Telltale is the best!

Due to life circumstances, I have not had time for cool games in a long time. The last time I visited here was four years ago, according to my profile information. My other computer with my Telltale games is long gone, and I've not put a single game on this computer. I decided to see if this site was still around, which it is, and all the games I purchased are still there just waiting to be downloaded! I see that there are newer games that are crying out for me to buy and download. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks to Telltale for sticking around and making customers like me very happy!

  • Welcome back! I was here four years ago, but can't say I remember you from back then. :) One thing to note, though, is that Telltale's game style has changed quite a lot in the last four years, so I suggest you do some research before you go on a spending spree to see if you're really going to like them.

Hope life circumstances are going better now.

  • Thanks, WarpSpeed, life is better these days. I'm not surprised you don't remember me because I only made comments in the Monkey Island section, and not many at that. No worries on buying games. Money doesn't drop in my lap, so I tend to check things out before I purchase any type of item. I never finished all the episodes in Monkey Island, so I'll entertain myself with that one for a few weeks. ☺

If you haven't already, you should check out Sam and Max: The Devil's Playhouse. That and Monkey Island are some of Telltale's last Seasons with typical point and click adventure gameplay. (EDIT: Oh, and check out Poker Night and Poker Night 2. Those games are great as well and still retain Telltale's great comedy even as they otherwise focused on drama.)

After they made a game based on Walking Dead, Telltale became a lot more mainstream, which is kind of cool to watch unfold as I've been a fan of Telltale around 2008-2009 or so. As you've probably already seen, they get to work with really large franchises, which is interesting to see as a fan prior to Telltale's newfound popularity.

Telltale's newer games focus more on story investment than puzzle solving nowadays as WarpSpeed alluded too. Instead of puzzle solving, the newer titles focus on making (mostly) moral choices that carry across the Season. The stories are, in my opinion, even better than the stories from the older games. However, puzzles aren't really that frequent in Telltale's newer titles.

It's a cool experience, but most of the immersion depends on how much you like the story instead of the gameplay for Telltale's newer titles. I love both the old and new gameplay formats, but I could easily see how people would prefer one style over the other.

From the 2010 set, if you haven't already played it I heartily recommend Hector: Badge of Carnage as well, along with Puzzle Agent 2 (and Puzzle Agent 1 if you haven't already played it).

Those, and the ones Blind Sniper mentioned above are really the last puzzle oriented Telltale games. Oh, and Back to the Future: The Game, but it holds your hand a bit more than previous Telltale adventures, although it does show some moments of Telltale's ability to make clever puzzles (such as the puzzle to get inside the speakeasy in episode 2).

Adding to the games already mentioned, Law & Order: Legacies is the only other one of Telltale's latest games that breaks from their current play style of moral choice mixed with quick time events style of gameplay (well, Jurassic Park: The Game is mostly quick time events with no moral choice gameplay, save for one choice at the end of the game).

If you haven't already, you should check out Sam and Max: The Devil's Playhouse. That and Monkey Island are some of Telltale's last Seasons

  • Definitely finish Monkey Island, as the last few episodes take you for quite a ride! You might have to replay from the start if your memory is hazy from four years ago, but the nice thing about episodic adventures is that if you don't want to, you don't have to (as opposed to the traditional all-in-one adventures when you lose your save games).

Sam & Max is an adventure like Monkey Island, though not exactly the same, of course. You have to play season 1 to understand my forum handle here. If you plan to play it all, start from season 1, even though it's not the best, because the episodes build on each other. (You will not understand the ending of The Devil's Playhouse if you haven't played episode 4 of season 2, for example.) If you're only planning to play one season, though, go with The Devil's Playhouse.

I can echo the endorsements for the Poker Nights and Puzzle Agents if you like those types of games. They're not adventures but they're fun nevertheless.

Hector is good but a bit raunchy and not exactly respectful to law enforcement, so play that one only if you're OK with that. One of the puzzles is a nice Monkey Island tie-in, though.

I wasn't inspired enough by Back To The Future to finish the first episode. Maybe someday.

Suddenly having lots of free time could be good or could be bad, depending on how it came about, so I was being careful. :) Glad it's a good thing!

Thank you, everyone, for your advice! I've restarted Monkey Island and will finish it this week. I have purchased the Sam & Max series and look forward to starting those. Once I've finished Sam & Max, I'll look back at your comments and decide what will be next. I really appreciate that you took time to explain the games.
