Civil War Discussion Thread
With Episode 4, Amid the Ruins, on the way, with Parker's Run being a big part supposedly, I figure we should have a discussion about the Civil War here.
Feel free to talk about anything involving the Civil War, from your ancestors' roles in the fight to cool stuff you know about it to how much of a dickhead Nathan Bedford Forrest can be!

Civil War as in the American Revolution, or a different war I don't know about?
I just know that we Aussies should have had a Revolution as well, that way we wouldn't have the bloody union jack on our flag.
The Civil War as in North vs. South, slavery vs. industry, Lee vs Grant, Lil' Napoleon George McClellan.
Grant? McClellan? Ya'll know it's all about the Burnside...
What about the Pope?
Ehhhhhh close, but not cigar. Sorry. :P
Tecumseh?
Tecumseh Wolverine, you mean?
snikktt :P
Fun Fact: Amid The Ruins will release on the anniversary of the Union rout at Bull Run. The politicians in DC demanded that the inexperienced Union Army march on Richmond (the Rebel capital). The Confederate Army of Virginia met them near Manassas and the result was the bloodiest battle in US history up to that point. Legend has it that DC residents came out to picnic and watch the carnage unfold. When the Union forces were thrown into retreat, many of the civilians were caught up in the rout back to Washington.
Whoa...
So anyone who had ancestors in the war?
Nope, surprisingly. I have some other war vets in my family thought.
Great granddad on my mom's side was a supply corps officer with the Italian cavalry, during the Occupation of Libya. He's best known for kicking a mean-spirited donkey off a cliff in fit of anger. Thankfully, he left the army and got the fuck out of Italy before Mussolini took power.
The other guy was a 2nd relative who died before I could meet him. According to my Granddad, he fought at Kassarine Pass in '43. Long-story short, Afrika Corps did their thing and slaughtered the Americans. He made it out, traumatized but alive...and then he got died in a construction accident or something a few years later. Shit luck, yeah?
My mom's cousin flew for the Navy, he played the MiG pilot in Top Gun.
Sorry for the rambling tangent. Bored and in the mood fr storytime, I guess.
Whoa... Anyway, that's all real cool though. Especially the part about the MiG pilot.
I got some cool stories too.
My great-great-great grandfather (on my paternal grandmother's side) fought in the Civil War as a bodyguard for Lee. He was at Appomattox and had to walk his way (and ride a horse) all the way down to Mississippi.
My great-grandfather fought in WWII in the Pacific and Korea as a radioman. Apparently, he was put on one of the first nuclear submarines after the war.
My grandfather on my mom's side was a helicopter pilot who died under mysterious circumstances in a Texas training accident.
1 I have a feeling his butt hurt after riding a horse for that long!
3 Wow jeez. Maybe the aliens shot him down?
Hell yeah. He got it in Tennessee and rode down to southern Mississippi WITHOUT a saddle. cringe
From I understand, because the G-men burned/hid all the evidence, it could very well have been some special ops training.
