How can we NOT lie to Hershel in Episode 1?

I just completed Episode 1. I consciously tried to tell the truth to everyone in the Episode.

After speaking to Hershel, the game flashed a message saying that "Hershel believes your story". He still told me to try to learn to lie better, which I understood (misunderstood?) to mean that I shouldn't be honest to everyone about my past.

I was surprised, after completing the entire episode, that I, along with a lot of other players, chose to lie to Hershel.

When was this? When did I lie to him? There was no option to tell him I was arrested. I chose the nearest option that I got a ride from a cop out of Atlanta. I did not claim to be Clementine's neighbor or her babysitter, but "just a guy". I told him I was searching for help in her house. The game even told me that Hershel believed my story. What did I do wrong?

I don't mind re-playing the Episode to get the honesty choice, but it would be good to know if I got it right without having to finish the rest of the episode. Any help would be much appreciated.

P.S. I really loved the relationship between Lee and Clementine.

  • I just recently played the first season as well, and he accused me of lying, so when his son was dying, i chose the kid. That'll teach him.

  • Hmm, maybe what you said in the barn did not coincide with what you said the previous day. If it doesn't add up, he'll still claim that you lied.

That might be possible. I didn't know a single thing about Lee (except that he was arrested for a crime), since I don't know anything about him, so I might have gotten confused.

I will try to be consistent on my replay. Thanks!

  • Lol I chose the kid as well, but not as punishment :) I always choose the weaker person... the kid over the grown up, and later, the girl over the guy.

  • I didn't lie, lies will only get bigger until you can't hide them and by then it will be too late to cover your lie up and besides... Hershel let you stay at his farm, he gave you shelter when you needed it... how can you lie to him?

  • Easily. Lets be honest here, Lee is a escaped con. You think he wouldn't lie at that time? He just got out of the pokey, he don't want to go back.

  • He never accused me. Are you sure you didn't accidentally lie when he was stacking hay in his barn? That counts as one of them too I believe.

  • I didn't lie either, i told him i was getting out of Atalanta, got a ride with a cop, etc. He still accuses you of lying, i think it just part of the tutorial. If you do lie, he berates you. They didn't make another dialogue for people who tell the truth, i 'm thinking Telltale got lazy there.

  • Lee doesn't seem like the type to lie to me... the thing is, we never really know how Lee himself would act in the situation

I think anyone would in that situation, where he faces the possibility of imprisonment for life, he would lie to some guy he barley knows. He wouldn't want to go back to jail.

  • Make sure you say you were with a police officer when he bandages your leg and reiterate this when you're in the barn. All he does then is warn you that he knows you aren't telling the whole story and tells you to be careful of how much you let slip. He still looks angry but he won't accuse you of being a liar.

Hershel is kind of a dick in the game.

  • He always accuses me, that is why i let his son die. Judgmental jerk.

  • I wouldn't lie, I would think being truthful to one who shelters you from certain doom is the least I would do. Besides... there are no jails, there are no criminals, there are no people really... there's just the living and the dead

  • Not intentionally. But sometimes I had to guess his past... like whether he really had family in Macon or an ex-wife. We aren't given this information.

  • Thank you. I think you may be right. Perhaps I chose a wrong option in the barn. I will try it again.

  • Maybe. I forget all the choices in dialogue but it's something like "I was heading out of the city," "I was in a car," "I was with a police officer." Lee then says the officer was just giving him a ride. Then in the barn, he asks who you were with. You have to say "I was with a police officer" again, and Lee will talk about the car accident. Then, when Hershel offers advice, say "sure."

  • I don't know either, even if I tell the truth he keeps sayin that, and that annoys me

  • It doesn't really matter anyway if he thinks your lieing or not. I think the point in having Hershel in the game was just to show you that what you say has impacts on characters and that its probably best to be honest. Like if you hide you bite in episode 5, Omid and Christa won't help you find Clem but if you do show the bite then they will. Or if dont tell Kenny your a murderer then it just makes it worst when he finds out later.

  • Yes I agree with you MrAppleJuice... seeing as it is the first tough decision

It doesn't really matter anyway if he thinks your lieing or not. I think the point in having Hershel in the game was just to show you that w

  • Actually I hid my bite and said I wanted to go alone and they all came with me except for Ben who I let die because I thought it was a cutscene and I had my finger on the q waiting to mash it. I didn't replay my first time so I was kinda sad my stupidity cost Ben his life (though to be fair his stupidity costs some deaths too so its even lol).

The only choice I ever wanted to re-do was choosing not to cut off Lee's arm but I was like it's too late the infection has already spread....right, RIGHT??? LOL

  • About 4 months ago. I'm not going to play it again until Season 2 is finished so I can marathon the series. But I have good memory, and he never accuses me of lying.

How long is it since you played the game? I have tried several times but I can't make him not accuse me anymore.

  • I actually didn't lie to him at all, and he didn't accuse me of it. That's why I got sort of confused when people kept saying "i ddnt fkn lie hershal".

  • I think most people "lie" to Hershel unknowingly when you talk to him again in the barn, just before the whole tractor incident. I've had no issue here, largely because I've always spoke of my plans towards Macon and reuniting with family, then how Lee was being attacked and Clem came to the rescue. Not once have I been accused of telling a lie after that.

Either that, or he calls you out on your lie to Shawn if you say you are Clem's neighbour/babysitter. I personally went with "just some guy" who found her.

  • I see you point but I dont see it that way..

Either way he says the same, but I think its a learning thing for the player where you learn about telling the truth...

But I do see your point, im just saying its vital part of dialogue where the player learns that what the choose to say to people can and does have consequences.

Ok you may not lie but you dont exactly tell him your story, and he has more than enough reason to be suspicious of you being just some guy who picks up a young girl, and dont forget he doesnt realise the full implications of the zombie outbreak at this point

  • Besides, if you lie he will accuse you, I always told the truth in games that give those types of decisions, and I never regretted doing so
