I wouldn't think it's a sign of any hate towards homosexuals. After all, it's the walking dead, basically everyone dies in some sort of gory or disturbing way.

    1) I may be wrong, but weren't there two couches? Anyway, tons of straight people have slept in the same bed with someone of the same sex. And like the OP said, there's the floor and they take turns to sleep on it.
    2) Yes, he talks about Luke, I talk about my male friends too.
    3) They hugged once, and Nick's uncle just died. It seems like a reasonable thing to do it such a situation.
    4) And only closeted gay men do this? Really? Being called "gay" can be seen as an insult.
    5) It didn't interpret that as flirty. I think it was supposed to be joke.

But you are. You're asking what evidence is there, and saying it's unexplored and unimportant. You're not engaging in the discussion as presented but instead presenting your own argument and arguing that instead.

  • I'd expect a bit more civil until someone said "I can see how Nick is probably straight, but I got a gay vibe because of xyz." In my experience if someone is perceived as gay but defended as straight, the gay community is willing to discuss the pros and cons of each view fairly even handedly until we get the expected "NO WAY IS HE GAY" posts.

For what it's worth, I want Nick to be a gay character, I think there's more than enough ground work in the episodes to justify that reading of his character but my expectation is that TTG is just going to go with he's straight and just a childhood friend of Luke.

I'd love to be wrong and I will applaud TTG if they do take the gamble of having him be gay (with or without reciprocation from Luke) - but I will admit I'm not holding my breath.

But as for why the reaction on "is he gay?" threads is such as it is - I put that down to the invisibility of heterosexuality. It's the default view. You know why we don't have "Is Nick Straight?" threads? Because people just default to straight. They see a male character, they just assume he's straight. As I put it to a friend of mine, the problem with that view is that when two guys are shown together people just assume they're straight until someone puts his peepee where a bro wont go. But show a guy and a girl together and people tend to assume they are romantically interested in each other.

Actually having played both the "go with Pete" and "go with Nick" - Luke and Nick hug in both versions. In the go with Nick version they don't find Pete and Luke hugs Nick because they found Nick. And it is a lingering kind of "I don't think bros hug that way" kind of hug.

I don't know about the bed one - I personally don't take that as evidence. We don't really know where everyone sleeps in that house. So I'm with you on that - they could use the couches.

As for Luke and Nick talk about each other - it's what they say. Luke is constantly concerned for Nick's well-being. Nick talks in a way that is either hero worship or could be construed as attraction. It's more than how people just talk about their friends.

The whole thing about the Kenny comment is twofold - firstly, Kenny has been living for some time with a gay couple. So it implies that he's seeing something between Luke and Nick. And yes, as a gay guy I can tell you that closeted guys do get very defensive when they're called out. A guy in the closet spends a LOT of time working on being as un-gay as possible and they are pretty much worried 24/7 that someone will see through the veneer. That's why coming out is such a big event. It's a huge relief. So Nick's response does not come across as "I'm not gay" but more as "does he know something?"

As for the tuck me in comment, as I said before - the delivery is definitely flirty and not jokey. Whether that was the intent or not I can't say. But I wouldn't expect a heterosexual audience to pick up on it - because as I've said elsewhere Heterosexuality is kind of invisible. People just assume the heterosexual reading regardless. Which is why when writing gay characters it is important to not be too subtle. They don't need to scream "I'm gay!" but they can't be veiled either because heterosexual audiences just don't tend to pick up on the cues unless they have had a lot of exposure to the LGBT community via friends or gay media.

  • Absolutely. Heterosexuality is still viewed as the default.

This is why Walter and Matthew are poor representation. We were introduced to them as a couple, we know they're gay from the start. And then they died without having any bearing on the plot. Everyone is assuming that Nick is heterosexual and they've BEEN assuming that for the past three episodes. Proving them wrong, proving that "straight isn't the default", proving that your favorite characters can be gay, THAT would be a monumental move in gaming.

  • It depends what you define as underrepresented to be honest.

I mean, what percent of the population identifies as asexual? I read somewhere that it's roughly 0.5 percent, meaning 1 in every 200 characters. Now, lots of characters' sexualities are never stated too.

They are slightly underrepresented, yeah, but it's nowhere near as problematic as the underrepresentation of female in the game industry (twice as many male characters as female characters in the walking dead, as well as more male zombies than female ones) or the film industry (where 17% of characters are female), in a world where females hold a slight majority.

I also played both. Hugging a friend because his uncle died is a normal reaction, whether you do it when you find the friend or when you find the corpse doesn't matter.
Nick doesn't "hero worship" Luke in episode 2. He actually says that he didn't even want to do business with him at first, but that they got drunk and he finally accepted. In episode 3, he hopes that Luke will save them and agrees with him that leaving is risky.
Whatever. I can tell you just the opposite, I know plenty of straight people that don't like to be called gay. I wouldn't trust Kenny on this. He's from Florida and crazy shit comes out of his mouth.
