Something that bothered me.

Kenny at the end of In Harm's Way.

The scene of him shooting Carver in the knees to cripple him is undoubtedly awesome. But it makes no sense.

Kenny has just had one of his optical nerves crushed, and potentially has brain damage. He no longer has good depth perception either. Even if he can see, his vision would probably be impaired or blurry.

So how the fuck did he shoot both of carvers kneecaps out in a single shot each without aiming?
It makes no sense, and seemed to only have been added to make Kenny look like even more of a badass.

Anyone here with actual medical knowledge who could probably give us some insight?

How can Big Boss aim with only one eye in most MGS games?
  • He got lucky. Real lucky
  • Kenny lost his left eye so maybe it wasn't his dominant eye and it's his right eye and that's the one you use to shoot which ever eye is the most dominant.

I am studying medicine and i think i found a solution...he got lucky, real lucky! (Dat profile picture of yours...Lick/Nuke confirmed for Season2!)
  • I'm not saying he can't aim because he only has one working eye, I mean that Kenny literally lost the use of his eye due to blunt force trauma earlier that same day. It's not like he had long to recover.

  • Hi Mustache.

  • You know how people close one eye when they're aiming? Well, Kenny's always aiming now.
  • Well after 3 years of just killing I think he would be pretty skilled. He is also a very cold guy.
  • Kneecaps so Carver wouldn't get away and then he'd beat him to death with a crowbar for all the terrible things he's done.
  • As someone who study's biomed (keep in mind, still studying) If you lose one of your eyes, you will only lose about 30% of your vision but you will lose almost all of your depth perception. Considering Kenny's body has a physical memory of how to shoot, after living in a zombie apocalypse for so long, and considering how close carver was it's not completely Impossible for Kenny to hit that accurately. If carver had been farther away however there is almost no chance Kenny could have hit him, let alone accurately. (This is assuming the damage from blunt force trauma is minimal at worst)
  • Well no need to be rude....smh

  • That sounds pretty reasonable.
Still, the damage looked pretty severe. Carlos was making it out like Kenny might have permanent brain damage due to the severity of the injuries. (then again, this is the doctor who couldn't tell the difference between the bite of a dog and a human)
Even if it didn't affect his brain, I'd imagine all that trauma would leave Kenny reeling and unable to see straight for at least a while, it just seems weird to me. They could have had any other character shoot Carver. Perhaps even Rebecca, she had more than enough reason.

  • Let's look at your quote.
"Kenny has just had one of his optical nerves crushed, and potentially has brain damage. He no longer has good depth perception either. Even if he can see, his vision would probably be impaired or blurry."

Kenny had his orbital crushed. Not his optic nerve. Your orbital is the bone around your eye, so it's reasonable that it would affect his eye.

He doesn't seem to have brain damage, as when he woke up he was able to walk and talk.

Losing an eye does not necessarily mean a complete loss of depth perception. in fact, many people who lost eyes have lost very little of their depth perception in the process.

"Even if he can see, his vision would probably be impaired or blurry."
Well, not exactly. you see, his left eye was the affected one. it's likely his right eye was his dominant eye, and it should be unimpaired.

It's actually quite probable he could shoot carver in the knees with only his right eye, as he killed Johnny and shot Carver in the shoulder by aiming down the sight of his rifle with only his right eye only.
  • Oh! whoops my bad.

Thanks for the insightful answer. Guess it's not too unreasonable after all.

  • not terribly. and of course, it is all to be taken with a grain of salt, as this is just a video game.

  • Come to think of it, where did Kenny even get that gun? Am I forgetting something?

  • Carver was standing like 2 feet away. Even without depth perception, it wouldn't be too hard...
