Do you believe that Nick is gay?

  • I hope you didn't think I meant that we have had enough LGBT characters, because I don't think we have. 11 characters in a series with hundreds of characters though is fairly "realistic" in the sense that LGBT people ARE a minority, but there does need to be more.

I mean if you look at the numbers I posted, it looks promising, but then you consider that only 3 of those 11 characters are still alive and are main characters. (Aaron, Paul Monroe in the comics, Tara in the show).

That is pitiful representation. In my reply to the poster above I was denying his claims that there were "too many" gay people in the comics recently.

  • I don't think you used the word "contorted" in the right context, here, but if you're trying to say it wouldn't make sense or wouldn't be fitting, I don't see why.

Just one conversation with him saying something like, "Shit, Clem, I'd never admit this to his face but I really do love that guy." Nothing blown out of proportion or turned into a big dramatic subplot. Just a few simple, optional lines you can share with him.

  • This is just perfect.

Wait, let me say this in another way, I would go gay for Nick.

  • That's a strawman claim though. You know precisely why it is important to the people in this thread. It's been explained. Now you're just being argumentative.

Yes, asexuals are underrepresented - but that's no excuse for criticising people for questioning if Nick is gay. If it was so unimportant why are you so invested in criticising people for speculating?

  • Well, i don't really ship Nuke that way. I want them to be bros.

AND BECAUSE I JUST LOVE NICK MORE THAN ANY OF YOU THINK.

If Nick hooks up with Luke, i'd be peanut butter and jelly.
  • That's a great point! I would love to have a canon asexual character. Personally, I headcanon Clementine as asexual.

But just so you know, asexuals can still have romantic feelings--this coming from someone who's personally asexual, but has romantic attractions.

Nick could very well have a crush on Luke and still be asexual. The evidence of him having romantic feelings has been hashed and rehashed already and I really don't want to repeat myself.

I have to agree with you on that, asexual people are pretty underrepresented.

And now I thought how funny it would be for Luke being an asexual(and aromantic), with two people potentially having crushes on him.

Pft. I now want that to happen.

  • That's a fair comment. :)

(Be warned, a bit of rant coming up here)

I personally would like to see Nick and Luke as a couple because I was kind of a little offended by the Walter/Matthew storyline. Not about the death part but about how much the writing bent over backwards to not just outright say they were gay. All the "Walter's friend" and the ambiguously framed photo and the blink-and-you'll-miss-it statement from Walter about Matthew being his partner. It all felt like TTG were trying their hardest to not make it obvious but make it obvious. It's the old "gay elephant" scenario that is often played out when a story doesn't want to explicitly show a gay couple. (Also the whole thing of never actually seeing Walter and Matthew in the same room together... sorry TTG, but in my book that doesn't get you a "how progressive" mark. It gets a "another story trying to say they are inclusive while avoiding uncomfortable gay stuff" mark.)

I love how TTG have been showing a lot of great diversity in TWD. And I loved the Walter/Matthew story in so much as the building tension etc. I just wish they hadn't been so painfully coy as if they were embarrassed to admit it was a gay couple. If they reveal that Nick is also gay/bi at least, then I personally wouldn't find the Walter/Matthew thing so annoying because then it does become "gay people are just people" instead of "here's another barely veiled gay couple." /rant

Sorry - I've been a bit grumpy about how gay characters are treated in gaming as of late. :)

  • I wouldn't think it's a sign of any hate towards homosexuals. After all, it's the walking dead, basically everyone dies in some sort of gory or disturbing way.

In a way I'm kind of hoping Telltale giving two gays, as well as a possible third, vicious deaths (Matt shot in neck, Nicks throat ripped out, Walter shot in head), isn't a signal of something.

  • Well for a number of reasons. Firstly - people fall in love all the time in the most tense of situations. It makes sense for people to build relationships. You don't just stop having feelings and attraction because it's an apocalypse.

Secondly, it makes the story more than just another dull zombie horror flick. Which is the thing - The Walking Dead franchise is so successful because it *is* about people being people during the apocalypse. The comics and television have people falling in love all the time. TTG would be fools to not include any love story in the game - it's not like anyone is asking for an episode where Clem has to follow characters around while they make lovey dovey noises at each other for 90 minutes. :D

  • I hated that too. It was good that Walter and Matthew were in the game at all, but the way they skirted around it really sucked.
Shortly after the episode, there were so many people on these forums claiming "Walter and Matthew aren't gay, they are too cool for that. they are both just really good friends".
It got to the point where Telltale had to explicitly say "yes, they are gay" on the forums.

Hopefully they will learn their lesson and not avoid the issue like they did. (maybe that explains the increased gushing from Nick?)

  • Lee and Carley had a thing going, no one complained about that being unrealistic. Bonnie and Leland were clearly into each other. Christa and Omid, Kenny and Katjaa, kenny and Sarita, and Rebecca and Alvin were all explicitly together, no one said that was unrealistic.

Having one character say "Hey I'm gay" isn't going to be the tipping point where it becomes unrealistic.
