What if not choosing fast enough results in worse things happening?

Like, for example, what if Telltale gives us a decision soon where we have to save the life of one character and let the other die (Basically a Carley/Doug situation) but what if you don't decide fast enough, they both die and the game still goes on? I think something like that should happen, it'll make things more tense.

Also, I hate that some players pause the game just to give themselves more time when making a decision, I don't know how, but I think that needs to be fixed or something. Like, the game should be able to be paused during hubs, or areas without a time limit, but when it comes down to quick decision making, the pause button shouldn't work and not choosing fast enough will result in a worse event happening and the game goes on.

I don't know, that's possibly a horrible idea, but I just hate when players cheat to get extra time by pausing, plus pausing the game ruins the tension. I bring this up because when deciding whether to cut off Sarita's arm or to kill the walker, if you don't choose fast enough, she should be killed at that moment and the game goes on. Instead, Telltale made it so you are forced to choose one or Clem gets eaten from behind.

Am I alone on this? Thoughts?

Perhaps like an option such as; "Hardcore Telltaler" should be made for such a style of game before you start it though. But I agree, I do like the idea.
  • You're right
  • I agree that pausing the game kills a lot of the tension, but I don't think removing the ability to will do much. Just... what's the point? When people fuck things up they'll just rewind.

As a bit of a tangent: it's funny. So many people make a big deal out of "following through" on their original choices, yet a lot of the people who get self-righteous about it also pause the game and sit there for ages while they decide what to do when certain decisions arise. They still give other people shit for not playing the game "the right way," though.

At any rate, I agree that failure should be an option. I'd be nice to be able to fuck up and have the game recognize it as a valid outcome.

  • i wouldnt hate the idea of a "no looking back" mode where you only have a single life, and if you get killed you start over. but honestly i think the idea of something like this is counter-intuitive to the story mechanic.

  • Great point's but those who pause the game so they can have more time to decide are really just cheating themselves of the true expirence.
Same as those who rewind to replay a scene to change a decision. The only person they are cheating is themselves.

You mentioned the Carley/Doug scene, when I played it, I tried to choose Carley but I got no icon over her to click, I missed noticing it was on her purse, so I ended up saving Doug. I just took it like in the moment of panic I couldnt get to Carley first so I saved Doug.

Same Idea if we're given a choice and the timer expires. It's like being scared or confused in the moment and don't react. It's reasonable.
I understand your idea about eliminating the pause function during certain scenes, but the only reason I have to disagree with it is because it's not the fault of the game, it's other players doing it. I just don't think it sould matter to anyone else what others do.

I love watching youtube and Twitch playthroughs and roll my eyes or quit watching those who pause or rewind. But in the end, they've just cheated themselves of the true expirence.

  • I had the same problem with Carley/Doug situation. I didn't realize I had to select her purse, and since it was a panic moment, I had to choose Doug. Luckily, my entire first playthrough was deleted by accident, so I had to replay it and make good decisions. That's the only time I ever had to go back though.

  • On the flipside more options of doing something fast is the worst outcome.

I have an idea where its foggy and walkers are attacking and your shooting them, then a figure bursts out at you and you have the option to shoot but its just Sarah panicking and if you fire you shoot and kill her. I've thought about this since Becca in 400 days and her pretending to be a zombie
