Something I noticed about Luke

edited May 2014 in The Walking Dead
So, basically he's never shot anyone. He never even drew his gun when Matthew did OR when Kenny was literally holding his whole group at gunpoint. The only time he finally draws on someone is when it's Carver, and even when you tell him to shoot (like I did) he freaks out a little bit and doesn't do it. In fact, he acts like thats totally out of the question.
So what do you guys think? Do you think this will play a part in future episodes?

  • Maybe he never used a gun or sucks at it?

Well the whole gun thing at Kenny's group has a pretty valid point. He didn't want to pull his gun out while someone had a gun pointed at him, would lead to a nasty war. And I'm pretty sure Luke just doesn't want to kill people. But yeah, I think he's not going to be the kind of person who can even do a mercy killing. Remember how he reacts if you tell him you killed Sam? He flips.
  • Maybe. He seems more of a human pacifist, which is definitely a clashing trait with Kenny's more psychopathic side.

Another thing I kinda thought about was that, the guy hadn't eaten since the peaches and beans in the lodge. He hadn't slept on the first day in Camp Carver, so maybe he got some winks in while hiding, but the guy still hasn't eaten in 2 whole days. He also mentioned that Carver scavenged everything around his HQ, meaning there isn't anything to eat within a large radius. All the food and resources were with Carver. That means, unless they hunt an animal, or find something Carver missed, Luke is going to die from starvation WHILE within the group! I didn't see anyone sneak a bag of chips on their way out, did you?
  • Maybe he's just like Shawn. Except he can kill walkers, just not living breathing people.
  • After playing episode 3 , and watching the preview to episode 4, I think he's a pussy.
  • well, you can last a pretty long time without food. i can see him collapsing or something in the next episode though, this guy is not looking too great.

  • yeah i've always noticed that he tried to avoid conflict as much as possible. he always tries to get people to calm down instead of fighting them (unless they REALLY provoke him, like kenny did during dinner in episode 2)

  • I also choose the "just shoot him already" response with Carver, and I was kind of surprised by Luke's reaction, but in a way, it made me respect him, because it reminded me a little of the path my version of Lee might have taken in season one.

At this point in my playthrough, though, I'm done with that particular "stare into the abyss" moral conflict. Carver was a fucking asshole. I wasn't really down with beating his head in--I just wanted to shoot him. But oh well.
  • I kind of thought he was bit for most of the episode...... I guess not given how much time passed, he sure looked like it though

Well he's a good man, but he'd do it if he has to.
  • Die of starvation? That's a bit of a stretch. The human body can go without food for around a month—if anything he'll die from dehydration, that can kill you pretty quick, and the human body tends to use up more water when you've been exerting yourself. Or lack of sleep, but usually a person would collapse out of exhaustion before they got to that point, you'd have to be forcibly keeping yourself awake to actually die.

I'm sure they'll find food somehow, maybe not straight away, but in the course of a month at least. If anything Luke'll end up fainting out of exhaustion and/or weakness, which I can actually see happening.

  • He just dosent want to kill people.
  • I don't think he's ever killed another living person before. And there is a difference between killing walkers and killing people.

He was pissed that Clem killed a dog back in EP1, remember?
"You don't kill dawgs, man :("

It's no surprise that he's super against taking people's lives , as well.
I think that'll turn out to be his biggest weakness. He's unable to kill people. A bit TOO good-natured, you know?

What Sarita said about Walter and Matthew in the lodge, can be used on Luke. "Honestly, it's dangerous to be this kind nowadays. But they just can't help it."

And we all know how they both ended up.
  • Wow you're an idiot.

    He doesn't like killing people.
He got angry at Clem when she said she killed Sam the dog, and he ran away from Kenny when Kenny tried to start sniping at Carvers group.
He also, despite all that happened, refused to shoot Carver.

This is a noble thing, but will end up killing him in the long run.

HOWEVER, something I just thought of: Could he be working for the bad guys in the shadows? Is that why he refused to shoot any bad guy?

    Theory:
What if Carver and Luke are on the same side? Carver has Luke lie and pretend to be running from the hardware store group. Maybe Carver informed Luke not to hurt anyone at the Lodge, so thats why Luke didn't shoot Matt? Luke also mysteriously vanished during the attack at the Lodge. Maybe he was taking care of unfinished business? Perhaps later on, Luke, while Clem is doing everything she is doing, talked with Bonnie and decides to Betray Carver? I mean, come on. How could Carver and the others honestly track the group up to the lodge for FIVE days without being noticed? Luke knew and must have informed them.
  • I'm actually glad that Luke didn't want to kill Carver. I like that he has issues with killing actual people. Someone in another thread mentioned that Luke represents holding onto your humanity in the apocalypse, while Kenny represents giving into brutality. I think this is a great contrast, especially when it comes to who we side with as Clementine.
