About that character on the FENCE...

edited July 2014 in The Walking Dead

I'm sorry but that was a really lame way to present Nick's death. I'm not talking about how he died, but rather how it was presented. When Chuck died, there was at least more of a proper time to pause and reflect, and the music was more appropriate. But in Nick's case:

  • the music wasn't sad/somber at all, rather it was weirdly tense, which makes you not feel bad for his situation at all
  • unlike Chuck, we didn't get to see anything either heroic or otherwise that contributed to his death other than him getting nicked (heh) by a gunshot
  • being unable to kill him properly in one hit only makes the situation grosser, not sad... and in some cases almost laughable (so Clem can perfectly kill regular zombies but has to try three times to kill Nick stuck in a fence?)

It would have been much more effective to have found a dead/dying Nick along the way, rather than in the scene where we didn't have adequate time to say goodbye. Think how much sadder this scenario would've been:

Jane and Clem are on the road towards where Sarah and Luke are holed up. They notice a mass on the side of the road and cautiously approach it. It's Nick. He looks like he had been in a struggle and collapsed against a tree. His corpse's arm is cradling a now-festered gunshot wound. Around him are a couple of dead zombies... he clearly tried to lure them away from Sarah and Luke to attempt to fight them off and run for help, but succumbed to his wound in the process. (Notice in this scenario he's not as close to Luke/Sarah's bungalow so there's not some weird tense urgency yet to rush away from this scene)

He died trying to buy them more time, even when he knew he was injured. He died a hero.

Maybe as Clem examines him, he "awakens" slowly, like Duck was starting to... she can see his empty blue eyes start to focus and then gets the option of saying her goodbyes as she finishes him.

Bonus if you had given him back his watch would be that Clem would reluctantly take back the watch she had given him before, as a memento and remembrance of Nick.... possibly to give to Luke later on when they're back at camp, to allow him to grieve and talk about Nick more.

.... But how did he ACTUALLY die in the game? Looks like he got stuck against a wire fence, which means he either stupidly got himself trapped while he was alive and then got killed, or that he didn't even make it that far going for help before he was turned and then wandered into the fence.

I'm just really disappointed in how the whole thing was handled. I know he was a determinant, but his death could have at least reflected his attempt to fix his mistakes and do the right thing.

  • I wish he could have had a more heroic death too. Like maybe sacrificing himself to save Sarah in the mobile home and giving everyone enough time to get up onto the roof.

  • I think it would have been better to never find him. All you find his hat and a trail of blood near a zombie. When you get to the trailer, Luke says he went to find help and asks if you found him. Or maybe, if Telltale felt generous, Nick is with Clem, Rebecca and Jane at the begining, he says two lines, but gets separated (or just dies) after a zombie notices him. Or even just dying from a gunshot in the herd scene. ANYTHING would have been better than the awfully lazily scene we got. But please, just have people notice and grieve.

  • People might've said that's a little too similar to how Kenny could possibly "die" in S1 when he lifts Christa from the hole she falls in, but that still would've been preferable to what they ended up doing.

  • Yes, there were so many better ways they could have written his death scene. As soon as his hat fell off, I wanted an option to take it with us, or take the watch too since it was Pete's, and we couldn't keep our promise to him after all. I personally think they should've just had Nick live a bit longer before finally dying helping the group or something, like defending the perimeter with Luke, or had Luke be the one to put down walker Nick instead of Clementine, that would've been a great opportunity to make his death have an emotional impact, and wouldn't have given us more reason to be pissed off at Luke after this episode. Like seriously all that build up of their friendship for nothing. Nick deserved a much better death than getting shot in the shoulder and then getting stuck in a fence while running to get help, like wtf kind of death is that? For the cabin group member with the most development, he sure got the least interesting death, that's for sure.

  • We need someone from telltale staff to tell us why they killed him off like that.

  • Easy, they didn't want him anymore. Same thing with Sarah.

  • While I agree that his death is poorly handled and being heroic would've been great, this is a pretty realistic portrayal in a way. Most of the time, we want our favorite characters to do something heroic or something, but it's unlikely it'll happen.

  • "realistic" in a game with undead people though? And the ability to chop though people's skulls like cake? It's fiction, and I'd honestly rather be satisfied with something that's more heroic than realistic.... although you're right in that that's probably what their excuse was for doing it.

  • It's fiction, but it's grounded in reality. If the characters didn't feel real, we wouldn't really care.

  • Except he did die a heroic death. He was attempting to go get help while wounded from a gunshot.

Just because he died offscreen doesn't make his actions any less heroic.

  • even tho its a game and Robert Kirkman isn't as involved with it like he is with show and comic they still have the rules he set up. he has said that not all characters get heroic deaths. it depends on how important the character was in the story. that will determine how they die.

I got this in my thread about details we might not notice, but look at Nick's neck.

Please tell me they didn't just insinuate that he still gets bitten by a walker at his neck like if you let him die in episode 2.

  • I'm assuming after Nick was shot he ran to the trailer park and was panicking screaming for help after losing Luke and Sarah. Nick ran into the fence and got stuck and was bitten in the neck (or) Nick was shot lost Sarah and Luke than was bit in the Neck and got stuck in the fence and turned.

  • Agreed. I liked Nick, but that doesn't mean his death gets to have more meaning than anyone else's. He's just another guy, when it comes down to it. The world can often feel cruel and meaningless.
