Question about the comics TWD

edited May 2014 in The Walking Dead
So I recently FINALLY came across a bookstore that caries the comics and have a question about comic terms seeing as this is the first comic I have bought.

So I saw issues 1,2, then I couldn't find any others till I got to 6 then 8 then from there they jumped around till I got to 20. Instead of buying the issues I bought a compendium. Unfortunately they didn't have the 1st one so I bought the second.

So the question is this, I'm assuming a compendium is a bunch of issues put together (correct me if im wrong) So in comic terms what have they got? Is it just issues and compendiums or are there other terms I should know of? Again first comic I ever bought so Im really new on my terms.

Another question what exactly is a compendium? Besides a really heavy ass comic lol.

  • I'm not really sure what you're asking, but a collection of issues within a comic is called a volume. So, the first volume of TWD is called "Days Gone Bye", and it includes issues 1-6.
According to the dictionary, a compendium is "a collection of concise but detailed information about a particular subject, especially in a book or other publication".
  • You can buy single issues, whole volumes or compendiums.

Compendiums are the cheapest way to catch up with everything in the comics but only makes it up to issue 100 or something like that.
  • just go on youtube and read them lol. you don't have to pay anything.

Alright, let's see. A Compendium contains 48 Issues. A Volume contains 6 Issues. If you are just getting in to the comics I would recommend getting the two Compendiums to start you off. Do not read the second one before the first one. I'd also recommend buying the remaining issues in Volume form rather than Issue form. The comics currently have 21 released Volumes. The first issue of Volume 22 is also out. There are also Books, that include 2 Volumes, and Omnibuses that include 4 Volumes, but I've never actually seen those in a store, and I'm not sure if they're the same size as the Compendiums and Volumes. Hope that helps. You have some awesome comics ahead! Be aware that the artist changes after the first Volume. (Extra note: There are also a few special issues that focus on the backstories of specific characters, and then a few novels that I have not read.)
  • Oh ok. Ya some people like the real thing.

  • Yeah I've waited like 5 years to buy the comics. I didn't want to buy or read them online for personal preferences

Oh ok. Ya some people like the real thing.

  • Ok Thank You! I had already heard of a few spoilers like what the governor did to Rick and since they didn't have Compendium 1 I said screw it I've waited long enough for these and bought the second. It starts off almost exactly like the midseason premier of the 4th season of the show. I do plan on going back and getting the 1st but I still got a few compendiums ahead of me and I think buying them like this is the way to go based off your decision and what I have already bought.

I also cant wait till I get to see this Negan character everybody goes on about. but I wish I got to see comic governor. In time, In time.

  • You're going to miss out on a lot of important character development if you don't read the first Compendium before the second one. The characters in the comics are quite different from the TV series.

  • I've already started, I couldn't help myself. I do feel like I have missed a lot of character development in Rick and Carl. But I already like Carl a lot better than Korl, and that's saying something since Korl is one of my favorite character since season 3.

I can finally be one of those people that say "the comics are better than the show" lol

  • the compendiums are massive collections that have nine volumes in them (there are about 6-7 issues per volume) which you can get cheap online I got the first compendium for $35 and the second for $40 at the moment there are only 2 compendiums so once you finish compendium 2 you will have to start buying volumes
  • Its 48 issues, not 48 volumes. The book would be ten times as big lol

  • The character that is the most different from their TV incarnation is Andrea no doubt. Comic Andrea is awesome.

  • See I honestly believed TV Andrea (though a bit of a slutbag) was awesome. But Comic Andrea is a genuine badass. I see why people complain so much about her TV counterpart but they forget that Carol more or less took her place. It's so cool how many characters almost have the same looks. Especially Abraham Fords crew. And of course Andrea, Michonne, and Dale.

  • My dad bought both compendiums for me from some French store. They're basically big ass books - number one is issues 1 - 48 and two is 49 - 96.
  • I read them all on YouTube, I'm currently caught up with Issue 127.
  • I guess. I don't care for him.
