Clementine?

Ok, guys, help me out here.

Clementine is black?

Cause I keep reading articles and posts stating 'african-american' and 'non-caucasian' and such.

But I never got this impression from her. She is significantly fairer of complexion than any of the characters I was able to identify as black in the rest of the series. Lee, Mike, Alvin..... that one guy from the Vernon's group who was determinantly killed in 400 days. Maybe not fairer than Rebecca.

I'm not mad about it or anything, I just always considered that part of Lee's redemption arc. Even though he's a black guy going to prison, it's not like he's a shitty person, some terrible racist criminal, cause he took care of this little girl without any consideration for her race.

Is this a revelation to anyone else?

  • Yes she is. Both of her parents were african-american, you can see their photo in S1E1.

I saw their photo, but it was very dark in the house, and it seemed like there was an artistic choice there in coloring their photo blue other than the outlines? Like I said, I NEVER got this impression. Stupid me I guess.

  • Nah it's was always pretty clear. My little sister is Clem's complexion but I'm darkskinned like lee. Our parents are both black one light one dark. It seems a lot of people get confused at the different shades of color black people come in but it's cool you didn't know.

  • I know there are darker and fairer skinned black folks, but it just seemed to me that there was an artistic choice there about having the black characters have much darker complexions so that people wouldn't be confused about, for instance, Omid being of middle-eastern lineage.

Come to think of it, I've read that Christa was black too! Her complexion was so close to Omid's, I always thought they were just a middle-eastern couple!

    As noted above, stupid me.

  • Yea christa is black too I always knew that. It's pretty easy for me to tell what their races are but it's cool if you can't tell.

  • Yeah, though when I first met her in Season 1, I thought she was white XD It wasn't until the trailer for Season 2 until I found out she was urban.

  • Her parents both look black of some sort, however Clementine's eyes make me think she has some Asian or maybe even Egyptian in her.

  • You mean Boyd? Yeah. And Clive was black too.

  • Urban..oh god

  • Well, Rebecca I could tell was black, but that was more due to her hair than her skintone.

Like I said, I always just thought that was part of showing that Lee is a good man at heart despite the circumstances we met him in.

Kudos to the game for not being so white it glows in the dark though.

Boyd it is. I can't recall most of the other characters from Vernon's group, other than Joy, cause she had a speaking part and my choices in 400 days always got Boyd killed. Course, there are named characters I didn't know had names - Fievel, for instance. And the dog Lee dug up had a name too, which escapes me.

And while we're at, I didn't notice Roman was one of the corpses at the end of S2E1 either.

You mean Boyd? Yeah. And Clive was black too.

  • clem's mom was mixed white and black her dad was mix black and spanish a friend had a mom and dad with 3 kids two looked like clem's color one kid was dark skined

  • Ok, as long as it's not just me. There seems to be a lot of details I missed at first. Like how Roman was one of the corpses at the end of S2E1.

  • Heh, I don't think you've got any worries about being perceived as racist, if that was going to happen it would've been the first reply.

Pleasantly surprising to have a mature discussion on the internet.

What, did you think she was white?

edit: Wait, you're mentioning it as a race issue? What? How is that even slightly related and why bring it up?

  • That many people couldn't tell she was black? It obvious to me cuz my sister looks just like her plus the hair is a dead give away.

  • Well, I haven't, so no, WE haven't.

But if you have, sorry for making you read another thread about it, I guess?

I was just surprised by that information, because the first time I heard about it was after reading a S2E1 review that mentioned it. And an article on pcgamer.com that was linked in the Steam news about a summer camp where kids learned some programming stuff that was titled, I believe, 'Coding Clementines: Black girls play games too' or something very close to that.

  • Yes, I did. Just compared to Lee, I figured she was somewhat tanned.

It seemed reasonable that she played in the sun a lot. Even in the sidebar here, Clem looks white.

  • No problem, it's just that the mods may find it and shut it down/merge in a bit. While you're waiting, I think they arrived at the consensus:

Ed and Diane are (were) Black & Half-Black

  • Well this whole race thing is stupid anyways...we are all human beings

    Equality #worldpiece #SaveNi....Fuck

  • Ok, I can see how the hair would be a giveaway AFTER she got her haircut, but at first I didn't even get the impression of wavey/curliness from it.

Maybe if I had been able to smell relaxers :p.....

That's a pretty deep deconstruction from not the most advanced graphics engine.

  • ONOES! MY CREDITS!

Dunno what to say guy, she totally looked white to me. Not like Duck, who's that Irish kind of white, but more like maybe an Italian kind of white.

But...she doesn't look white at all. I'd give you some credit if you guessed that she was asian...but white? What?

  • I just...have you ever seen a white person before? I just don't understand how you could possibly confuse this even slightly.

Race isn't stupid, perceiving others to be inferior or superior purely on the basis of race is.

  • I AM a white person. So I could be said to be familiar.

Which also likely explains me projecting whiteness onto her in the first place.

I don't understand how I was supposed to infer that she wasn't white, like I said... totally looks white in the sidebar, her lips are pinkish rather than being a tannish shade like fairer skinned black people I've known personally.

I just...have you ever seen a white person before? I just don't understand how you could possibly confuse this even slightly.

  • So you're white, and you're also mentioning in your primary post how awesome it is that Lee protects clem even though she isnt black like he is? You seriously have some strange level of thinking and race on the brain. Dude, she's clearly not white. Maybe mixed, but not white. And lee protected her regardless of her race, like a lot of people would.
