Where would you rank TWDG in your top stories set in the zombie apocalypse?

Because I was just thinking about this, and I think the season 1 game is my personal favorite from any medium. Can't think of anything else with characters I got attached to as much as Lee and Clem. And how the interactivity of the medium was used was just brilliant.

Top 2 and 3 are Shaun of the Dead and Crossed, respectively.

I'm not much of a horror fan in the first place, so a horror comedy would rank high. Shaun wins almost by default. I guess there's Zombieland, but umm... no. Shaun pokes fun at zombie tropes without being seemingly smug about it. Are there other comedy movie/game/shows/books that are about are about a zombie apocalypse? There's Marvel Zombies by Kirkman and I guess a few prose novels (that I haven't read)?

Crossed, the first volume specifically, is a comic written by Garth Ennis and it's just straight up disgusting and disturbing shit (it gets even worse as the series goes on). Instead of mindless shambling undead, their zombies are still thinking, ultra sadistic, rapist, cannibals (think Reavers from Firefly). But even if things are so much worse for the survivors here, there are still heartwarming and even funny moments sprinkled here and there.

Honestly zombie fiction is a mess and it's usually done very sloppily so yeah, Telltale's The Walking Dead is in a high spot because it actually cared about narrative and characterization.

  • I'm not really a fan of zombie games or media in general, so yeah.

I honestly haven't seen any other zombie fiction besides the epic Mandroid app Zombies Run! I'd like to see some more, that comic link Pharmacy Rage looks good. I love writing fiction and I think I might some Walking Dead inspired fanfiction on the game and maybe the show. I just think for a zombie setting or walker, TWD has got everything perfect. They are really the monopoly when it comes to zombies.

The awesome trailer that promised greatness that the game wasn't even close on delivering. (By most accounts. I didn't play it myself.)

Still, the trailer is a pretty damn good short film in it's own right, and distills in less than 3 minutes most of what makes the zombie apocalypse a compelling subgenre genre of horror

  • I'm not saying that TLOU didn't have plotholes; but I definitely am saying that it has much less plot holes than TWDG does. People have survived drops much much larger than 20 feet (why did you say 50ft? He fell off the second floor) so it's not completely impossible that Joel managed to survive that. On top of that, it also depends on where you land that metal rod through your body. If vital organs are avoided then it won't kill you; at least not right away.

As for the slaughtering of thousands of people with ease, that is what you do in a shooter game. I take it you are not a big fan of the shooter genre then? Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed (kind of), Call of Duty, Bioshock, etc. When I look for plot holes I look for them in the story and not in the gameplay itself. Since TWDG is more story than game there are a lot more mistakes that could be done.

I'm going to list this off the top of my head so I don't think it will be a complete list but I'll do my best. I need to replay season 2 since it's been quite a while, so I'll probably edit and add more to it later. It's pretty much in chronological order. Can anyone think of anything I might've missed?

    1. Hershel's farm is nothing but fields beyond the fence that Shawn was repairing and yet some walkers managed to sneak up there out of sight quick enough to kill him.
    2. Lee doesn't take the pitchfork with him (as a weapon) that Hershel had in the barn even though he clearly heard screams of distress.
    3. Lee should have taken the option to kill the walkers rather than to just either drag Duck or Shawn out of harm's way. With them blocked by a fence it'd be the perfect opportunity to pick them off.
    4. In Lee's parents pharmacy why didn't he know the combination lock code to the front gate? Even if he was estranged with his family he could have tried to guess a birthday or something.
    5. In Lee's parents pharmacy, how did he not remember the alarm in the office? Furthermore, shouldn't he know the security code to disable it? Even if he was estranged with his family, I doubt they would've changed that after they left.
    6. Since Danny shot Jolene in the head, she shouldn't have turned into a zombie. So why didn't he go back and retrieve her corpse for the fresh meat they wanted to use for dinner? What was that they mentioned about being taught not to be wasteful?
    7. Mark would not have died from that arrow wound in his shoulder. The St. John's were a bit crazy but if they only kill people who were going to die anyway then Mark was not one of them.
    8. If the St. John's only kill people who were going to die anyway, why did they have altered bear traps? Contradictory morals.
    9. Why was no one freezing to death in that meat locker that they got locked in?
    10. Why is Danny immune to the taser?
    11. Why did legless Mark crawl back upstairs to die after he had already crawled downstairs? I'm talking about the scene where Brenda uses Katjaa as a hostage and keeps backing up the stairs to avoid Lee.
    12. If the St. John's needed Katjaa to save Maybelle, why are she and Duck not in the farm where the cow is giving birth and instead taken into the house to be separated?
    13. Why was there a set trap in the barn that Danny conveniently stumbles into?
    14. In the time that Brenda had her gun pointed at Lee, Katjaa could have smacked her hand upward so the gun would have gone off into the ceiling at which point Lee could have rushed to help with the struggle.
    15. How was Andy practically unphased from hitting the electric fence?
    16. Why did the bandits attack minutes after Lee takes the bag from the grate? Sometimes people are late to drop offs so did they decide not to wait and see what happens? Why not give Ben till the end of the day at least?
    17. How did Ben not notice the bandits sneaking up to the motel when he was sitting on top of the RV on watch?
    18. If you chose to save Doug he set up an alarm system. How did the bandits trip the alarm system and within one second managed to make it from the wire connected to the alarm, to opening the gates, sneaking in and taking everyone hostage. There should have been more time between the bell ringing and them forcing their way in.
    19. If you chose to save Doug and the alarm rings before the bandits come in. Why did no one in the group run to hide after hearing the bells?
    20. Duck getting bitten doesn't seem convincing to me. Didn't Katjaa fall on top of Duck and was shielding him?
    21. If the RV was working why didn't Kenny just push it forward, so Katjaa, Duck and Clem wouldn't have to wait for Lee's cover fire to get them to move? Why didn't he back it up so Ben and Doug could also make it inside without waiting for Lee's cover fire to get them to the RV?
    22. How the hell did Lily make it into the RV on time? The car moved out as soon as Lee stepped in and since she was upstairs it doesn't seem like she would've made it. Is she a faster sprinter than the fastest man alive?
    23. Why not mention that Duck is bit to the entire group? It wouldn't be like Ben and Carley or Doug to demand that he be put down. Lily might've held it over Kenny's head because of what happened with Larry but I doubt even she would've shot a kid. Even so, she could have easily been diffused by the others. The only reason I see that it wasn't mentioned was so that Lily would stay focused on threatening Ben which consequently ends with Carley's or Doug's death.
    24. If you took Lily with her, how did she get out of her binds?
    25. Why the hell would Kenny leave the RV keys inside of the RV with Lily still in there? Considering how possessive he is over his RV and later on boat, I would think that the keys would remain strictly in his pocket.
    26. What pushed the train off the tracks? You would think that it was these concrete "tires" surrounding the train cars on either side but there is no hill/mountainside that they could've rolled off of. Also, if the train was carrying those concrete "tires" the there should be at least one train car toward the front that isn't really a train car and is more of a loading deck.
      Alt text
    27. The way that the gas tanker fell out of the way of the train is convenient. At least a part of should've blocked the tracks if not swung toward the train and collided with it in the process of falling.
    28. Why did Clem keep the stranger on the radio a secret from Lee?
    29. Do people bury their pets with collars on? Especially an automatic one?
    30. Why was there a giant hole in the wall behind that placard in the sewer? How was the placard not damaged in the process?
    31. Vernon said that they were right beneath Crawford and yet they were actually right under the hospital which was quite a ways away from Crawford.
    32. How were there no zombies by the Motor Pool the second time that Lee went there? The door to the garage should've been slightly opened by that car jack and zombies should've been inside and outside of there.
    33. How did Lee get back after retrieving the tape from the doctor by the motor pool? The garage door was closed (with zombies definitely inside); the fence that he hopped had barbed wire on it, so the only other option would've been to go through the toppled fence where zombies were clearly pacing around outside.
    34. Why didn't the zombies bust through the doors as soon as Ben took the hatchet out from it?
    35. Clem was clever enough to keep the radio a secret but didn't actually bother to ask the stranger to speak to her parents?
    36. If Kenny was so concerned about someone stealing the boat why didn't he take the battery out when he went to help Lee look for Clem?
    37. If Kenny was so concerned about someone stealing the boat why not take the tires off of the towing harness (there must be a proper word for this?) and hide them? That way if anyone wanted to take it they'd have to drag it; and the scraping metal against the concrete would've attracted walkers from everywhere.
    38. How did Kenny make it out alive after locking himself out of an escape and staying to protect Ben?
    39. Why did the sign snap in half (more like 3/4ths and 1/4th) when Lee was crossing it to get to the Marsh house. Cities maintain things that could be liabilities so it shouldn't have rusted in the short time that it's been a zombie apocalypse. If anything, it would've come apart where it was secured against the wall.
    40. Why didn't Lee take the time to wrap some cloth around his hand before picking up the glass shard? Why purposefully injure himself since the smell of blood attracts walkers?
    41. Why does the stranger know about Lee choosing to save Doug because Carley would've died with Lee's secret? That happens in episode 1 and the stranger only has his things stolen at the end of episode 2 so he would only have really been told of things that happened at the farm and after.
    42. What kind of a range does that walkie talkie have on it? It wouldn't be military grade so I don't see how the stranger would've been able to keep in contact when Clem was on a fast train and he had to take the roads by car which don't appear to be anywhere near the train tracks.
    43. How did the stranger keep up with the speed of a train in his car? Was there seriously nothing blocking the road at all? No wrecks to block his path? It's not like he was driving on the rails behind them. He would've ended up being swallowed by that gigantic hoard had he did that.
    44. Why didn't Lee just change the channel of the walkie talkie? I doubt Clem would've had it memorized so her talking to the stranger and running away could've been avoided.
    45. Why not "lose" the walkie talkie during a supply run?
    46. The last time that Diana (Clem's mom) called she specifically said that she had to stay in the hospital because her husband got into some altercation with another person and he landed in the E.R. I am guessing that this altercation resulted in him being bitten. If they turned into zombies at the hospital, why the hell were they seen right outside The Marsh House?
    47. How did Christa survive birth? No, seriously. If even a bit of placenta is left inside an infection could occur and Christa should've died.
    48. Who helped deliver Christa's baby? There's no way she could've done it herself. There's also no way Clem would've been able to do it on her own. Did they meet another group? Why didn't Clem mention that she had experience with babies when Rebecca was giving birth?
    49. What kind of a doctor can't tell a canine bite from a human bite? Seriously, Carlos. The teeth marks are completely different. Did he get his certificate online or something?
    50. How was Luke able to keep up with a car (Carver's truck that everyone was imprisoned inside) by foot?
    51. Why are the Russians in the same exact place whether you choose to move out immediately or two days later? Don't tell me they were waiting outside by some off chance that that specific group would pass by through there?
    52. Clem, a tiny 11 year old kicking down a door to get inside the trailer that Luke and Sarah are holed up in. Not every adult could perform such a feat, so Clem being able to do this is a load of crap.

14 year old girl slaughtering hundreds is in the gameplay. The genre is a shooter game. This is just something that you have to deal with.

Like I said before, I'm not saying TLOU doesn't have plot holes. If she has no scratches then it was just Naughty Dog being lazy with adjusting the character rig.

A plot hole that really irked me with TLOU actually happens to be with the fuel use. Gasoline has an expiration date; and considering that it's been 20 or so years since the outbreak those cars and generators shouldn't be working perfectly if they should even be working at all.

Do you want to see eating on screen? Just because they don't show it doesn't mean they don't actually eat. They also don't show anyone going to take a dump in TLOU or TWDG but you know that it actually happens. Do you need to see the characters actually going to take a shit for it to not be a plot hole?

What my point was, that TWDG had far more plot holes in the story line than TLOU ever did which is why I consider it to be better. If you want to see all the plot holes that I've listed you can just check out my reply to @xChryst.

Yeah, sure, every person that doesn't consider TWD the #1 gets disliked.

(#)1 for zombie game for me is the Resident Evil series, which along with Metal Gear Solid was my introduction to gaming.

(#)1 post apocalyptic would be the Fallout series, everything is SO well made, learning about the lore is like studying another world's history.

TWDG S1 is not far behind, since there aren't much stories this deep and good nowadays, Season 2 I consider to be much worse, I find it to be very predictable, having 0 impact, and having an 11 year old doing the things she does in this game I find it to be not realistic or socially possible at all. Also, the game is not decision driven, it's a lie, and when this is combined with the previous things it creates a feeling of dissapointment.

No offense intended, and I appreciate the effort to post all that, but I stopped reading after the first few example., I'll hazard a guess that the rest of them are more or less in the same vein. These aren't really plot holes. Stuff that merely raises questions or sub optimal decisions made by characters aren't necessarily plot holes. Plot holes are reality bending inconsistencies or paradoxes that defy explanation.

I'm going to list this off the top of my head so I don't think it will be a complete list but I'll do my best. I need to replay season 2 sin

  • I was referring to when Joel fell down the elevator shaft. No, I am, I just don't pay as much attention to story in them, when I want a shooter I look for good gameplay. I've never played Tomb Raider or Uncharted, I hate COD, but I have AC2 and Infinite, both good games. And I never said I didn't like TLOU, I bought a PS3 just to play it, I'm just focusing on the negatives like you did with TWD ;). The rod was through his stomach I think and even if it wasn't it was patched with duct tape and a T-shirt. And just a tip, you'll enjoy games a lot more if you don't look for every little flaw, and if you do notice one, just ignore it.

Sorry TLOU fans but I'm a TWDG fan :p

  • No offense, but I just have to prove some of these wrong.
    1. He was too busy screaming in pain due to the tractor on his leg
    2. It was very early into the apocalypse, he wasn't an experienced survivor from the start
    3. Pick them off with? Even if he was armed, getting everyone out of harms way should always be your first priority
4-5. I don't know the code for the alarm in my house, or the garage door
    6. "If you kill me, the meat gets tainted"-Danny St. John
    7. It's called an excuse, just sayin'
    8. Trying to justify their actions by lying
    9. I'm pretty sure you can change the temperature in those things, and the St. Johns wanted 'em alive
    10. Why was Ellie immune to the pipe?
    11. They carried him back up so he wouldn't crawl away
    12. They wanted to separate them from the rest of the group
    13. He set it thinking they might escape and he stumbled into it in pain
    14. She was probably too afraid to move
    15. It was off
    16. Some people are very impatient
    17. Because he's Ben, and he probably thought they were picking up the meds if he did see them
18-19. The alarm warned them about people coming from the road, the bandits came from the woods
    20. She fell next to him
    21. If I'm not mistaken he was trying to get it started
    22. It wasn't that far, she would have made it without the adrenaline rush
    23. They were already in a bad mood, it wasn't the right time
    24. She was ex-military, I'm sure part of her training was how to escape make-shift bindings
    25. Kenny doesn't think things through sometimes, people screw up
I'm getting really bored of typing this so I'll just do the last 5
    48. Maybe we'll find out eventually, it's an unanswered question, just like Christa's fate
    49. I got nothin'
    50. He didn't, the truck got there in maybe an hour or two, it took Luke a full day of nonstop walking
    51. It's probably their territory, they saw them coming and got into position
    52. It was a cheap-ass wood door in an abandoned motor park, and adrenaline works miracles, one woman lifted a car off her husband

I'm going to list this off the top of my head so I don't think it will be a complete list but I'll do my best. I need to replay season 2 sin
