Christa is the single most important character in Clem's development.

edited August 2014 in The Walking Dead

She raised Clem the longest, and taught her how to survive. She is probably the most rational and handles her emotions well. Clem might care for Lee more, but she probably wouldn't be alive if it weren't for Christa.

Clem would have died if Lee didn't find her at her treehouse, and Lee taught her how to survive.

  • I get that, but Christa and Clem have been through much more, and Clem is a much hardened survivor because of Christa.

Every character gives and takes a little. It's what shapes and changes the story.

  • Lee taught Clem how to survive, Christa was there as a caretaker whenever Lee died. So she has some importance. Clem might not have made it on her own if Omid and Christa hadn't been there.

  • Clem became hardened because of Lee's efforts, and her past. Imagine all the devastating moments she went through to get to where she is right now. She heard the gunshot to kill her friend Duck, Carley die right in front of her, Larry's head squashed by a salt lick, witnessed her parents as walkers in Savannah, and finally found the inner spirit to finish off Lee, and prevent him from reanimated, thus Lee's wish. Because of all these moments, she realized that Lee was trying to make her suitable and adapt to the new world, and survive, by teaching her the survival skills. Lee was like a father to her, and Clem was like his daughter. If it wasn't for Lee, Clem wouldn't have what it takes to live in the new world, and if it wasn't for him, Clem probably wouldn't have made it out of Savannah or found Omid and Christa. What i'm saying is Christa was important, yes. But she acted as a caretaker, rather than Lee who resembled more as a father figure, and survivor.

  • Very well said!

  • The thing is, no one is going to really agree with you because you know what Telltale did?

They invested 5 huge episodes in Lee and Clem's relationship showing how they bonded and cared for one another and how Clem learned from Lee, and then they showed Clementine in Season 2 being able to talk/reference Lee nearly every episode. 3 months.

Christa has been with Clementine for nearly 2 years, given how long her Pregnancy may've taken to develop from the end of Season 1, to becoming bloated with her child at the start of Season 2. But we have no context. Absolutely nothing. Christa taught Clem how to stitch a wound. She didn't survive cannibals, the drug store, the raid of the motel. They didn't even interact at Crawford. And the fact Clementine barely can mention Christa? Is kind of telling how much Christa cared about her.

    Sucks, but true.

  • so you are saying clementine doesnt care about christa much?

I think this was also lost opportunity for Telltale, in terms of defining Christa's and Clementine's relationship after Omid died and the baby was "gone"..

  • That's more a logical failure on the writers' part. They banked on the players' memories of Lee and Clem, rather than actually bothering to slowly provide details about what Clem's relationship with Christa was like. All we know is that, however miserable and resentful Christa was about Clem, she was still willing to lie to protect her.

I hope Episode 5 will resolve the mystery behind what went down between the two, just as the last episode of the first season allowed players the option to finally find out WHY Lee's wife cheated on him.

  • Christa may have been with her for 16 months but people can connect better with Lee because Clems and Lees relationship and character growth was shown on screen.

  • i know this has noting to do with this but how do i start a discussion?

You know that thing really bothers me. I told this in my "4 Months VS. 2 Years" discussion as well: Lee and Clementine spend hardly 4 months together. And Clementine and Christa spend 24 months together. (8 Months with Omid AND Christa, 16 months with Christa.) Actually that makes "Season One" kinda pointless if you compare the times. Why the hell didn't they let us play as Christa from the very beginning if she's gonna spend so much time with Clementine in the ZA? "It's not the amount of time but the quality of time that matters." I know but arghhhh... I wish Lee and Clem spend at least 6 months together. Thank you so much Telltale. You destroyed all of my efforts I put for Clementine using that timeskip bullshit. sigh

Well, no. If Christa's importance is defined by her relevance to Clem, then that makes Clem the most important character in the series. Which I think everybody pretty much agrees on.

Also, if we're going to be ranking characters solely by their contribution to Clem's development, then the list probably goes:

    1. Her parents (Raised her from birth to have good sense and morality)

    2. Lee (Took care of her and gave her guidance during the early formative months of the apocalypse)

    3. Christa (Picked up where Lee left off and helped to shape Clem further into a survivor)

    4. Chuck (Is the reason Lee tells Clem to keep her hair is short and taught her how to shoot a gun)

  • I wouldn't agree she's the most important character of the series. Even if Christa blamed Clem for Omid's death, she was still shown taking care of her and she risked a lot to protect her in scavenger's situation. But what annoys me is that in episode 1 and 2 we had opportunity to mention Christa a few times in both episodes. We could repeat that we want to find Christa or at least mention her in the other context. But episodes 3 and 4 came and Christa suddenly stopped to exist like she never even existed in the first place. My Clem was saying she wants to find Christa on every given occasion but suddenly I can't even say anything about her because Telltale is ignoring her. I hope this is done just to make some people forget about Christa to have bigger shock when she returns in the finale, but I have a bad feeling about this.
