Did they really need to be Russian?
This is kind of odd, but the thugs and Arvo being Russian really had no impact on the story whatsoever, you could of just replaced them with any American, or Mexican, or a mash up of a gang and the scenario would've played out the same, is Telltale trying to make some kind of political statement because of what's going on with the U.S and Russia right now?

I doubt that about the political statement. I think because Russia is a rare foreign language for an American in the South to hear so they wanted something unique.
I guess, but was a bald Russian thug with tattoos really necessary? That was a bit generic.
"Americans" can be Russians, Mexicans, or any other ethnic group.
I'm baffled as why so many people care about this.
I agree. I don't think there was any sort of statement. The foreign language might have been used to add tense moments when we couldn't understand what they were saying, especially during the ambush.
Definitely not a political statement. Russians being villains is a stereotype nowadays.
The thugs and Arvo didn't really need to be in the episode in the first place. There's enough drama in Episode 4 to begin with. Tossing in Arvo and his group at the last minute just clutters the story a little too much for my tastes.
It's not in any way a political statement. I guess they could have been speaking any foreign language, the important thing is that you don't know what they're saying when they're talking to each other (unless you can understand Russian). Even with subtitles on, there's no translation for that part - it's supposed to be alienating and a bit "holy sh!t I don't know exactly what's happening right now but this is really tense".
Well, @puzzlebox, no offense to you or any of your colleagues-developers, but Telltale did a bit shoddy work at portraying these Russians (except for Arvo, he was quite good).
I dont think the ethnicity of it matters at all. They could have been Mexican, Cuban, Indian or anything. The Zombie Apocalypse is world-wide and does not discriminate. America is the or one of the most diverse countries in the world so it's highly likely we would meet Russians or anyone else. In the end, it's not "Russians" we met, it's other people we met. Remember Carver was American and how he treated our group.
I could have done without "Russian bald guy with tattoos."
I was thinking wtf they can't be serious. Not only Russians but also those mobster tattoos? This would be the worst decision in the whole franchise.
There will be a plot twist about them. I am pretty sure.
"because of what's going on with the U.S and Russia"
The >US< and Russia? You must mean Ukraine and Russia, or pretty much any other country.
Also yeah. Whatever the staff says, they're just exploiting all the current national tension. They really could've been any nationality, but since Russians are the "bad guys" nowadays, they made them Russians. Or if not then this was a really tasteless and unthoughtful choice on Telltale's part, honestly.
He literally came on for two minutes, give it a break. What about the rest of us who think the Russians are a fresh change of pace?? If you've been paying attention across the games, comics, and tv shows, you'll see that most of the stories are (not implying that this is bad, but its necessary because of the zombie survival aspect) have to repeat and rehash many aspects. A gang of russians would be totally badass.
I kind of agree with that. Russians are villains on most modern FPS games, and a lot of other genres, it's already a cliché. Telltale had been doing a great job as a company that is creative and innovative in a time when the video game industry became conservative and boring, but this was definitely a strike out.
Well, there was also that Portuguese guy from 400 Days. Just like Arvo's group, it doesn't matter what language they spoke, it's just that the plot needed them to speak something other than English.
Good for you then.
I have a question. If you stay hidden during the time Argo walks up the stairs, doesn't he try to shove the bag of meds in the garbage? Maybe im just imagining things but I thought thats what I saw.
