I laugh everytime I see someone say season one is true to comic. The only episode that followed the comic was the first one and the second one borrowed one element from it. The rest of the very short season went on its own tangent. The show, since season 3 on, has been following the comic more than it ever has been. Frank Darabont created the show and Im grateful to him for that, but IMO, its only gotten better since he left.
The problem with the show is that they fired Frank Darabont over nothing and basically stole the show from him.
He's the one that made se… moreason 1 so good and true to the universe of the comic. Then they kept changing writers after that and the show became somewhat inconsistent in it's overall quality.
Might I add that Frank Darabont directed the Shawshank Redemption...a masterpiece in my opinion.
They ruined good characters, killed Dale because the actor was friend with Darabont and made the second season a boring mess that dragged on too long.
So yeah, the game is overall better for its excellent writing and griping story. Hopefully they won't do the same mistakes the show did...
Huh. 6/10 is a bit generous for the comic. Bland and horrible writing there.
Haven't seen season four because I lost faith in the show du… morering its third season, but the first two seasons are great.
The game is virtually eclipsed over the other mediums.
Please lets not compare the TV show to anything. We all know AMC screwed over the series because of budget. The only legit season seemed like the first season which was still limited. I lost interest in the TV show when bad actors just stood there letting the walkers bite them sans resistance.
You all may not think TWD comic is on par to TWD game but in terms of graphic Novels it's the best "Non-Marvel/Non-DC rehash or sell-out" (or at least in top 10 indie comics).
Personally though I feel like Kirkman has grown tired of zombies from writing about them for so long (ie: Marvel zombies, TWD) and it really shows in his work. The last good saga for me at least in the comic Was the Governor arc or no way out(herd attacking alexandria Arc).
If you have read Invincible Kirkman's other comic up till the current issue of Invincible Im sure you will agree that the Invincible story line is fucking stellar right now and topples TWD comic story thrice over.
When you think about it though in terms of american comics, how many comic series do you really read compared to how many video games you would play.
But really think about would you read comics rather than play a well done game? My point is its hard to compare a comic to a game. Their different types of media. Best to check one of them out when you have nothing better to do rather then hate on the others.

Are you kidding me?
I recently started reading the comics because I kept hearing so much about how much better they are than the show. I … moredon't think I've ever been so dissapointed in my life.
While I agree that it's probably better than TV show seasons 3 + 4, but that's only because the last two seasons of the show has been some of the worst TV I've watched. The writing in the comics is just horrible. The dialogue is atrocious, I can't believe anybody in their right mind would call that good writing. The pacing sucks as well. It seems extremely rushed and the characters are really bland. I seriously can't describe any of the characters in the comic, they're that one-dimensional.
Yeah, the show had some really sucky parts (Lori+Andrea) but the writing in the first two seasons were better than the comics. Shane is a good example. I was horrified by Kirkman's bad handling of Shane's character. So unrealistic.
Season 2 of the show had hor… [view original content]
I'm going to have to disagree with you here. I'd say that the comics are pretty even with the TV Show, and neither of them come anywhere close to Telltale's.
The TV Show Rick I think is a better character, his ups and downs are more gradual, as opposed to in the comics it's always a singular event that instantly changes him from hero to anti-hero. I'll admit that his insanity arc in Season 3 wasn't as good as in the comics, but I do think that aside form the toned down violence, The Governor is way better than the Governor from the comics. Governor from the comics was just a psycho, and sure, he was scary, but he had no complexity to his character, at least not compared to his TV counterpart. The TV version of the Governor was very conflicted about his actions, and in Season 4 there was a point where I felt sorry for him. Comic Governor was scary, but had little depth.
I will say that I think the comics opened up to the series better, and they definitely handled the farm and such better, mainly by not dragging it out, but Season 2 of the show did have some redeeming values. Shane, for example, was a much better villain. The romance between Maggie and Glenn is done better, not much better as to how it starts, but a little better at least. Hershel is an amazing character, didn't care for him much in the comics. And as much as some people might not like it, Daryl did have a good progression in Season 2.
The show was brought down a bit still in Season 3, and Season 2 was my least favorite, and at that point, I'd easily be able to say that the comics were better.
Then Season 4 came around and, you know, did every single storyline from the comics better. so I'm willing to put them equally.
As for the comics and TV compared to the game, no comparison in my mind. The game is clearly the best, and really all you've said is, "the comics have better writing" without giving examples. How about this, The St. Johns and The Stranger are infinitely more complex, and ultimately better villains than The Governor, The Hunters, Shane, or any other "early" villains. The protagonist is better, and the relationship between Lee and Clem is infinitely better than the relationship between Rick and Carl. In fact, basically all of the characters are better than those of the comics. Lee has a dark past, he's smart, and he solves problems. Rick is a police officer, and I'm not at all saying that he's a bad character in anyway but... His progression just isn't as interesting as Lee's, and doesn't begin to compares to Clem's.
The game is also more emotional, and don't even try to argue otherwise.
I agree the game is better than the show, but NO ONE can outmaster Robert Kirkman, and it's a different sort of media so it's not fair to compare them.
Story and writing wise, the comics are unbeatable.
Classic example is one of the first walker kills in season 1. Andrea's sister holding the door open. She pretty much just holds out her arm not even trying to kick or push away from the walker letting it chow down on her arm like corn on the cob.
Lee didn't sacrifice anything, he died from infection. A sacrifice would be if he let himself get bit instead of someone else.
Even though I agree that the game is probably the best, the entire game paragraph in that image is so OTT and biased that I can't be bothered to actually debate what you're saying.
Im pretty sure she was in shock from some creature out of nowhere biting into her flesh. Anyone would be. She wasnt standing there with a blank look on her face, she was screaming in terror. Ive never seen a zombie movie where people immediately started hiting and kicking and soon as their bitten.
Classic example is one of the first walker kills in season 1. Andrea's sister holding the door open. She pretty much just holds out her arm not even trying to kick or push away from the walker letting it chow down on her arm like corn on the cob.
I agree with you that Shane is way better developed in the show, eventhough I grew to hate him for being a betrayer. Completely disagree with you about seasons 3 and 4 as I think they have been the best so far. Funny how people see things so differently, huh?
No, I'm not "just" a Shane fan. Yes, I found his character to the most interesting in season 2 and they handled it way better in the show th… morean Kirkman did in the comics. But I'm not a fanboy, I'm glad he died when he did in the show, it was the best thing for his character.
I'm simply using Shane as an example of one the parts the show did better than the comics.
And I'm not calling the comics "shit", I'm saying the writing is pretty bland.
You know you're sounding like you read without any expression just because you don't hear their voices, they have god damn facial expressions and your telling me they're stating things like robots and that you don't feel anything? Plus you can't judge a writer bad if you've seen one comic series of his
Sorry, no. I don't see how this is fantastic writing at all.
I think you might be confusing Kirkman's ideas and creativity with the quali… morety of his writing. These are two very different things. I've always said that Kirkman has some great ideas and his take on the ZA is probably my favorite of all time. But my gripe is with the WRITING, not the ideas or the world he's made.
The examples you just provided are pretty much the same way. It's just characters stating things like robots. I understand the reasoning behind what they say, but I don't FEEL anything when reading it. It just doesn't feel like REAL people talking.
Also, your examples are painfully cheesy as well... another gripe I have with the dialogue.
They got a new Show Runner for Seasons 4 and 5, Scott M. Gimple. The show is actually pretty great now, and as of Season 4, has done every storyline better than the comics.
Huh. 6/10 is a bit generous for the comic. Bland and horrible writing there.
Haven't seen season four because I lost faith in the show du… morering its third season, but the first two seasons are great.
The game is virtually eclipsed over the other mediums.
I will give you that, but here's the thing, there are a lot of people who won't read the novels that read the comics.
So while the novels did expand on his character, gave him the back story he needed, in the comics, he's still not as good a character, whereas the Governor in the TV Series was a good character just within the main series.
But yeah, including the novels, Comic Governor is a marginally better character. Honestly, they're both good.
Ah, I see that you're confusing your own opinion with facts. Not just facts, but irrefutable facts. Do you know to definition of either of those words? Because so far you haven't presented any facts.
Nah, it's not that spoilerish, it's only speeches and everyone know that Carl was shot in the face and survived it. I didn't post what happens after Negan saying "yes... yes I am", you know what happens.
Nah, it's not that spoilerish, it's only speeches and everyone know that Carl was shot in the face and survived it. I didn't post what happens after Negan saying "yes... yes I am", you know what happens.
I have to admit that his swearing is one of the things I hate most about him. It's just annoying. I've got no problem with swearing itself, but Negan is what would happen if every swear word in the English language decided to wear someone's skin and masquerade as a human being.
The TV show by the amc has suffered a lot of reducing quality and fired crew members like Frank Derabont (Which was the best producer imo) the colossal fuck up that is season 2 was really awkward to me, all the budget cuts which have caused awkward lighting and shadow effects and plot holes or entire episodes made of dialogues and conflicts that don't even relate to the plot.
Rick in the comics has had the same if not more conflicts as in the TV show, establishing rules like "you kill, you die" and then realising that's not that easy, and of course the fact he always thought that being on the run with fewer people was better, but then in his speech to Carl that I posted above he starts to change and have the most amazing conclusions about handling the new world.
You also forgot about how EVERYONE were so pissed when he didn't kill Negan, yet he proved to everyone they can still regain their humanity.
So many more examples of him changing in the comics are present but I'm too lazy to bring more.
Now about season 4, it was great and Robert himself said that he made these parts in the comics more rushed in order to give the TV series a chance to expand it and make it different than the comics, you also seemed to forget the Robert IS one of the writers and he knew what he was doing will be different from the comics on purpose.
About the game, first of all, considering it's a game, it is clear that it's different from comics and because you control big parts of the story, it may seem better to each of us as it goes in our path.
I gave examples of great writing up there in the comments, and if you can give me one speech that even comes close to the level of sophistication and wording of Robert Kirkman, I'll take it back.
Also about the villains, have you actually forgot about Negan? He is the most well written and most realistic villain I've seen yet, he has obvious mental illnesses that explain his behaviour AND he seems to understand Rick and show soft sides of him if he wants to, but people who were raised "not to waste" that turn to cannibalism only 3 months after the outbreak and decided to violently chop children like Clem and Duck for food aren't realistic or expanded to me. Stranger is more realistic I agree but still villains like Negan are way more expanded and characterized.
I agree that Lee and Clem's relationship is way, WAY better than Rick and Carl's, but again, it's only because Robert didn't intend to focus on that while starting the comics, he clearly said the comics is about how people survive, function and regain their humanity back in the apocalypse, while the game's main focus is about Lee having a second chance in life and preparing Clem to this new world. And Lee is smart and a good character but Rick is smarter, an idealistic leader and the most resourceful man in TWD universe
Because it's a game, Lee can also be played as a douchebag so saying he's better is controversial to which "version" of Lee you're talking about.
I'm going to have to disagree with you here. I'd say that the comics are pretty even with the TV Show, and neither of them come anywhere clo… morese to Telltale's.

That's definitely part of it. It's like, okay Kirkman, you think the Fbomb is funny. I got it. I just like villains that are not so cartoonish. He and the governor don't see like real people to me in the comics. But that is just one persons opinion. Everyone else seems to like him.

Okay, having a title like this doesn't help anyone. Whilst I will respect you and your opinion saying it's "Irrefetutable" to think that the Comics or Show are better than the Video Game makes you come across as somewhat ignorant. May I just say I DO NOT think this about you or anyone here on the forum, I respect both you OP and the other members but I am just pointing out that to others who may not respect you as much may think of you due to the wording of the title.
Now let's get down to business. I believe that the Comics are better than the Video Game and the television show. The television show is my least favourite however I am still a dedicated viewer mainly because ever since Season Three the show has actually been getting better, and the new showrunner for the fourth season 'Scott Gimple' (I believe that's his name) has made the latest season the best one to date, thick with character development, tragedy, drama and the occasional zombie slaying (Sound familiair?)
The Comic has recently changed majorly to the point where I think newcomers to the fandom may need to defitnetly start at the beggining to undersand the rich characters Kirkman has crafted for the comic book series. Recently there was quite a big timeskip after The Walking Dead had just finished a two-parter story arc (All Out War - Part 1 and All Out War - Part 2). However the comics are very good, they may have some faulty writing here and there but they have some great dialogue and emotional moments (Rick speaking to Negan, Rick having the speech about 'The Walking Dead', Dale saying his goodbyes, Maggie and Glenn speaking shortly after attempted suicide, etc.) I feel like Kirkman has done a fantastic job transforming these characters.
The Game on the other hand will always remain a second favourite, itself has some problems however goodness it was amazing and shocking. When I first saw the trailer for 'The Walking Dead' I wasn't interested, I was more or less wondering who 'Telltale Games' are and worrying about what they would do to the series rather than be interested in the game however after a close friend reccomended it to me. I played it and I'm obssessed with it. I spend hours and hours re-playing, trying dialogue options, analysing characters and trying to predict or discuss certain themes or scenarios that can/will or have occured in the game. It's brilliant, with it's impeccable writing, however I can not truly say it's better than the comics.
Now some of the characters (Clementine, Kenny, Christa, Nick, etc.) are better than some in the comics, however I'm not going to say the comics are worse. Mainly because the comics has the advantage of being the "father" of the series. It is so large, (and I read somewhere Kirkman plans to write until the penultimate, Issue 300) and so vast with so many characters and moments for development the Game cannot surpass it unless they write BETTER than the comics AS A WHOLE. Kirkman and the writers of the game succeed in some aspects what they don't in others but Kirkamn ultimately comes out on top as I enjoy the Comics slightly more than I enjoy the Games.
However every piece of media so far is great, (even some of the books aren't that bad of a read) so really is there any point in arguing amongst ourselves? We're here to appreciate The Walking Dead but more specifficacly the 'Video Game'.
Not really, it's an exception and it's also comedic to break the depressing mood of the comics, their relationship grew to be the most detailed one in the comics AND TV show.
Half of what you said is that Robert Kirkman made it bad... on purpose? I'm not taking that as a legitimate point.
And for fair comparison of the TV Show vs. Comics, I think we've got to exclude anything that the TV Show hasn't had the chance to cover yet. But I'm more talking about how in the comics, Rick can seem like a great guy on second, and then just flashes to being an anti-hero, and then back again. I get that big events can change the characters' perception and such, but that's really the only way that Rick in the comic goes through his ups and downs as a character. Rick from the TV Show has more gradual changes. I like that.
As for a drop in quality... Well if you want to talk lighting effects, I don't really like Charlie's Adlard's artwork that much, and he makes some big mistakes or poorly drawn panels or splashes too. Let's keep this to the characters and writing, stuff like that. But really, I didn't notice much drop in quality for Season 2, but I will admit that there were some poor episodes, but in my opinion, a lot of the books from 9-16(Compendium 2) weren't that great.
The train scene with Kenny and Duck's death.
Kenny talking to the group about suicide in Episode 5.
Talking to the Stranger.
Lee's death.
Talking to Luke in Episode 1.
Trust me, there's lots from the game that tops the comics, and one or two good speeches doesn't make the series better.
Oh, and from the Show?
Yeah, the comics aren't the only series with well written scenes.
As for Negan, yes, he's a good villain, a great villain, but he isn't a very human character. He's meant to be completely over the top, which makes him a very fun, enjoyable character to read. He is complex, but compare him to the other villains of the series. The governor, outside of the novels, wasn't that great, and the Hunters aren't anywhere near as scary as the St. Johns, or complex for that matter. They were just people to hate, they provided fear. The St. Johns felt like real people, especially Andy.
Carver's ideas, however messed up there were, make a hell of a lot more sense for a villain than Negan. Negan just wants what he wants, so he takes it. It makes for a cool villain, as he's not necessarily in the way of their survival, more in the way of them building civilization, proves how far the series has come that survival is no longer really the #1 priority, but it doesn't make for an incredibly human villain. Carver was that. As much as Negan was a way to move the plot forward, Carver was a brilliant villain. Not saying that Negan isn't a great villain, just please don't say he's more realistic or complex than The Stranger or Carver.
The TV show by the amc has suffered a lot of reducing quality and fired crew members like Frank Derabont (Which was the best producer imo) … morethe colossal fuck up that is season 2 was really awkward to me, all the budget cuts which have caused awkward lighting and shadow effects and plot holes or entire episodes made of dialogues and conflicts that don't even relate to the plot.

I'm just going to say that Season 4 of the show was actually very good, and handled basically every storyline better than the comics did.
totally agree!! i really like the comics. but to me the order is:
TT Game>Comics>TV Series
That was kind of a WTF moment when I first read it, but to be fair, their relationship amounted to much more than that.

That's definitely part of it. It's like, okay Kirkman, you think the Fbomb is funny. I got it. I just like villains that are not so cartoonish. He and the governor don't see like real people to me in the comics. But that is just one persons opinion. Everyone else seems to like him.
Really? I find him one of the most interesting and funny characters in the comics.
Yeah, that's definitely a valid point.
We're here to appreciate The Walking Dead but more specifficacly the 'Video Game'.![:D :D](https://community.telltalegames.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)
You can also see Rick's "crazy eyes" face. I mean, seriously, what the hell is that?
Not my problem that you're taking everything you read literally. Lee gave his everything for Clementine. Ever heard of sacrifice through hard work?
