Do We Still Think Sarah's Mentally Challenged?

Because there was a lot of speculation on that prior to Episode 2, and it seems to have died down. Buy now she seems normal enough to me.

  • I wouldn't say she is mentally challenged. Her odd behavior probably stems from her being very sheltered.
  • I don't think she is mentally challenged, her father just sheltered her to keep her innocence, that is why she acts so immature.
  • I would never have jumped to that conclusion, but at 15 I would have thought she would have been a little more perceptive about what's really going on - and maybe a little more rebellious about being shut out like she is.

Still, I don't really think there's anything wrong with her.
  • She seems fine to me, just socially awkward and sheltered. She does have anxiety at the very least. (Couldn't breath when Carver was knocking on the house door in EP2)
  • Read the novel ''Among The Hidden'' It will describe the type of person Sarah is. She in no way mentally challenge. The novel is about a boy named Luke whose parents forbid him to go out in the world. He can only stay in his house and room because he would be killed and scared from the outside world if he ever stepped outside. They call these children shadow children. So yea due to Sarah not being able to go outside because of Carlos she doesn't know what the world is like which explains her behavior. That's why Sarah thought Clem was the same age because she was never exposed to other children. Now when a shadow child goes outside this will cause mental trauma. Sarah will be traumatized that explains the eye of the storm trophy. Sarah is a shadow child, and is not mentally challenge at all...
  • I just think she panics alot and when she panics she gets REALLY severe panic attacks.
  • The weirdest thing about her is the fact that she gets panic attacks.
  • I read that book once. I didn't read any of the sequels, but I read that one.

  • "Mentally-challenged" is kind of a crude and passe term. A lot of people prefer "neuroatypical". But anyway.

I mean... a lot of people who actually HAVE Asperger's identify with her, and consider her representation for fans on the autism spectrum. It's not so much a theory about her as it is also people wanting to see characters who they can relate to. Much like how gay fans were excited to see Walter and Matthew, fans who are neuroatypical are looking to Sarah as their representation.

Carlos isn't exactly trying to shelter Clementine--it's not just something he feels like he needs to do with every child. There would need to be something inherent about Sarah that would make him say "she isn't like you, she's different."

No , the moment she met Clem , the fact that Sarah asked her to teach her how to use a gun means that she will eventually grow up .
  • Whatever she is, she's still annoying.
  • edited May 2014
Hm no, she seems normal. She's a good kid too, if Clem takes the blame for the photo, she'll deny it instantly, and say it was her.
She also backs Clem up when she says she tried to lock the door.

And if you say "You told me to distract her!" , she gets really upset and yells at her dad about how he's always treating her like an idiot. It seems that she does notice that Carlos treats her like she's not capable of doing anything.

Really, I think she's normal, the one with a problem is Carlos, trying to shelter her so much, treating her like she's never going to grow up.
Her "problem" which causes her to "cease to function" seems to be that she has severe panic attacks under pressure.
  • How are you mentally challenged if you have Aspergers? Do you even know what you're talking about? Seriously... do some research. She doesn't have Aspergers because she doesn't seem nervous when talking to Clementine so please do your research next time.

  • I never tought she was mentally challenged. I don't know where people got that from. She did creep me out a little bit, though.
  • When people said "mentally challenged" they meant "retarded". I don't think Asperger's is retarded. And I don't think Sarah even has Asperger's. She just seems a little lonely and shy.

  • Has anyone discussed that she might just have anxiety issues? Remember when Carver showed up? And if you tell her her dad is gone she freaks out a bit?
  • Nobody know's as we not seen Sarah near a walker which episode 3 will show us
  • We have Carlos to thank for that. He has the best intentions for his daughter, and perhaps circumstances forced him to become more protective. However, the insular world he created will hinder her development. She may be a liability during a crisis, or if Carlos is unable to watch over her.

Had he not met Chuck and taken his advice, Lee might have became similar to Carlos.

  • You know this whole zombie thing has only been going on for a couple years. Presumably, she wasn't locked inside away from the world before that unless Carlos is actually some completely overprotective psycho even before the dead started walking. Never been exposed to other children? Highly unlikely.

  • I think Sarah is normal. From what I have seen so far, she doesn't feel odd or mentally disturb. She has problem with anxiety, but it seems fairly normal to me. Also, I like Sarah. She is kinda a mixture of Duck's naivety and enthusiasm and Clem's innocent and kindness.
  • she's just sheltered
  • She's not exposed to the walkers as much yet, because of Carlos of course
  • I thought she was autism, but now I think she's has anxiety.
  • >autism

There's that word again. I sincerely doubt that Sarah's autistic or anything of the sort. What's going on with her is that she likely has a lot of anxiety problems, but it's not known at this point to whether she had those problems before the apocalypse, or whether it was entirely Carlos' fault for her behavior. And 'mentally challenged' shouldn't be confused with Asperger's.

Seriously, where did people get the idea that she's autistic? One of the mods on the Walking Dead wiki edited it? Because that makes COMPLETE sense.

By "mentally challenged" (which I think is an offensive phrasing) I assumed they meant neuroatypical, which is what Asperger's falls under--it's under the autism spectrum. A lot of fans with Asperger's think Sarah has it. I'm going off of what they've been saying.

  • The word "retarded" is an offensive and old-fashioned way to refer to people. Please don't use that term to describe someone.

  • Well they're wrong. Load up Wikipedia. She doesn't seem thingy when talking to Clem, so that about sums it all up. She is... meh... slow then. Because since when the fuck does a 15-year-old start saying "OH SOME RANDOM GIRL COMES INTO HOUSE, MEH FRIEND NOW?" No one says that, that's just... werid.

  • How are they wrong? They HAVE Asperger's, they HAVE autism. They're living with that. Wikipedia can't tell them about their lives and their experiences, and neither can you.

There's nothing wrong with people wanting to think that a fictional character is like them. Even if it may not necessarily be canon, you don't need to tell people they're "wrong" for just wanting to relate to a character. It's the same reason I believe Nick has depression, because I've suffered from that and I like to think that his brain works the same way as mine because it comforts me to have a character I can relate to. That's not a bad thing.

  • I can so shush, and it's kinda obvious Wikipedia is correct for two reasons but fuck that anyway. She is NOT Autistic. FACT. That's the whole point of having it. You're not good at socialising but you KNOW how to do it. She can talk easily to Clementine and the group. And that's it. She is 15, and acts like 10. That's it.

  • Oow big man read Wikipedia, now he knows all about autism! Alright lemme go read up on heart surgery--fuck medical school, all I need is to read an article and that will make me an expert!

Listen. You're not a psychologist, you're not a writer for Telltale, you're not a person living with autism. You don't know jack. You're just a kid who read Wikipedia--not even a valid source, for Christ's sake, don't you listen to your teachers? You can't state anything as a fact here.

Get over yourself and let fans with autism have their fucking headcanons.

  • Arh... do I really have to say this again? I have Aspergers, I just said that in the previous post for fuck sake. So now do you see pal? It's a fucking fact. There easily talking bollocks if they think she has it because she does not. If you don't trust Wikipedia go on some deep web science site to back it up.

  • Oh yeah! My teacher read that to the class in the fifth grade! We got to the second book I think. And then we found out that one kid at the school also had to be a third child and all our minds were blown.

  • Actually yes. There were a lot of people speculating that after Episode One because of the pinkie swears and aliens and the fact that she was 15.

Did we ever think that to begin with?

  • edited May 2014
I jumped to some conclusions a while back that included a mental disorder (i.e. mild bi-polar), but seeing how she acted in episode two, I'm not really sure anymore. She knows Carlos is sheltering her too much and feels patronized because of it, but otherwise her reaction to Sarita's story shows that she's not at all mentally challenged, and might be trying to prove herself able or deserving of helping others.

Honestly, we don't have much of a known history with her aside from a few interactions, but I'm sure episode 3 will reveal a lot more.
  • I'm sorry for making assumptions, that was wrong of me. But nevertheless, it doesn't change my stance that people are allowed to view a character in any way they wish. There doesn't need to be facts to back up harmlessly wanting to see a character be like you.
