A "Book of Fables" Equivalent for The Walking Dead
After playing The Wolf Among Us, I couldn't help but think about how cool it would be if The Walking Dead had it's own version of the Book of Fables, were you could unlock entries about characters, places, and things as you come across them.
I get that TWAU has an extensive lore from both the comics and the original fairy tales, and requires something like that so the player can keep up with the world, but a lot of us have noted how much less character development there is in TWD Season 2, given the lack of hubs and the shorter episodes. Unlockable character entries would give us the information we'd like to know that we're not being given in the game, and it would endear us more to the characters because we'd feel like we know them better.
Obviously it's too late for something like this to actually get implemented, but I just wanted to know if anyone else felt like this would have been a nice addition to the game as well.

That would be cool. We don't know the background information of most of the characters
It would have been cool. Something like that might change the way we view certain characters, knowing their story.
That'd be cool.
I'd rather have hubs back, but this works too.
It would have been good to know the Cabin Group's or Carver's past.
Who knows, maybe Carver was a chef once, or a firefighter? Or a dog tamer? Maybe he got wife and kids? Maybe he was a good human being, really kind?
I'm pretty sure he wasn't pushing people of roofs or tried to kill them with Walkie Talkies.
Maybe, then I would have felt a little bad. Not for William Carver, but the human he once was.
There's an unused line where Bonnie says Carver used to be "some kind of engineer," which is how he managed to get electricity and plumbing running in Howe's.
I don't know. I feel like if they need to give us that much background on characters they created, There's something wrong there. The book of Fables works because they're established characters that we need to know the history of. There's not really any lore in the Walking Dead universe. Everything we need to know about the characters should be in the narrative. I understand what you mean, but I feel like it would be a crutch.
This.
Plus, in the real world, which the Walking Dead should stick close to, we're not going to know everything about everyone we meet.
Why not both?
-Mexican music plays-
Ok, sorry about the meme.
That's part of the situation Clem is in though, not knowing. To break around the set and show us things the character doesn't know would be contradictory to the way TWD works, especially following her story and her story alone so closely.
I see what you guys mean. I wouldn't mind getting more information about the characters after we complete the game. Although that probably sounds dumb.
I'd have to say that doing that would probably effect my decisions. If we knew everyone's backstory we'd mostly choose the nice guy options because we would know Carver had a sad past, Carlos wife died which is why he's so protective Sarah etc. It's like life, we're not gonna immediately know everything about everyone because we have to let them get to know us. Plus the mystery is half the fun
Actually, after we finish the game I'd be completely alright with it!
It'd be interesting to unlock a character once they're dead, so we can't use their backstories to influence our decisions.
Hmm... maybe in Season 3 or something, Clem gets a journal and writes down her thoughts and opinions on characters both past and present. This book serves as a Book of Fables. The diary's content depends on previous choices and your choices when dealing with the characters and events and shit.
That's a good idea!
i support this idea. I want to learn why Carley has troubles with batteries.
What would it be called? A Book of Urbans?
Book of walker food.
Pls no. This would give them more reasons to avoid character development within then episodes.
Book of the Dead? You know, like the Egyptian funeral book?
If we knew their background, some of us may have a new perspective of said character/s.
What about Survival Guide? By this I mean, instead of just obtaining and cataloguing information about Characters, why not have things such as memories and pictures or even short summaries of the events that transpire throughout the Season?
Well, we wouldn't need it if TELLTALE STARTED TO DO SOME GODDAMN CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.
This is a neat idea, but I don't think it would work well with TWD universe. If every character was given a background right off the bat, it would ruin the whole "mystery" aspect behind them. I think background should be revealed with character development.
If instant know-all background is a problem, it could be sort of an in-game thing, such as Clem's Diary, or Clem's Survival Guide.
She'd note down entries on stuff based on her perspective.
Judging by the achievements some of the surviving characters will probably get some character development.
Why not just have like Clementine's diary where she writes what she finds out about each character? XD
Exactly what I was thinking
I really like that idea.
I thought the same thing as I was scrolling down and reading. Take my upvote.
I think a diary of Clem's impressions and thoughts would actually be good.
And it makes sense with her character, right? She's a young girl after all. They usually love keeping diaries and that kinda stuff.
...At least I did back then
Clem in fact used to like making up stories in her treehouse before the ZA,right? So it's not that far fetched that she'd enjoy writting her daily adventures and happenings on a diary.
It could actually have been a very cool thing for Telltale to do. It would have given Clem even more personality.
Yeah,we don't know who MOST of these characters were in the past before the apocalypse...so it wouldn't make a lot of sense you could have like:Clem,Lee and Kenny....
Sam & Max Season 3 done something like this. It allowed you to read a "Story so far" as well as notes on characters you've met and your opinion of them (from the character's point of view). It was really neat and was hoping something like that would've been implemented in TWD Season 2. Characters especially like Clem and Kenny could do with that since they've got a rather extensive history at this point.
It is a nice idea in theory, but TWAU characters are mostly static while TWD characters are meant to change and stay unpredictable. Character info just wouldn't remain relevant for long and would cloud player judgment.
Why didn't TTG do this? I'm crossing my fingers for a S3.
I am really impressed you guys, this has been a pretty positive thread overall. Instead of the constant downvoting, hate. I gave everyone a +1.
Let's hope so, Prink. Let's hope so.
