Re-editing Nick's scene

edited July 2014 in The Walking Dead

Being dissatisfied with how NIck's death was presented, I thought I'd make a simple re-edit.
Nick Goodbye Re-edit

I didn't drastically change the scene but made these adjustments:

  • added more appropriate music

  • took out that removing-the-axe QTE that was a little too distracting

  • and adjusted the pacing a bit so that it looks like Clem is taking more time to process her feelings

A little better I think?

Comments

  • Just those tiny changes and its a lot better.

  • Yeah, cause they just like got over him like he was a random walker... Telltale just really HAD to kill so they gave him the most stupid death possible as well as Sarah. Like, every freaking scene there was an excuse to kill her or leave her behind (to get killed)

  • Damn, small changes make a big improvement.

  • Well what else did you expect them to say? She only knew him for like 8 days. "I'm sorry, Nick." was enough for me. The part I hated was that Luke knew him for 20 years and didn't say much.

  • Nick's death made me genuinely sad, especially after hitting him the first two times.

  • I thought this video would just be stupid and basically the same, but wow... That was emotional. Good job!

  • No offence to Telltale but, in my opinion that was better than the original.

  • That too, but okay you're not just gonna ignore a friend's death? Fine, it's the apocalypse and he makes really really poor choices and all that but I was really glad (I actually replayed the episode) to give him the watch. He was so happy.

He was never one to make good choices, I'll give you that. But still.. He's a person, not an animal (I left the fucking dog to die, what a fucker). You're not at the mall shopping for groceries or whatever you do (shopping, yeah). It was just sad doing the "OH, NICK - KILL HIM, OK - CHOMP - BYE"

I'm probably making a big deal of this but just trying to make a point, okay?
I'll probably the first one to tell you that I didn't like him... But hey... You gotta do what you gotta do.

And I really feel like in this episode they gave characters "cheap" deaths. Like they needed a freaking excuse to kill them. Did you know how many times did I freaking have to try to save Sarah's ass? Too many.

    So many excuses.

  • Where is the choice to head over to this place? Since apparently i haven't been there in the game, i haven't seen Nick.

  • Yeah, Clem fucked up. She always hit at first try now that she had to hit Nick (the character that doesn't wanna die because YOU save him from TellTales' first murdering attempt), she didn't do it good 'cause now they have to fuck him up for good. Same as they did for Sarah.

Fucked her up for good. Every freaking scene was a good excuse to kill her. Ok, I might've not liked her (since episode One, lol) and thought that she had to die but.. Not like that. Not like they just wanna get rid of characters because, ya know, we gotta do stuff and keep things going on just for the sake of doing 'em.

    Fuck that.

  • What... I liked him too. But saying goodbye was the only thing to do. I liked the scene, I liked the way it took his hat off for some reason. And that animal bit is kinda offensive. Treating a human better than an animal is kinda selfish. I don't really see what the dog has to do with Nick though. Meh... it did attack you so you have full right to self defence.

  • The QTE was there for a reason, son i'd leave it. The QTE served the purpose to mimic the scene in which Lee kills his brother in episode 1 using an axe (coincidence? i think not)

Also can we talk about how stupid his death should've been? He literally got stuck into a fence and bled to death from the bullet wound. There is no other way to decribe Nick's demise. Clumsy and stupid

  • He should be there when you go off to find Luke and Sarah. It's unavoidable if you saved Nick in episode two.

Ok, I didn't mean it like that for the animal thing. But since the bastard attacked me after I fed it and caused me a hell lot of trouble (I got locked up in the shed and nearly bitten by a walker and don't even get me started about getting my head shot off by Nick at first) I made sure to give it hell and let it suffer how I did (i could feel Clem's pain when she was sewing up herself, oh god)

WHAT I MEAN IS they just didn't give it much importance, is all.

  • I really liked the ending. I think in the original, where Jane just tosses Nick away like garbage, was so unemotional and stupid. I would have preferred the ending of this Video, and then, after the black out, it just cuts to the next scene.

And your scene was like 1.000.000× better than the original. Congrats

  • neither did I, lol, it's good to see I'm not alone

I don't think so. His lower legs had been bitten and he was munched in the throat too. I think he got attacked by walkers, maybe got away, then bleed out and died not long after and it was his walker that shuffled along for a bit before getting stuck in the fence. Luke said Nick went to get help, so obviously he didn't get far :(

Really nice video though, I like the music.

  • Yeah, you're right. I just realized he had been bit multiple times, so that explains it.

I'm not your "son" (nor am I a boy either)... interesting that it could be seen as a parallel to Lee's brother if that was actually the intention, but the situation itself is different (Clem and Nick aren't related, they don't have the same connection that siblings would've had) so I'm not really sure if that was that effective of an idea. Actually, if it wouldn't have looked so obvious I would've edited it so that Clem's final strike on Nicks skull was the only strike made. A concise strike like that would've been the most respectful way to finish him off.

  • Waaaay better.

  • Amazing what different music and just an ounce of extra screen time can do.

  • Actually "son" was a typo for "so". I forgot to correct it. But actually i think I'm going to leave it now

  • Way better, it would made his death a bit more bearable and less unsatisfying.
  • I'm shocked at how much a few little changes can make to the overall impact of the scene. As a Nick fan, I thank you. I feel like he got the send off he deserved now.

It probably helped that you didn't include the part where Jane starts talking weapons to Clem, all business, before pushing Nick's body out the way and how they walk past with, what seems like, little remorse. I understand why they were in a rush but it does cut into the emotional side of things.
  • Yeah, a lot of Jane's comments and reactions, while in character for her, were detrimental to the focus on Nick's death. With Clementine doing little to nothing in terms of reaction or dialogue, and Jane doing a majority of the talking, it makes it sound like Nick was nothing to the group, which wasn't the case (whether people liked his character or not).

  • Thank you for this. This was a lot better. It was very beautiful.

I hadn't realized Nick's death here was supposed to be a comparison to how Lee took out his brother in front of the pharmacy. Yeah, Nick and Clem weren't related like Lee and Bud were, but IMO he became like a brother to Clem back in EP 2, especially if you bond with him in the shack.

  • Anything would be better than the original.

No offence to Telltale but, in my opinion that was better than the original.
