Walking Dead-verse: The Menstruating Edition

edited June 2014 in The Walking Dead

Nobody be rude or weird about this, but I thought of something recently that made me really curious.

The Dead are attracted to blood, so it would make sense that when a person is menstruating, they would be more attractive to Walkers (also, where the hell do you find tampons?). I remember in the film Pitch Black when a character is on their period, the monsters come after them and its a really interesting development/really made me think of how real life would be in a dangerous situation like that.

The Walking Dead has at the minimum of 3 times dealt with pregnancy, a normal part of life that of course affects life more but far less often than menstruation itself.

I think that would make an interesting topic/development in some part of the game, show, or comic. I haven't read ALL of the comics so maybe they bring it up. "Uhoh, they are attracted to us, why? Oh, Sarah just got her period for the first time. Crap!"

(I think it really says something, how many people can deal with blood and guts, killing dogs, killing friends, and can't hear about menstruation.)

  • It's not like women gush blood everywhere when they're on their periods. The walkers aren't sharks, lol. Maybe a walker might get more attracted to a person on her period if she was very close, but by then the walker is gonna be interested anyway.

  • I know how periods work. but if someone doesn't have tampons/etc available, it would certainly cause problems. Its just a real-life situation that they never bring up in the Walking Dead-verse, even though its a fact of life that would make a lot of peoples lives very difficult during the zombie apocalypse

  • I'm thinking that since everyone would be under so much stress that if would mess with each female character's cycle. Since Sarah is sheltered more than the others, she may develop hers earlier than, say, Clementine, but overall the other women would probably end up missing periods from the high stress conditions they are constantly in.

  • Thats a good/interesting point....

  • They'd probably do what they did in the olden days and use rags. I think they are more at risk of getting an infection or something from the lack of hygiene than attracting walkers.

Sorry for sounding rude but, how come we have another thread about having a period in the apocalypse?

This is about the third thread about this topic

  • oops. I'm sort of new to the forum, and didn't see one before I posted. Sorry!

  • Why are there SO many threads about menstruation now!?

    Why!?

  • their not attracted to blood! xD I don't think walkers are vampires.

  • They are. I am thinking of the TV show (S2 particularly, they use blood on the gate/bus door etc to lure walkers to that particular spot to kill them. 8 miles out is the specific episode I am thinking of)

I don't know why these topics keep happening, but they're starting to get on my nerves tbh. And they're kind of gross. >_<

First of all ... 'that' blood ... isn't exactly blood. It's the lining of a uterus. There will be some blood in there, but a good portion of it is other stuff. (Tissue, the egg itself et cetera.) So IF walkers were attracted to blood ... I'm not even sure if that would affect them.

But then there's that whole thing? Walkers AREN'T attracted to the smell of human blood from what we've seen in the comics/game. (Haven't watched all the show.) Maybe to the smell of humans in general (if they can be fooled by covering yourself in walker smell) but to their blood? No. Like others have said, they aren't vampires.

Also I'm sure they could find the - ahem - 'supplies' they needed somewhere. When grocery stores and places got looted do you really think people's first priority would be tampons?? I'd reckon there's at least some left in the supermarkets. Not enough to last forever, sure, but there wouldn't just be none.

  • Actually, not sure if it's the same in the comics and I know the TV show isn't canon, but at one part Rick cut his hand and wiped the blood on a fence and a walker came and started licking it off, then Rick stabbed it while it was distracted. So they are in the TV show. Maybe it's different in the comics, or maybe what Rick did in that episode is the skill Jane's teaching Clem, it would draw a walker away from the herd.

  • Aw damn, ya beat me to it!

  • Oh my god, thankyou for being the one to clear this up. I really didn't want to have to start this :P
