Sorry to hear it, that's some truly awful shit...poor kid. I've been there with the whole perfect child, problem child thing (I'm a flaky, half-blind, "happy accident", so guess which one I am), but at least my folks are kind enough not to outright say it; that's the kind of shit that can ruin a person.
Also, I know a stranger's opinion doesn't count for much, but it's 100% not your fault. You did the best you could for him and the sad reality is that sometimes it's just not enough. You being there to comfort him at the end probably meant so much.
I've never been hit.
But my mom once beat the hell out of my brother when he accidentally swore. He zones out in class and his grades dro… morepped badly, the beating greatly affected him. He doesn't socialize that much and pretty much became closeted. My mom mentioned to him a couple of times of how I am much a better child than him.
Everything seemed to break down at that point, he ran away from home and I followed him. He rode his bike and pedalled fast, but events after that was unbelievable. He was hit by car. His body rolled to the side of the rode, and I gasped in shock and took my phone,
I called the ambulance and my mom, I held his hand, kissing it lightly and hoping for him to be okay. When we did arrive at the hospital, he was pronounced dead. on. arrival.
It was all my fault. I wish he was still alive. I was the reason why he died and I can't forgive myself. Sorry if It got too "emotional" but I wanted to share this to you guys.
I've got the belt as a child / teenager often. but I was never beaten, and I was also never slapped in the face. always in the arms, legs, or buttocks. at all times it happened I was wrong, and was warned several times to stop what I was doing. it never made me fear my parents, or see them as a threat. on the contrary, I loved them. I respected them and learned from them.
Actually I'm more worried about the lack of morals that parents have with their children today. if a parent hillside a finger on your child, everyone goes crazy and start talking about family violence, prosecutions and blá, blá blá... (sometimes, the child / adolescent processes the parents for ridiculous reasons ..) this protection in excess just makes the whole situation worse.
This excess drama by society pisses me off sometimes .. no one dies because of a slipper, or a belt.
Disciplining a child is very different from Spanking a child.
I'm just going to have to agree to disagree with you, because I've already told you that my parents always explained things to me, and that … moretaking me from the situation did not solve the problem. Constantly removing me from a situation I had no care about obviously did not change my defiant attitude, whereas in the end I got the belt and I stopped scratching the floor.

I don't see a contradiction - I don't believe children are bad necessarily because of their parents' bad behavior (though that sometimes is … morethe case). That's putting far too much of the onus on the parents. There are plenty of reasons why a child might act badly, whether learning from their parents or other people. Moreover, I believe poor actions are quite often the failure to restrain oneself from pursuing their desires through inappropriate means (IE: I want something, I take it, unless I come to understand why taking it is wrong, my gut will say to take it) The perfect example is Xun Zi, who said that human nature is inherently imperfect, that "the wood must be straightened before it can be used." There's a similar statement by Aristotle, something along the lines of 'philosophy has taught me to do without thinking what others do only for fear of the law.' Everything that's "right" and "wrong" gets taught to a child when they're young based from their parents, other people, and environmental factors that you just learn on your own(don't touch something hot, don't play with bees, etc.). If you take a closer look as to why parents violently hurt their children, it's because they're irrational, hypersensitive, angry people who basically just want to hurt someone that's weaker than them that annoyed them and pass it off as "punishment" or just overreact to harmless mistakes. Xun-hi was ignorant and was talking about conditioning someone to be able to control, which isn't good. Aristotle was saying that philosophy can give you broader perspectives on things apart from the rule of law, which is true and not a bad thing. The human mind shouldn't be biased or controlled by fear.
As for the police, it's their job to enforce the rule of law. However, most people who become police officers are shown time and time again through the news & internet that they're mentally unstable, power trippers who coin the terms "excessive force" and "police brutality". But there are some good police officers who'll only resort to violence when defending themselves in dangerous situations as they should.
As for punishment, it's usually a one-way, negative reaction to inflicting something more greatly bad against something presumed bad. Which only represses and arises new problems than actually fixes them. Two wrongs can't make a right, after all. Rehabilitation and resolution with rational elements is the proper way of dealing with problems without anymore consequences.
As for prison, it doesn't really make people better. Gangs reign supreme in them and people come out either worse or dead. As for the prison system overall, just look at USA's prison system. Ironically, they have imprisoned the most amount of people in the world, which shows how useless a prison's purpose can be. Society shouldn't just lock away problems. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/uk/06/prisons/html/nn2page1.stm
To answer your question as a whole, yes, it's all about control, authority, and mentally sick people getting what they want. Violence can only be justifiable when defending yourself against someone hurting you. Not when someone annoys you or breaks a rule that's pointless.

haha! You go to jail for beating a dog, yet. thousands and thousands of chickens, goats, fish, pigs and cows. are brutally killed and processed every day so you can have a nice steak, or a gold nugget in your lunch! oh! but if you hit my dog, or mistreat my cat you go to jail!
it's funny how society can be so hypocritical isn't it!
No, my parents didn't believe in corporal punishment and I was a pretty good kid growing up. As for my stance on hitting children in general, I'll let Louis CK take this one:

I guess everyone received a spanking from their parents at one point. Did I ever get smacked like that? Yes, I did, but I deserved it(not gonna get into details, though).
I think kids should receive a slap once in a while from their parents, but like you said, getting smacked around on a regular basis just encourages the kid to repeat the same behavior and not really learning anything.
Yes, that and more.
It's not a very comfortable thing to talk about, but I will say that like Clem said, you can learn to control the response. I felt really bad for Sarah in that scene.
"Getting" too personal? Guys, the entire basis of this thread is "Were you abused as a kid?". It was personal from the start. I honestly thought the guy who made it was trolling.

Metaphorically speaking. I don't mean it literally.
Believe me, I would have trouble understanding this concept even speaking metaphorically.
I do understand what you mean, but, still.
My behavior isn't entirely male-ish.
You're straight, Right?
I've never been hit my a human being before... does running into a wall count?
I was spanked before but honestly it didn't hurt so whatever.
I am, yes.
You're entitled by your own gender, While I was always curious about sexuality and not quite satisfied with just being a male. Some deep and sophisticated shit.
Well, I ain't no judge, it's not my place to do so.

Maybe that was god giving you a good ass-whoopin'.
This thread is way too personal and is getting out of hand.
If you say so. But I think I have control over my body, although my brain isn't always in the correct place.
Many times when I was a little boy. Too many to count. Fortunately my father is dead now, so at least the past can stay the past.
I agree with @Eddie_Maiden.

Damn I am sorry to hear that, if you need some one to talk to about how to deal with fucked up shit, send me a PM. Life sucks, i know all about it.
That's just...just horrible.
Heh, heh. Outta hand
Didn't realise.
Oh yeah, definitely. My father smacked me with both hands once - back and forth, back and forth. Sounds funny, but it wasn't.
Yeah, I had to read it twice before it hit me
you writing David Letterman's jokes? Sounds familiar.
No way, you'd have to have an IQ of 20 to write that kind of smack
Ah yes "Discipline", Whatever. I've made my point, Over, Over and Over again.

Pretty interesting that the majority of the comments think they deserved to be punished.
Sorry this happen to you.

Hmm, so OP spilling his guts like he did gave you no clue of that?
Probably, though I couldn't say when. I got bashed over the noggin with a steel chair once though.
That shit right there was a cheap shot.
We just want to get to know you GOUSTTTT.

Ok, ok, this thread is getting too personnal.

yes
I can honestly say I've never been smacked like that in my 25 years on this earth. Lord knows if anyone touches me like that, we fighting.
