Get rid of the 'Downvote' option

  • That's why I think just removing anonymity would be a great compromise. I think we should keep the downvote feature. Disqus (a commenting system used on many online newspapers/magazines/etc.) got rid of their downvoting feature and it kind of sucked. Retain the downvote feature, yet remove anonymity. It would remove the cowardly compulsion of incessant anonymous troll downvoters who downvote very neutral posts, yet allow people who disagree to express their disagreement.

You don't need a reason or to state why you disagree about something, sometimes we disagree about things for absolutely no reason, I think a dislike would be better than someone commenting - "I disagree with you because I just do".

  • Yeah, I agree. Sorry if I'm being too frank, but think about what kind of simpleton gets off on spam downvoting people just for the sake of trying to be offensive? It's the most feeble, cowardly form of trolling there is. I think that some of these people have a bunch of dummy accounts. How much time did it take them to do all that? I would lose interest immediately. WAY too much trouble. I understand if you legitimately disagree with what's being said and downvoting people occasionally, but most of these maroons are just downvoting because they think they're in on some big joke, when in fact THEY are the joke. They have that much time on their hands? Are they so lacking in social skills that they have to get their childish angst satisfied in the stupidest way possible? Really? Downvotes? Do they really think they're hurting people's feelings? How old do you have to be to think that a downvote is some kind of crazy jab to take at someone? You'd have to be a child and be pretty new to the interwebz. It's funny, but a little bit sad too. Let's just all be grateful that most of us have more fulfilling lives and that we have the nerve to tell people when we disagree with them. We don't need to hide, afraid of what people might think if they knew who we really were. When I need a laugh, I normally do it with other human beings, you know, like family and friends. I don't sit all alone on my computer downvoting people, mouth-breathing and snickering to myself. Although, admittedly, I am snickering as I'm writing this, but at least I have the nerve to admit it (and I'm not mouth-breathing). Lol. ;-)

The down vote button is misused and in my opinion, pointless ---

Once you admit that it's pointless, then nothing should really matter. I couldn't care less how people 'vote' anonymously anyway. It's silly that anyone would. But if that's such a huge concern in your life, I'm sorry... or envious. I'm not sure which.

EDIT: If stating my opinion gets a rise out of users then you are correct. I don't check the forums hourly like some people. I'll state my opinion and move on... I have other things to accomplish then winning 'internet wars' or whatever they do here.

    Clearly you didn't understand me.

The down vote button is so misused that it's original reason is gone, therefore it has become pointless and in my opinion should be removed. Once again never said its pointless in the sense that it I don't care about it.

And its success will be determined by the ability of the people here not to read too much into each name, but it is an alternative.

  • Actually, the dislike button is for when you disagree with someone's opinion, not because someone is 'wrong' or trolling. But I agree that the dislike button should disappear, because I can't stand seeing some blockhead posting "lul dislike trolle XDDDD" every time someone dislikes one of his retarded comments.

Just as a response to everyone who was asking the mods about this, moderators are just volunteers who stick around to keep order on the forums - we are not Telltale staff, nor are we involved with Web Development, so we can't do anything ourselves about removing down votes, making Telltale Talk more prominent, etc.

However, as your screenshot above shows, Telltale's community manager @Puzzlebox did recently talk about the possibility of removing down votes, so hopefully something comes out of that. I agree that if nothing else, showing at least who down votes something would be an... interesting scenario to watch unfold.

  • Alright, but you are saying that its removal would restrict your opinions. It does not. I think, however that really asking ourselves the why, even if we do not post a response is healthy. Reading into someone's comment, or even when listening to people in real life, it is easy to dismiss and give no thought to what people are actually saying.

  • You can move it now, it had its moment of fame.

I'll let it stay here for more visibility for a while, I suppose.

Oh sorry, I didn't know that existed. Can I move it? or do I have to wait for a mod.

  • Mods aren't responsible for the website features, board placement, etc. We are just volunteers (who previously used the board like you did) who were picked out from other volunteer mods/Telltale staff to be asked to keep order on the boards.

I agree that Telltale Talk definitely needs some more prominent placement, but sadly our hands are tied. Talking to Telltale Staff about this might help - for instance, bringing this up to @Puzzlebox could help.

    * I've been trying to get telltale staff to take notice and convince them to move the telltaletalk section somewhere people will see it more but I don't think its working. EDIT: fixed it.

  • Why not have two sides of the forum? The General Discussion which is everything Walking Dead related and another Discussion that isn't twd related so these threads, leaving threads, fanfictions etc. Then there aren't all these sub sections that are a 'graveyards'

  • Honestly, (this is a little hypocritical possibly) but it seems a little childish to start a flame war because someone downvotes you. I dont like when i get downvoted but thats because i don't like how the person doesn't explain themselves. If we saw who downvoted and who liked it would be really interesting and i think it would lower the amount of downvoting.

  • Those are my thoughts, but who knows? Maybe I'm underestimating the foru-community.

Some of the other volunteer mods and I have also been asking for some better visibility for the boards as well. The current forums use a modified version of a fairly new forum software, but the previous forum software displayed only the board names (with sub forums such as Forum games) and the latest post, which made things much easier to see.

Again, things ultimately depend on how Telltale responds. Outside of having more direct access to Telltale staff via a mod board and a few other ways to contact them, we really don't have that much more of an influence or a say than you guys do (although we do get to suggest some features to make modding easier for us, which is nice).

  • Normally I would agree, but at this point, people abuse the anonymity and use alternate accounts (or even anonymously down vote from their main account) just to get a reaction out of people solely because they can.

  • It's much more simple to give a simple dislike than to explain all the reasons why you dislike it. You have your opinions and I have mine, it doesn't mean either of us are right on this topic, it's different for each person. Also, you have a higher chance of making someone mad, sad or maybe even happy if you leave a comment, but this doesn't mean we should be restricted to giving our opinions through comments instead of expressing our opinions with a simple click.

Thread: Telltale should take away the down votes!

Telltale should take away the down votes! I think it gives trolls an easy tool. If you like something up vote it. if not, don't vote at all ~jmo :)

  • Why do people care about dislikes though? It seems pretty easy to just ignore them...

  • I agree completely!

  • edited August 2014

I figure why? TROLLS use it more.

  • Agreed! I wish they would actually do this.

  • edited August 2014

If they take away downvotes, they should also take away upvotes with it. It would make sense- why get rid of one and keep the other?

  • Downvotes are necessary

Hmm, funny you should say that. You might get your wish sooner than later.

  • edited August 2014

Puzzlebox from Telltale staff mentioned that they were looking into it.

  • Most trolls are lazy. if they have to show themselves or write something, some might be turned away! but if they can anonymously just push a down vote button even if you say "I like The Walking dead" then i think it's useless! if you don't agree with a post then say "i don't agree" then explain like a normal human. that's what the discussion is for...right
