Does the long wait strengthen our feelings towards the characters? especially Clem?

edited May 2014 in The Walking Dead
I played the first season once all episodes were out and beat it in one or two sittings. I read that people flipped their shit at Carley's or Doug's death but i really didnt feel much about them. Same goes for katja or duck. I felt bad for them but not as much as most people who played from day 1. When Lee died i only shed a small tear.

Now fast forward 7 or 8 months and i'm into my first week of waiting for episode 2 of season 2. I've become insanely obsessed over TWD and Clementine. Every single day I'm constantly thinking about the next episode, about wanting to protect Clementine, etc.

Now after all this waiting and obsessing over TWD i decide to fire up season 1. I get to Clem's house and read the voice message and start crying. I get to the pharmacy room and start crying. I give the apple to Clem and start crying. I push Clem on the swing and start crying. I see her sleeping with Lee in the RV and start crying. And you know the rest of all these scenes with Lee and Clem, im not even going to talk about the ending.

So now ive been asking myself if i would have reacted with stronger feelings towards these scenes if i had actually waited for each episode back then. What do you think? Is the wait actually a good thing?

Yeah i may sound like a lil crybaby bitch but im not gay and i barely ever cry in my life as im pretty close to being a sociopath. You all know how powerful this game is.

  • I think you are right.

At first I didn't have that much opinion about Nick. In fact, I thought he was like Ben. Over time as I keep thinking about his history, character and relations, I realized that he is the most characterized of the Cabin Group and suddenly he quickly becomes my favorite character of Season 2.

PS: You are not a sociopath. You have feelings and emotions like the rest of us. :)
  • I can see why you might think that. but I don't think that's the case. Not with me at least. I am positive that my fondness of the characters was formed right after playing the episode and hasn't changed in any way since the last time I played. If anything, it might have become a little weaker, since the wait is so long and I start to forget things about them. I can say for sure that for me, the characters grow more and more uninteresting the more I have to wait.
  • Yes i notice it also happens in Season 2 after some weeks. For example with Pete and Walter. First time i played episode 1 i only felt a little bit bad about the fact that he got bit. Episode 2 comes out and im genuinely feeling like shit once i find him dead. Then Walter dies and im only like "aww nooo". 5 weeks later i replay episode 2 again i feel just like how i felt towards Pete. For some strange reason even though i really liked Omid i dont really feel anything about his death. Goes to show how bad that was written.

  • I had the same situation as you, OP, I played Season 1 only after Episode 5 was released, by that time I knew who would die or live, so the only death that kinda got to me was Lee's.

As for strengthening my feelings towards something, well, the only feeling TellTale strengthens with this long wait is hate.

  • Every episode I love Clemy more and more and its one more sadder to see, what the ZA did to our little, cute treehouse girl, if you playing now season1 again
  • I basically played through the first season in one day, which I shouldn't have done but I was really hooked so don't blame me. I prefer waiting for episodes like this rather than playing through all 5 like I did with Season 1.
  • I was in shock and disbelief when that scene happened the first time. I think the scene itself was well done, but the leading up to it could have been done better. They could have made more interaction happen between Christa and Omid before the scene happen.

  • But one month waiting would be enough :-)

  • Playing through all episodes of the season would be a better option for me personally, since it doesn't require 2-3 months waiting for each episode. But yeah I guess that it would make you like/hate characters more if you wait for each episode to release and think about what happened in the previous episode. Like Larry for example, if I played through the season at once I wouldn't have been too bothered with him hating me. But when I was waiting for Episode 2 to come out I was so mad at him you couldn't even believe. My hate for him increasing over the waiting time, and luckily we got to smash his head in with a salt lick in Episode 2, but I sided with Lilly because I didn't want Clem to see me destroy his brain.

But I think it does affect how you see characters if you wait for the episodes or not. It's like now I'm waiting for Episode 3 of Season Two to see who is going to be at Carver's camp, and how Clem and Sarah will fight against walkers and team up together. I want to see how their friendship will progress/deteriorate depending on Clem's actions
  • I cried the first time through, probably because of the wait. I had just an instant attachment to Clementine because she's the only child character that's aware of what's going on and she's not used like a fucking prop, like season two Carl was...
  • 1 month per episode would be the perfect formula.

  • Yes I think it does. I really feel worried about Clementine and the other characters, I just don't know what to do.
  • It strengthens the relationship, for sure. Hell, now when ever I see anything with Clem and Lee in the same picture, my feels hurt. It's a powerful game, and major props to Telltale.
  • Ive waited for every episode and I never felt quite that emotional. The only time I really wanted to cry was when Lee started dying.
  • It certainly makes me go crazy coming up with theories, that's for sure.

Real answer, I think it definitely does. I think a lot about S1 too. Man, TTG is sooo good at telling a good story. Successful kill-offs? Man I wish I could pull those off.
  • oh, i absolutely agree. when i played episode one i hated nick's GUTS, i went with pete because i hoped that nick would die. now after playing episode 2 and mulling over his character for a few months, surprise surprise nick is my favorite new character of season 2 (and on my top 5 walking dead characters of all time list)
  • I played all of season 1 in one go, and I got seriously invested in the characters and story. Having to wait between episodes just makes me forget what choices I played and I feel less strongly about this season because of the waiting.
