That excuse has always bugged me. The car was obviously a partial bad idea (unless you intended to steal-- then it was a great idea) if only because the headlights and all were still on. Almost everyone in their life time has seen what happens to a car when you leave the lights on for a few hours; the battery dies. And that's in a relatively short amount of time; we're talking six hours or less.
It always amazed me that they tried to claim it was abandoned with both supplies in tow and lights still on. If they had come up to it with everything shut off then maybe...

If a survivor left his supplies alone for whatever reason and did not return almost inmediately, there´s usually only one logical conclusion: they got eaten by walkers. So, yes, they were pretty certain it was abandoned. Everyone expect Clem and Lee(determinantly). Besides, you know, they were starving. Is hardly a good action but I found it very plausible.
