I was also wondering that too lol. I was playing mass effect one day and I was like....wait a minute why do all the aliens speak English xD. I don't think they are actually speaking english. I think everyone can understand each other because of some kind of omni tool technology or something.

These's also a brief reference when you romance Thane. When he starts calling you Siha, Shepard can question him and say, "I think my translator just messed up, what did you say?"

Just started playing it yesterday. And I am absolutely LOVING it! I'm up to the Citadel and trying to track down Saren. I convinced the Council that he is a rogue Spectre, that took a lil while to do.
The game is just so massive in scale and there is lots to learn about the many characters, etc. I got a bit lost for a while lol
OMG I'm so glad you like it! One of the most important pieces of advice I can give you is take every chance you can to explore other worlds outside from the main quests.
If you can land on a planet, go to it and beat some space pirates/bandits, because you need every bit of loot and exp that you can get in ME1. It pays over all the way until ME3 and a lot in ME 2 for certain decisions.

Yeah I have seen some side quests that involve going to other systems. I will definitely do those at some stage.

Heres my advice...In ME2 do every loyalty mission...Pass them all before the last mission.

It's a great game. I'm glad you're loving it, It gets a little tedious at times exploring all the planet's, but it is definitely worth it.
In ME1 finish the side missions before you finish the game, In ME1 there is no after game. ME2 and ME3 have them though.
And buy all the upgrades for the ship before the last mission.
