Season 3, minium spes and cutoffs

edited July 2014 in The Walking Dead

Hi,

I was just wondering, will The Walking Dead season 3 upper the minimum specs for Android.
I noticed that the PC specs stayed the same for Season 1 and 2 whereas Android versions didn't, so this is why I'm only asking about Android.

The Walking Dead: Season One for Android required Adreno 200 series, Mali-400 series, PowerVR SGX540, or Tegra 3, whereas Season Two requires Adreno 300 series, Mali-T600 series, PowerVR SGX544, or Tegra 4 to be able to run the game. Also, 0.2ghz was added for the minimum

I'm looking into getting a new android device, particularly the Moto G, and I am a fan of TWD, so I don't want to be 'let go of' for season 3 as the specs on Moto G basically cover all (1.2gz Quad core, Adreno 305 and 1gb ram) so if the requirements get raised again, I don't know if I'd be able to play it IF I bought the Moto G.

Also, don't be too quick to judge the Moto G, Apple's iPhone only have dual cores (iPhone 5, Dual-core 1.3 GHz Swift (ARM v7-based)) and 1gb ram for Apple iPhone 5 and also has the GPU PowerVR SGX 543MP3 which is very close to the base level of minimum specs for TWD Season 2 (s1 540 s2 543 min).

If a Telltale staff member can confirm whether the specs will be staying the same, give an educated guess, or tell us if the Telltale is being upgraded by a certain extent that'd be great. Since season 3 has not been announced, and season 2 not completed, the question is better put "Is the Telltale tool going to be upgraded in the next few years that it renders xxx GPU's/ below X.X ghz XXX CPU's, below X GB of Ram out of the minimum specs table". This neither confirms any game or denies any future game.

Also, I'd like to here other member's opinions in regards to this.

Thanks!

Edit: I also believe this beneficial information to give an estimate of early as people are going to want to know about games where saves carry over and if they will be able to carry over their saves or not in a game where saves would carry over between seasons

  • Season 3 isn't even announced yet so you definitely won't get answer about specs :)

If there is a season 3 (which there most certainly will be) it will be developed with the Telltale tool, which is already released.

I think the question could also be put like this "Is the Telltale tool going to be upgraded in the next few years that it renders xxx GPU out of the minimum specs" This wouldn't actually confirm the release of TWD S3. Please excuse my ignorance for making this presumption lol, I just had it pretty clear in my head they will be making it, don't you?

I have added your point to the original topic.

I don't know anything, but I believe they added something to the Telltale Tool that they're using in Tales From The Borderlands, so it might be possible that they'll use it in TWD season 3 (if there is a season 3).

  • Probably a PS Vita export module?
Or do you mean something else, I did a quick google search and couldn't find anything.

  • Yeah, I agree with you on that one.

  • Specs won't be known until the game is nearly finished and out the door. It's rare if game specs are released before the game is in beta and I've never heard of game specs being released before a game's even made. Updates to game systems, graphics, etc can all push up requirements even if the engine is the same. Since it's taken nearly 2 years for TWD S2 to be fully released after S1 was fully released, chances are a season 3 (if there is one) won't be fully released until summer or fall 2016. With advancements in technology ... it's very plausible current phones won't run many games made 2 years from now. Companies want you to upgrade and given the Apple iPhone hype, apparently they've convinced people they have to upgrade regularly. It's not in their best interest to develop something now that you'll still be using 2 years from now.

I honestly wouldn't worry about getting a top end phone right now just because chances are you'll upgrade it again in another 18-24 months. If you can, sit on the money you'd spend on the phone and just buy one next summer or fall. Doing so would let you afford an even better phone and if you buy it around the time TWD S3 comes out, you'll be sure that can run the game. If your current phone is working for you right now, why upgrade?

When it comes to what the specs for TWD S3 will be, as it stands, no one will know until just before the game's released. Time will tell.

I understand what you are saying.

We all know that S3 would be made with Telltale tool, and I can't see many new game changing mechanics being added/updated that would influence the game a lot.

My whole perception here, is that The Walking Dead season 3 probably wont be more resource/graphical intensive, if anything the two years will give them time to optimise the Telltale Tool.

You're right in some ways, but you are not looking at all manufacturers, for example, phones released two years ago, two examples would be the S3 and RAZR i, both are now running the 4.x series without root.

For them to be running the latest os branch from two years ago, that's pretty good.

It's also important to find a manufacturer which is willing to give guaranteed support/updates. If you can't get updates from the makers, it's always possible to get them from custom ROMS.

Yeah but seriously, the real question is, what do you see The Walking Dead game adding in (some mechanic) that's going to be so revolutionary to change the specs from what it is on season 2?

Graphically, the game could have a low/medium/high setting system, or in-depth settings, or preconfigured/determined based on your specs.

Also, I have a HTC Wildfire running Gingerbread (2.3), CM7 and I'm more than willing to update from my 2010 phone. In the early few years of Android 2008-2011 phones were getting outdated quickly, now it is not so much the case.

If you've got your eyes on a price drop, not worth it. The longer you wait, the less prime time android version you will be able to enjoy. That kind of the idea waiting worsens's phone's lifespans as the waiting and them (manufacturers) releasing new phones/outdating phones very quickly goes together - ideally you'd want to squeeze every bit of time you can out of your phone's life; unless the wait would be for newer phones [which would be expensive and then be worthless after a few years which also is bad].

There's a happy balance, and I can only find it in budget mid-end phones like the Moto G.
