Shes African American, its been confirmed by staff.

Read this about creating Clementine www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2012/12/26/creating-clementine.aspx

These threads never end well so it will probably be locked soon.
  • I wouldn't say her mom is Caucasian. She doesn't appear to be from the Caucasus mountains at all! Sorry, bad joke.
Her mom does look slightly mixed, though.

I thought she was mixed. Her dad looks African-American, and her mom looks Caucasian or mixed.

  • it's a very complicated and controversial question... some here just hate to talk abt racial stuff, esp abt Clem's race.

I personally think that she's (mostly) white.
  • Ok, Ty.

  • I changed the discoussion so the discussion won't went bad.
  • There have been countless discussions about this. She was written as african american, and is black as far as the cannon goes. But she was given caucasian features to make her more palatable to the primary audience of the game, which is white males 18-36. Its happens in entertainment media all the time.
  • I swear, she has nothing to do with the Caucasus mountains!

  • Why is it controversial? It's a simple question. Why does every question regarding race/ethnicity suddenly have to be racist? There's nothing remotely racist about it.

But yeah, it's come up about million times as far as I can see. I personally think she's mixed.

  • "After talking to Sakai, the idea for the hat was born. Sakai drew inspiration for much of Clementine’s design from his young daughter, who wears a similar cap."

Clem was based off Derek Sakai's daughter, so she was actually given asian features.

As far as I know. If there's any other influence, it would be asian. We did not "give her caucasian features to make her more palatable."

  • Spanish? Her parents are not even close to Spanish!

  • I hope you're back as Lead Animator for ep4. Something i loved from ep 1 and 2 were the great facial animations. I noticed the change of lead animator in ep3 and was disapointed at the lack of new facial animations.

  • Thank god one thing I do enjoy is when the Characters actually do hand gestures like in episode 2 When they discovered that Matthew was Walters friend and Nick is like "I have to tell him" and Luke extends his arms and is like "Are you f*cking nuts." I don't know if i'm explaining it correctly but I tried. lol

I confirmed she was African American.

As people have speculated, Derek Sakai (our art director) is Asian. He may have been looking at his daughter for inspiration. So, if Clementine has some Asian features, that is a possible reason. But neither of her parents are 100% asian (we've seen both of them), so at best, if we're retconning in some asian lineage, it would at most make her a quarter asian.

But to my knowledge, that has not ever been officially retconned in. Not sure why it matters so much. Clementine is Clementine.

It was one of those "I Heard..." Moments but yea its finally confirmed by bubbledncr that she is infact African American and Asian.

    That was sk54_wd200GMDefaultC_frustratedThrowHandsUp.

We typically do special gestures for moments that the writers call out that I know our general gestures don't cover. So you have the writers to thank as much as me, for writing in those gestures.

  • To me, it's pretty clear she's mixed race. Just look up a picture of an African (sub-Saharan, not Northern African/Middle Eastern) person. They are not light-skinned or amber-eyed. They are very dark as a means of protection from the sun. African Americans have on average 10% European blood from mixing in the U.S., so they're a bit lighter. She's just multiracial in my opinion. I don't really know beyond that. Probably part black, part white, part Asian. She's beautiful whatever she is. I like her racially ambiguous look, she's very unique looking. I don't get why people get offended about it either, but whatever. I just wanted to add my opinion before this thread gets shut down because people are overly-sensitive about Clementine's heritage for some-odd reason.

Well, most African Americans have European admixture (on average 10%). The majority are mixed. That's why most American blacks are so much lighter than full-blooded Africans. So, most Afro-Americans are mixed, they just don't claim it. There have been studies done on this. They've lived alongside European-descended people for so long that there's been significant mixture, like most places that are diverse in ethnicity/race. I'm a history major and I took an interest in anthropology and genetics. I find it fascinating. Clementine's race doesn't matter, but some people are curious. No big deal.

Actually, this source (take out spaces) claims that American blacks are 17-18% European on average. It's actually higher than I thought. So, African-Americans are pretty much all mixed. The source is listed at the bottom of the page. I just thought I'd give a source before someone asks for one. You can just Google it if you're interested. It is an interesting topic. The Americas, the Caribbean are all melting-pots.

  • Lol. Caucasian, as in Caucasoid. In anthropology, there are only 3 races: Caucasoid, Mongoloid, Negroid. Yeah, the names don't always seem to make sense, but for easier classification they've designated these 3.

I swear, she has nothing to do with the Caucasus mountains!

  • She's technically black... But I see a bit of Asian at certain camera angles or facial expressions.
  • I think she's a mix of African american and Asian judging from the picture we see of her parents. Her father is obviously black, but her mother is lighter skinned, has almond shaped eyes, but you can see the African american features in her hair and mouth/nose. She's my biracial walker slaying princess.:)
  • She's definitely at least part African-American. How else could she be mistaken for Lee's daughter?
  • ugh, gameinformer, they been pissing me off lately. They gave Titanfall AKA COD with mechs a higher rating then S2E2, fuck 'em.

  • I think your the first person on the forum who agrees with me on this. Everyone says she's African-American, Asian, or both, yet I see none of neither. She's definitely darker in S2 but it looks more like a tan to me, she was in the woods of Georgia for a year and a half.
