*SPOILER S2E3* Am I the only one that dislikes Jane?

I don't have a strong opinion on Jane, if anything it is slightly on the negative side. I had virtually no opinion on her for the entirety of In Harm's Way, even when she shot Troy I didn't really feel anything (except maybe some sympathy pain, if ya know what I mean). That is until the Episode 4 preview, when she advises Clementine to abandon the group. Now I don't think too strongly either way about this since I don't yet know the context, but I am wary. I'm not about to abandon Kenny and Luke and co. just so I can go be ruthless with this woman. I want to remain loyal to my friends until the end.

And for the record, I like Molly. I didn't at first, but she definitely grew on me after a while. She's not an amazing character in any way, but there's still something about her that's unique and likeable.

  • Yeah I don't like her either. There's just something not quite right about her. Can't put my finger on it.

  • I find it interesting that people have this idea that Jane doesn't seem like a "team player" or "would leave the group behind", despite the fact that all she did in episode 3 was go out of her way to help the group and continuously advise them on what to do to keep safe in the crowd of zombies. Plus, regardless of the line from the episode 4 preview that got everyone's assholes to clench up, she's apparently still sticking with the group and working alongside Clem and isn't underestimating her. I imagine some would say she's using them for her own needs, but to what end, I wonder? It's not like she has much to gain for herself by remaining with them, considering she was all alone when she was found. I guess we'll see.

Again, I strongly believe people wouldn't be as distrusting if she were a male character, 'cause that's just how this shit works 99% of the time, but I've already gone on a rant on that subject, so I'll spare you all the unneeded long paragraphs. I'll just say that I like her so far, and I don't even tend to like this kind of character, the "survivalist" as some would say. But if she does end up an antagonist, I'll still be glad she's around just for the entertainment of watching people condemn her for actions they would bend over backwards to defend for other characters.

  • edited June 2014

Precisely. The fans are really fond of pulling out death threats for characters who do not bend over for them the moment they meet them. Like Rebecca in Episode 1. She redeemed. Like Bonnie in Episode 2. She redeemed. Like Tavia in Episode 3. No idea if she gets a chance to "redeem" herself, but you get the idea.

Her character, at the moment, is quite clearly a female version of Chuck. Presents an unpleasant but wise concept to the player that they then are railroaded by the plot to submit to. With Chuck people were totally okay with it, he is a relatively popular character. Jane on the other hand...

In Jane's case, I personally only judge her writing, which at the moment has little to condemn due to her limited plot involvement. She has no established "weakness" other than her unpleasant views, but then again, Chuck was exactly the same. But there is a distant possibility that she turns into a Molly Sue 2.0, and THAT is what worries me.

Indeed, I too will enjoy, albeit whilst grinding my teeth together, watching people swing their verbal gun around on the slightest hint of an actually interesting character who happens to have a different view of things.

  • Well, she hasn't really had much character development, so who knows. She could have a heart of gold, or be a psychopath (which the game seems to be implying) and try to murder everyone in their sleeps. o-e

  • Well, it'd be weird if that happened due to how she likes Clem, but probably dislikes the rest of the group... so is that the pizza and icecream choice? I sure hope not.

Hell nawh, she'd make a good antagonist.

  • I don't trust her, shes a lone wolf and only really cares about herself, I mean the only reason she pitched the walker guts idea is because she actually saw a chance to save her own ass. and that "They're all going to die Clementine, don't let them drag you down with them" only makes me trust her less.

  • I reckon she will be the new Molly or Glenn.

Am I the only one that dislikes Jane?

Nope, you're not. I will admit I can't stand the woman, but I think my issues are to do on her design. She's clearly a beautiful lady, but what really annoys me is how they've made her skin look all clean and flawless under all that mud just randomly smudged on her face.

    Alt text

The mud REALLY annoys me! I hate the mud! And then it's the sexy voice, with the lip gloss looking lips. Lady, you have mud over your makeup painted face! Nobody else has mud on them like you do. Was it so hard to find a sink of water and dump your face in it for a couple seconds!? WAS IT!?

That said, I do feel like perhaps Jane will stand for something important, even if she ends up ditching the group in the next episode, like Jane could be what Clementine might end up becoming if she lets go of a lot of her humanity...and her hygiene. But really, whoever designed her, I will personally whack you with a pillow for making me feel this frustrated about mud more I ever had in my entire life, you French pickle omelet! T.T

Personality wise it's hard to say for me right now. It's clear to be she's not a big team player, and just wanted to get out of that camp. It seems more like Jane might stay with them for survival reasons than anything else, but all the same she might leave as soon as she gets the chance. As long as she doesn't go when the others need her and leave them for dead, then I'm not too bothered about her.

  • there is something about Jane that isn't settling. I think she's a sociopath

  • I don't trust her completely yet but I don't dislike her. She seems like an interesting character. When episode 4 comes out I might end up loving her.

  • It's kind of early to trust her. but I liked her!

  • Holy shit you semi blew my mind...
What if the pizza and ice cream choice is choosing between jane and the rest of the group?

  • Pete was almost on the same level of wisdom as Chuck, what with his speech about 'playing a role', same with Walter about relationships with other people. Pete and Walter combined probably have about the same amount of wisdom as chuck did.

    Conduit42 posted: »

Oh, yeah, yeah... Who knows? Maybe the group'll come across someone who had the same type of wisdom that Chuck had.

  • It's not that I don't like her, I just don't fully trust her. She's done nothing, as of yet, to warrant my dislike.

  • I hope you're not being sarcastic, because it'd make me look like an idiot right now, but anyway, I think it might be a contrast of "Being safe but being unhappy" or "Being happy but being unsafe", that's only if it were to happen though.

  • For the record, I offer no opinion as to whether she will be an antagonist. It's entirely likely she won't be.

I just think she would be several orders of magnitude more interesting as such than as Molly-redux, the tough survivor with a hidden heart of gold and a sad story hidden behind her harsh exterior. I want to see a true survivor, a pragmatist who sticks with a group when its to her benefit and discards them or kills them the moment they threaten her continued survival. If we compare Jane to Molly, I want to see a Molly who would have left Lee, Kenny and Clem behind for the walkers without a moment's hesitation. Not because she's 'evil', but simply because her survival takes priority over everything else.

  • To be honest, sadly this season i have found it difficult to get attached to any of the new characters. I think they did a good job making me like Luke though but most other characters in my opinion have jusy been written badly. Hardly any character development or background stories to then etc.

  • ABSOLUTELY 100% LIKE HER. Actually, Disliking Jane is a popular opinion.

  • Not Sarcastic :p

  • Well I'm not president of her fanclub.

  • I like her. She's like carol in the show.

I bet she'll have her official ''look at the flowers moment''

  • It's just my opinion, but when I distrust someone, I usually dislike them and vice versa.

It's not that I don't like her, I just don't fully trust her. She's done nothing, as of yet, to warrant my dislike.

I like Molly more, she had a lot of depth that Jane doesn't seem to have. This episode didn't really focus on Jane like it did with Molly last season so I wouldn't say I dislike her just yet.
