How did the apocalypse start?

edited May 2014 in The Walking Dead
I've always had one question. How did the apocalypse start? What could have started to make people become walkers? I don't really understand.

Comments

  • Its never been explained and I don't think it ever will
  • It just happened don't try to understand it lol it's just supposed to be the end of times I guess
  • Premarital sex
  • Ben and Travis.
  • kenny's stache, the power buildup was too much it had to release some.
  • This is the best response of them all.
    The rest of you suck

Someone here once said it was Ben's Science Project.

    Makes sense.

Probably a vírus that can take control of the brain. It would not really mather if the person is dead or not... If the person has the brain then that's enought for the vírus I guess.
  • I think Nick or Ben did something stupid.
  • Dolphins created the virus. Only thing that makes sense.
  • Love this.

Ben's Dad work for (CEDA) Civil Emergency and defence agency and screwed everything up
  • Problably a mutation and a miscommunication from the splitting of the cells.Or it could've been some undercover secret project the government had that went wrong when they tried to find a vacinee for something, that would be cool.
  • An advanced form of herpes a.k.a Zombie Herpes.
  • Did you want a serious answer? How did the apocalypse start

Stage one: everyone got infected by a new illness that displayed no noticeable symptoms so it wasn't picked up (took weeks, months, maybe years)
Stage two: the illness evolved in exactly the same way in every person at around the same time (couple of days)
Stage three: zombie apocalypse (where we are now)

How could this happen? First identify the culprit.

From stage one we can see that the illness can't be a virus as a virus destroys the host cells to exist. symptoms even minor ones would appear and the characters definitely don't seem sick in any way while alive.
Due to modern medicine being commonly used in America, it is also unlikely to be a fungus or bacteria, unless they were super resistant to things like penicillin. Fungus also has a slow mutation rate and bacteria mutates too randomly for stage two to occur.
That leaves parasites and prions as likely culprits as both can infect without causing any noticeable symptoms, are resistant to most modern medicine (most parasites integrate with the host and gain their resistance to it, and prions are currently considered uncureable), and have consistent mutations
A prion is the more likely culprit as they do not need food to survive (zombies not needing to eat for long periods to stay alive) are very resistant to decay (zombies taking forever to rot), can lie dormant and then become active due to stimulation ( like the electrical signals of the brain suddenly turning off, dying) they must have a very high rate of reaction to make a dead body turn so quickly though. Also prions rarely mutate but the same prion will mutate in the same way even if it's in a completely different person, so it changing from no symptoms and harmless to walking dead in every person at around the same time without being in contact with each other is not impossible (though unlikely)

In summary it is most likely caused by a prion, which is the same thing responsible for mad cows

  • It was Travis' fault.

Even though his dad was Special Forces, he didn't know what he was doing.
  • It's never been explained (in the comic anyway) and should never be explained.

Mystery makes for a better story. The answers to these sorts of things are always contrived.
  • Clem's hat...duh
  • I don't know, but I bet it's Ben's fault.
  • Damn it Ben!

  • New kind of organism that takes over the brain after the person's death appears and infects everyone on earth thanks to globalisation. It was probably set free/mutated a couple days before the whole apocalypse started and turned couple hundred thousends of recently died people into zombies who turned some million people into zombies and that's when shit went down.
  • XD it wanted to protect clementine so bad!

  • Never thought I'd use my biomed education to try and create a theory of how the zombie apocalypse began :D . but don't take my word for it completely. I'm not training to be a doctor after all. This is definably an educated guess though
