Why did **** die so quickly?

I realize this may have been discussed in the past, but this is something that really struck me about S2E1: Omid dies almost instantly upon starting the episode. I keep wondering what was the point of this, of re-introducing these beloved characters and have them chopped-off almost inmeaditely.
Of course it's because it chains the rest of the events, but I still think killing Omid so quickly and having no influence on the matter -could have been interesting if it was actually your fault or not- was a poor decision. It could have served as a motivation, not a revenge, but as a keep-going sort of thing.
Spending some more time with him and having the possibilty of chatting with him a little more would have helped a great deal to care for his death, at least for me. But as is, it's like.... Welp, that escalated quickly.

Anyone else agree?

  • Shock value. It was really annoying me, too.

  • I believe Telltale was trying to remind us what universe were in. I hated it too

  • TellTale knew people loved Omid, and that everyone would be happy to see Clem was retuined with him and Crista / the two figures on the hill. So his death was purely put in for shock value to remind you this is the Walking dead and it's not all sunshine and rainbows.

I still don't believe he's dead... and in my own little bubble, he's not. :)

  • I remember reading in an interview or something that they wanted to distance Clem from characters that she already knew like Christa and Omid at least for the first episode.

  • Telltale has been watching too much Game of Thrones lately. So they acquired the George R.R. Martin mentality of "Let me kill this loveable character just for the shock value instead of his death adding something important to the plot"

  • Telltale wanted to get rid of the familiar elements early on. They actually said this in an interview, but the reason they gave eludes me.

Their reintroduction is one of my lows for All That Remains. I have said that an early death for Omid would have been fine by me, if we had got other scenes prior to it properly reintroducing him and telling us exactly why we should give a fuck. Don't get me wrong, I already liked Omid at the time of his death, but it felt so... sudden in the wrong ways.

Imagine now what that introduction must have been like to people who for whatever reason did not play Season 1. "Oh, well, the happy dude died." Imagine it if the girl in that bathroom scene was not Clementine, but some new character.

  • Exactly! At least a conversation with Omid would a been nice. Even a "Omid will remember that" before his inevitable demise.

  • It was tragic and so soon. Then again, nothing is peaceful and it just goes down to utter shiz. Until all the zombies are finally gone, then the world can go back to life.

  • Didn't Omids death symbolize the loss of hope(the name Omid means hope). The hope meaning the ability to be truly happy and live a normal life. Or perhaps it was just used as a life lesson for Clementine.

  • See, I thought I was dealing with a character here, not a walking plot device like Reggie or many of the S2 cast. Have the symbolism there, have that plot point there, but have your characters there, too.

I was sort of a "Welcome Back" kick in the nuts. Also, I've been thinking lately that, since Kenny's return was probably planned, it would serve to make us fear for his life instead of just saying "Oh, he's from S1. He'll never die". And I don't know how lausy you are at math, but even a first grader knows that:

TWDG + Nice Guy = Dead Nice Guy

  • (TWDG + Nice Guy = Dead Nice Guy) (4) = Self-parody

  • What will happen when they reach (TWDG + Nice Guy = Dead Nice Guy) (5)?

    (TWDG + Nice Guy = Dead Nice Guy) (4) = Self-parody

  • Since Omid's name means hope, I think his death literally symbolizes a losing all hope.

  • It was the only way they could further the series. Omid is all about laughs most of the time, and without him it's a very serious game and they wanted to let the player know that there isn't happiness anymore. I love Omid, but I feel like it was completely necessary.

  • Pretty much...

Omid = اميد = Hope in Farsi (Persian)

Hope is dead. That's the major theme of All That Remains

Yeah, The Walking Dead TV Tropes page goes crazy philosophical sometimes. ;)

    Wow. That's some deep stuff.

  • S1: there is hope

S2:hope is gone fuck you we want money we're ea now.

  • True but remember main and supporting characters die all the same, not that wanted Omid to die but it had more impact than say a random person. I see it as a reminder of what type world Clem lives in. Rarely are there happy enedings in the Walking Dead. Plus new characters were introduced and symbolism ties with characterization, there is not a right form even if it ends up as a plot device.

See, I thought I was dealing with a character here, not a walking plot device like Reggie or many of the S2 cast. Have the symbolism there, have that plot point there, but have your characters there, too.

  • For the sake of the plot and for making the feels float back to the surface.
