Why Russians?

Is it just me, or does the addition of a group of "evil Russians" just feel really out of place? Not simply the fact that they conveniently appeared out of nowhere, but just that, heading north in the continental United States, it just feels strange and very "Hollywood". I mean I know it's technically possible that a random group of people who don't know each other who all speak the same language could have met up and formed a group when the total number of humans has dropped greatly, but it seemed ridiculously forced to me.

I could understand if it was Mexicans or something given the physical border between the two countries, but "we need new Bad Guys (TM) - just add Russians" reminded me of TellTale Games: Call of Duty...

Anyone else feel something similar?

  • Oh, I did. They were completely out of place, not to mention how stereotypical they were. I even made a thread about it.

  • There's probably an explanation somewhere. LIke a holiday group or something being stranded after the outbreak began. I'll reserve judgement for Episode 5.

  • Yeah I am annoyed at this too and I totally agree with you 100%.

I bet we don't even get an explanation for why they are there or anything, but yeah this season goes from bad to worse.

  • It was dumb as hell, should've been Vince and the chain gang.

  • THAT would have both been much more realistic AND a way to tie in 400 Days a bit more.

    What a missed opportunity...

It was dumb as hell, should've been Vince and the chain gang.

  • at the start of episode 5 if i get the option to bitch out arvo and punch him in the face repeatedly

i'm taking that choice in a heartbeat

  • Who said they were evil? But anyways I don't think any south-american group would go this far north.

  • They won't give you that option because it would mean that you'd be playing as a bad Clementine, the worst you can do now is to not say anything.

  • Well, the token "Skinhead Russian Leader Covered in Tattoos" doesn't look like a character they came up with to have a heart of gold...

  • I know as soon as I saw him I was like wtf? This game really is going downhill fast.

  • I assumed they were immigrants or visiting or something, then got stranded when the apocalypse happened.

  • It doesn't matter why they're there, it's the fact that they are just so stereotypical and out of place for TWDG.

  • God, I really hope RT doesn't hear about this... "Independent video game producer Telltale Games released a new episode of their acclaimed series, only this time the villains are Russian criminal stereotypes. Tonight's debate: Is this another example of Washington's Russophobic agenda? or is it simply Western Mainsteam Media propaganda seeking to create a new Cold War mindset? RT, Question More."

  • umm..my theory is a little strange but ....a while back after season 1 ended there was a russian guy on here, and he came up with the great idea to have snow and hard conditions for season 2,i think Telltale maybe took notice of him and also added russians because thats where he was from...i know it's crazy

  • He's criminal,not skinhead.

  • I can imagine someone posting a gif right now showing old Indiana Jones turning around and saying, "Russians."

  • I'm still working on translating that conversation fully (it's hard to hear when they're all talking over each other) but at one point Burich (skinhead dude) even says "You think I'm a nice guy?" implying that they'd be dead wrong if they made that assumption; although, who the hell would ever assume that?

I'm sorry, but it does actually matter. The United States is a pretty diverse place even without tourists. Why would a group of Russians be any more out of place than any other ethnic group?

    1. Because TT wants to play with politics and Putin
    2. Russians are a cliche type villain
  • It's because they got Baba Yaga on their side.

Oh wait that was his sister?

    Oops

  • Didn't you hear? Telltale operates out of a studio that believes it's in 1982.

  • :D They will invite "experts" that will confirm that TTG is actually part of CIA and the reason episodes where delayed was actually to incude Russians.

  • After all this Ukraine stuff and other political crap that is happening between America and Russia, yeah... pretty plausible.

Where the fuck is Eddie? That guy from the slide??? But no, we need a fucking evil russians!

I don't get how they are stereotypical. Because they speak Russian? Because they're bandits? It's not like they were drinking vodka while wrestling bears.

  • Yep that was really frakking stupid...

  • Yes, but I can live with that. Also putting "evil group" with mexicans or even black guys, wouldn't really help TTG sell more. But Russians...

  • I thought it was okay until the bald tatted up dude showed up.

    I was hoping for aliens
But, no! ;-; fucking evil Arvo and russians came. ( no hard feelings)

  • Because there are other nationalities besides American, believe it or not.

  • BUT in America during the Z.A. When you will only encounter a few people mostly Americans...it doesn't make sense

  • It doesn't feel out of place to me because I live around a lot of Russians. There are plenty of Russians in Massachusetts. This is America, we don't just have Mexican immigrants. I think it'd be stereotypical to have Mexicans. Also, this is Virginia, not California. Virginia would probably have Puerto Ricans because it's on the East Coast. I live in Mass. (another East Coast/Atlantic state), as I said, and our Hispanic population is majority Puerto Rican, not Mexican. I didn't mind that they were Russia. We've had a Belgian and an Indian in the game so far. We've had several Hispanic people too. Maybe they just wanted to introduce a new nationality. America is full of immigrants from everywhere. It doesn't matter where the bad guys were from. Someone was going to take offense. If they were Mexican bad guys, we'd have people complain about that. Telltale can't win on this one. Also, we're not even sure they're all bad. I think Arvo and his sister might be okay, judging by the translated dialogue. It's just those other guys who seem bad.

  • I noticed they were very stereotypical too... butch woman, man with big chin and tattooed head... I would have liked some more realistic characters but I'll take them for now as long as no one dies from them.

  • It's kind of dumb. As if call of duty and battlefield didn't have enough Russians trying to kill you now they're somehow in the continental US in the zombie apocalypse trying to kill you. I mean come on how original.

  • Seriously. They can't win for losing with people. Not all Russians are good. Not all Americans are good (as we have CLEARLY seen since day 1). Not all Mexicans are good. Not all black people are good. Get real everyone. It's not a big deal. Americans are consistently the bad guys in this game. So what if they chose a couple of Russian baddies? It's not a big deal. Political correctness run amok, yet again. My best friend is Russian and I'm pretty sure if I asked her, that she wouldn't give a rat's behind about a couple of Russian bad guys in a video game. Stop thinking of Cold War/post-Cold war politics when playing this game. This is a post-apocalyptic world. That stuff doesn't exist within TWD universe. Just enjoy it for what it is.

Yes, but I can live with that. Also putting "evil group" with mexicans or even black guys, wouldn't really help TTG sell more. But Russians...

  • You mean America, the land of immigrants? The group of people the Statue of Liberty represents?

You're right, it totally doesn't make sense.

  • Why not? So, the only people who survived the ZA in America are natural-born Americans? We've had a Belgian and an Indian so far and nobody said that they didn't make sense. I live in a state/town with a significant Russian population. I mean, they're right off the boat, still speaking Russian. They are great, hard-working people, like most immigrants. I think it's entirely plausible that some Russians would survive the ZA in America. Just because you don't live near a lot of Russian immigrants, doesn't mean they don't exist in this country.

  • I don't think it's out of place. I mean there are different races in America. They kinda reminded me of the bandits from season 1. The only difference is that they are Russian.
