from what ive seen carver isnt THAT bad a guy, i mean if you chose to surrender you will hear him say this to alvin "Hi, Alvin. Do you remember George, Alvin? You see, I do. I remember a guy that was your friend named George. I remember when you murdered him in cold blood. And why? Because you didn't like me? You could have lodged a complaint. You could have been civil.", Rebecca also mentions that if alvin finds out its not his baby he will murder her. and to top it off in the new clip on the playing dead, the new character says that despite what Clem may have seen or heard, Carvers camp is not actually as bad as it seems

DONT STICK UP FOR HIM
That said, I see Carver more as a machiavel then a bad guy.
(Pete won't give you a cigarette if you ask him)
Clementine doesn't have anything to do with Carter but the new group decided to take Clementine with them, to involve her in their drama. Now she is in this situation and she is pretty much the outsider from both sides. In my opinion they should of never let Clementine get involved in this situation.

Carver is extremely smart with fantastic strategy skills, to the point where he can merely glance at a chessboard and predict the final outcome. His line "If they don't trust you, how can you trust them?" is a legitimate piece of advice, but I think he said it to implant mistrust of the cabin group in Clem's mind, i.e. manipulating her. The cabin group may not be entirely reliable, but still, I'd trust them any day over Carver.
I'm sure his camp is safe and well-fortified. It's Carver himself that is the problem. His proclivity for violence, ruthlessness, and severe punishment is probably what drove the cabin group away. Also, I'm pretty sure Rebecca wasn't being serious when she said he would kill her, and for the time being I would take Carver's words on the Alvin-George situation with a grain of salt. We don't know what actually happened or why Alvin would do something like that, and Carver isn't a reliable narrator.
