Why do people like Nate so much?

edited May 2014 in The Walking Dead
I don't understand why people (mostly on tumblr and youtube) keep asking for Nate's return? I don't even want him near the girls (mainly Clem and Sarah). His character was absolutely disgusting, degrading women, killing a defenseless old couple, the way he talks to Russell. Heck, every time I played 400 days, Russell's sequent was the least of my favorite because of him and I actually kinda liked Russell's character compared to Wyatt and Shel.

I don't understand.

  • yea i don't want him near the girls too but he funny as hell
  • I didn't like his character, but he did make a very good antagonist. Perhaps that's why people would like him to return
  • I think because he has a sense of humor you would never find in any other walking dead character
  • Cause twisted characters are awesome!

I don't think anyone sees Nate as someone to aspire to be; his volatile personality just makes for interesting characterization.
  • I ship Jane and Nate.

Or I ship them and Jane ends up mortally wounding Nate by shooting him in his bowl of jelly.
  • I guess he reminds me of myself. Take that for what its worth.
  • What would you give me? Strong six?

  • It's because he's a good antagonist. Nobody likes Nate in the way that they would like a friend, but he was the most interesting - and terrifying - character of 400 Days. He was unpredictable, in a way that every time you though that you had him figured out, he'd do the exact opposite of what you would think and keep you guessing.
  • well personality counts for at least a strong six.

Because he was crazy and amoral and unpredictable in an entertaining way.

Basically, the same reason people like the Joker.
  • Easy, they don't like Nate (I wouldn't him in my party, I don't think I'd want to have lunch with him); but they (and I) think Nate are an interetsing and entertaining character and provide interest and fun to the game. We don't like Nate, we like that Nate exist in the game.
  • what is so bad about him?

He could easily be a creep. Didn't he made a dirty innuendo to Russell to do him some "deeds". It was disgusting.

  • Because he is a complete antihero and many people prefer that. You can get a standard hero in nearly every movie, where some beta male does something heroic and then gets the bitches, but there are nearly no movies with irredeemable antiheroes .
  • what? Be straight with me lol.

I think he just talking men talk, guys are pigs.

  • He's chilly to hang around with, will protect you when necessary and try to get revenge when people try to hurt you.

  • Nate was more entertaining in a 15 minutes than this new group is through 3 episodes.

I think it's for the humor side of him, but also he sort of reminds me a little of Jack Nicholson who he can be crazy sometimes in his film roles. Nate could be one of those villains you'd love to hate. The way he delivers lines aren't always dead cold serious, and he makes light of everything even if what he's doing is completely fucked up.

Even so, the guy scares the shit out of me and I know he would be dangerous if things turned out for the bad [and not in a million years would I trust him around any female]. Still, I want to see this guy make a return in Season 2 just so Clem or somebody else can off that big bad wolf for good.
  • Me too, i felt it was justified in the zombie Apocalypse. I got the DayZ mindset. If you shoot at me, one of us is going to die.

  • Sort of a good question; the big this is killing the old people at the diner. It's ambiguous how much they actually recognized him or if they were senile;

Then again, he's (more than) slightly dismissive of women and, (arguably) racist (granted I personally have argued that he is less a real racist than simply a ball-buster, even if that includes racist jokes - then again you can argue that in itself is racist).

  • I not afraid to admit it, I have have talked about a woman's cleavage to another guy! So go ahead toss the first stone.

  • He's loud, obnoxious, hilarious, dangerous, loyal, and completely deranged. So far, there hasn't been another character even remotely like him in the game. What's not to love?
  • i was just speaking for myself, sorry ^_^

  • Here is how i look at it. The old people shot at us first, in my rule book for ZA engagements, is to do what needs done to survive. The old people were hostile and were Dealt with DayZ style. Their loot was taken and they were forced to respawn.

I make jokes to my friends about all sorts of things that i am sure someone would find some reason to justify it as inappropriate. We aren't cut from the same cord. Kenny does bad things too, but people love him!

  • I like Nate mainly because of his humour and just the way he is really, he's a unique character with depth and he stands out from many others, plus his voice actor sounds great too. Sure he can come across as a scary, gorked, perverted, cold blooded psychopath, but his character and humour that goes with it just makes him a great character.
  • Nate is gonna get your precious little Clementine!

I agree about the humor - I'm open to very politically incorrect jokes.

The real question about the diner isn't who shot first then - but whether the couple actually recognized Nate (IE, did they have an experience with him before and know he was an aggressive person.

Basically, who started it? I mean before Russell came in (which is before the player can see). I don't think that's clear either way.

Then again, you can say 'what's so bad about murdering an old couple for their supplies in the apocalypse.' And I understand the pragmatism behind that...

  • If i remember correctly, it has been a while, the old guy started rambling about guys with masks. So it couldn't of been Nate because he was alone.

  • The old couple did not hold them at gunpoint to the point that Nate had no other choice to kill them. He kill them not because of his own survival, but the fact that he was an ass. He and Russ could have easily flee the location but they didn't. Not to mention, he was the culprit behind Wyatt/Eddie's attack.

  • I like Nate, he is a badass, he has style, he seems like the kind of person that you can trust and the proof is he didn't kill Russell if he tries to shoot him, yeah he is a lil bit crazy but he is awesome.
  • XD oh come on, there's no harm in talking about a woman's cleavage, like there's no harm in talking about a guy's butt. Just don't go hurting anybody or shooting old couples and no stones will be dumped on your head.

  • The old couple got what was coming to them, they shot first Its not like we can just take the truck into a Midas and have its tires replaced. Eddie killed Nate's friend because Eddie was high. I'd be pissed if someone killed one of my friends too.

As a person, I don't like Nate. He's slimy, misogynistic garbage, and toyed around with Russell in a fashion similar to a cat with a mouse. ex. saying he's going to cover Russell but then leaving him open, willfully putting him in danger, and purposefully saying things to make him feel uncomfortable. "You gonna work for it? A man's got needs, you know." and "Wanna sit on my lap?" You don't say stuff like that to strangers.

But, with that said, I like Nate as a character. What's a good story without a good villain? Nate makes for an amazingly entertaining antagonist. He's a complete wildcard. I would be interested in seeing what role he plays and how he would interact with the S2 characters. Though I would never trust him with Clementine or anyone else in the group.

I don't know if anybody else noticed this, but Nate's quote "So, should just we kill these folks and take all their stuff?" is a throwback to Russell's story about his old group leader, Steve. Russell quotes him by saying "We gonna kill these folks and take all their stuff or what?" Nate was intentionally trying to perturb Russell.
  • It sure would be, she would find him so rude but I'm sure a sassy Clem would probably find him to be funny.
