science has shown that a person's brain capability is not determined by race or gender. Modern science has also shown that race isn't a determination on physical prowess, and that physical prowess depends on the genetics and physical condition of the individual rather a blanket determination by gender.

  • What I'm saying is that how could the cause of everything that exists be from science? Because something had to create science, the laws of physics and everything else that people know about today. And to your question, what created God? Well that's the whole point of agnosticism, that we won't ever know that, at least not for a very very long time.

    AusZombie posted: »

Also I know you are agnostic but the argument you putt forth to me is an argument from ignorance. Basically what I mean by that is just because science hasn't explained abiogenesis it doesn't mean that a creator is more plausible.

I think that a higher power is possible (I'm personally a member of the Universal Life Church, as I believe that all religions, and science, are compatible), but I also believe that it's possible that things could have been created without one.

Infinity is a strange concept for humans to grasp, but it does exist. The mathematical pi, for example, is an irrational number, meaning it has an infinite amount of decimal expansions. Space is believed to be infinite, to have no beginning and no end. Time is believed to be infinite as well. So, if time and space are infinite, it's not possible for there to be a beginning (or an end), just as it's not possible to find a final decimal for pi (something mathematicians have discovered after trying to find an end for years, and still are, fruitlessly, through the use of computers).

We know that our universe (at least as we know it now, with suns, stars, planets, asteroids, and such) had a beginning, so our universe is most likely very young in the scheme of things. There are a lot of theories about the beginning of our universe, but that's a thread for another day (actually, the last time a religion thread was started here, a science thread started up soon afterward because of this line of thought, so I wouldn't be surprised if history repeated itself).

What I'm saying is that how could the cause of everything that exists be from science? Because something had to create science, the laws of

  • l am shocked no one said Muslims (nothing against them of course)

  • Yes exactly, people go on and on about how asians are good at math and black people are good at basketball, women can't be leaders etc. the truth is these people are born and raised in a society that has certain expectations thrusted upon them. I know for a fact that plenty of women would be fantastic leaders and there are plenty of black people who would be fantastic at math, there are plenty of asians who would be fantastic at basketball.

I know this is a huge over simplification but I just wanted to say how society thrusting expectations on people isn't right.

Science is what we use to understand how the world works, science didn't create life! The laws of physics were laid out in the creation of the universe, the best explanation we have for what created the universe is the big bang theory. For all we know there may be countless other universes all with their own unique laws of physics. To just say god did it isn't good enough especially when science is uncovering more every day.

What I'm saying is that how could the cause of everything that exists be from science? Because something had to create science, the laws of

  • Right but before the universe, or universes, were created, there had to be space for them to take up. So what created that space? It's true what Jennifer said: Infinity is hard to grasp.

I'm a Pastafarian. But i usualy tell people that i'm muslim just for the sake of lulz.

  • Christian. I was brought up as a Catholic but when I read Bible and a few Seventh-day Adventist books I changed my mind. Can't tell I'm a Seventh-day Adventist member because I also disagree with much of their stuff.

  • Rofl, can't make up your mind? I knew a seventh-day adventist once, he was a bloody legend.

I have heard of the church of the flying spaghetti monster before, what can I say? I'm sold :P

Have you heard of this theory of gravity nonsense? It was intelligent falling, it has nothing to do with gravity, his noodliness pulls us down to the ground with his noodly appendages.

All hail our saint Edward Teach :)

  • Don't worry about it. Many people hate Muslims simply because of something that happened over a decade ago. Now don't get me wrong, 911 was very tragic and horrifying, but saying that every Muslim likes to bomb people is like every German is a Nazi. No one should hate you because you're a Muslim.
