Video Game and Movie Soundtracks

edited June 2014 in General Chat
Most video games you've played and will play will have a soundtrack, whether it's lurking in the background or blasting out and sweeping you away in the action.

The question is, which do you like most?

From orchestral Elder Scrolls to chiptune Fez, award winning L.A. Noire and Bioshock: Infinite to other-wordly Mass Effect, and not forgetting atmospheric scores for TellTale's games, there are many, many outstanding soundtracks.

So, which one takes your fancy?

Also, if you like video game soundtracks, you might like some movie ones too. Quite a few composers for video games have also done movies, and vice versa, so feel free to share those or any others!

  • Deus Ex, FF7, Persona games, Half-Life, and yeah Mass Effect is nice too.
  • The Deus Ex one suits that game perfectly, and the Deus Ex Universe thing that's been announced sounds intriguing.

  • Dragon Quest Soundtracks. Go and listen to DQ8 Overture on Youtube. Just superb. Notably Hotel Dusk (NDS). It kinda brought me into liking Smooth Jazz, and such. Kingdom Hearts has some nice Tracks too.

Does GTA SA counts too? It mainly are Songs from known Artists but hey i loved to ride through the Countryside with a Motorcycle and K-Rose on. xD
  • K-Rose? What about K-DST? Gotta listen to some Rod Stewart and The Who on there. ;S

  • That overture is wonderfully grand, yet not too much if you know what I mean. I really enjoyed Hotel Dusk, and listening to the tracks on the jukebox. Fallout 3 really brought me into jazz, with Galaxy News Radio.

    Yeah they count! XD

  • Borderlands 2, Dead Rising and Dishonored for me, along with others that I can't quite name.

I personally liked how Dead Rising 3 had 80's-like themes that played in the background during cutscenes.

Dishonored had a sweet ost too, specifically, the cover of the 'Drunken Sailor' song. Epicness.
  • Dunno. K-Rose was great in those Areas around Mount Chilaid ^^

  • Playing Borderlands 2 now and the soundtrack is sweet, especially in huge battles and boss fights. One of the composers for that soundtrack also did the first game, as well as all of the first three and part of the fourth console Assassin's Creed games, so I'm a fan of his work.

That Drunken Sailor/Whaler is particularly haunting, though the whole game is in a way. Especially if you go for a Chaos ending. Looking forward to the sequel.

  • Mayyybe, listen to some K-DST and you might change your mind. ;) Besides, that mountain was epic to do some stunt jumps off of, since it had the ramp up there!

  • Not to mention the Bigfoot Myth. Hah Good Times.

  • Gosh, the many, many people that Rockstar tricked, only to find out that the myth was undoubtedly a fake.

Are they going to make a sequel for Dishonored? That game can't be abandoned like that.

  • TWAU is a fantastic soundtrack. Any particular MGS title or all of them?

  • Assassin's Creed 2, particularly Tracks 1,2 and 3. One word: EPIC!

  • Didn't know it was an MMO-type. All I've heard is that they're making storylines which inter-connect and so forth, spread across different media, i.e. games, comics, novels.

The MMO-type deal? I haven't heard much about it.

  • And second to them is the AC4 soundtracks. Legendary ship music b'tches!

You are playing as a robed figure, with a large mountain as your destination. You play with (an) anonymous player(s), who will help/accompany you on your journey. The game's story is told wordlessly, with minimal graphics and lovely soundtracks. The game takes 2-3 hours to complete. PS3-exclusive.

I think that's everything you need to know for now.

  • Certainly sounds different to the usual sort of video games, and you're description of it has piqued my curiosity.
I don't suppose you've played Child of Light?

  • Hehe, glad that it has piqued your curiosity.

I haven't, but I have heard of it from my friend and various people. I'll probably do so if I had the time (*cough* life).

  • If you ever get the chance it's a fairly unique game.

    It's a shame I don't have a PS3 to play Journey on :(

  • I've heard rumours that there will be a separate release for 360 and PS3. AC: Comet is a title I've heard mentioned.

  • What I meant was, I don't want to see a game that has nothing to do with characters from other previous games.

  • Ah, I see. Other than rumours I haven't heard anything definite on it, so I suppose it's a wait and see.

Oh, I love this track; so enchanting.

I find Vergen by Night to be similarly calm.

  • Also a good one.

The first games soundtrack was great too. This track right here added so much to the atmosphere of the locale.

  • I never played the first game (the second I played when it released on 360), however that track by itself really conveys a certain brooding and darkness. Here's hoping they can capture the essence of these tracks with the third game.
