The big elephant in the room
How did the militaries in the world get overrun? It really should have been very easy for them to mow down the undead.
I haven't read the comics and I'm just starting to watch the TV series, so I was curious if this was answered anywhere.

In reality they would have probably fucked off. First they save all the high priority people like high end surgeons and people in power. Then when they have it under control they might come back for the rest.
No one had the fucking idea to shoot the head to kill them.
And yeah, charging your vehicle into a horde of undead is an irrational thing to do.
Seriously?
Shooting the enemy in the head is the default (unless you want to capture them alive), regardless of whether or or not they are undead.
The world has trillions of rounds of ammunition, tens (hundreds?) of thousands of aircraft, and hundreds of thousands of tanks.
EDIT: I couldn't make out if you were being sarcastic :P
It spreads incredibly easily. You don't have to be bitten to become a walker (revealed by Ben in Starved for Help). All it takes is one person to kill themselves in a highly secluded area where thousands of people are gathering and from there a potential outbreak can occur. We see this in Crawford when Anna Correa stabs Dr. Logan, he presumably dies and that is what causes the desecration of Crawford. It came from the inside and it's hard to contain once it spreads.
They dont really have any crowd control equipment for that purpose. But yeah, there just so many guns and bullets.Tanks could just drive in the streets and mush them anyway. But by default, army does nothing in za. If the zombies are fast as fuck, then i can understand if army cant deal with it, but as slow as in walking dead? nah, should be easy to control that.
I assume a lot of military people would abandon the military and try to find family or loved ones and those who don't would have possibly fallen to suicides or natural deaths behind quarantine lines as mentioned above before they realised that you don't have to be bitten to turn. The rest were probably overrun or in a bunker with the prez
The military wouldn't have been wiped out so easily. It would have been more like TLOU.
who me?
I'm sorry that I brought an elephant, it just wouldn't stop following me.
I believe it was implied in the comics and described in the television series, that the military had a plan of creating "safe-zones". In TLoU the disease takes two days to kill someone, and they show symptoms so it would have been incredibly easy to pinpoint somebody and kill them before they infect others. It was just humans and greed, that wiped out some of the safe-zones.
In The Walking Dead, anybody can take a few mere seconds, to idle minutes, to long hours, to days to turn. There is no predictability to when somebody could turn. The military (and pretty much no one) didn't know this, so when they created these pockets of "safety" in Atlanta, New York, LA, any major city. Someone probably died, committed suicide, anything. When one person turns, other people die. They turn more people die. Since the military trapped themselves in, they couldn't get out.
Any other soldiers, military commanders, just had to survive with no commanding force. The military was separated with no lines of communication and little to no commanding officers. So they had to survive and without a government or organisation. They either became one of the survivors or were wiped out.
Is not the elephant in the room how electricity and electronics cease to function even in the beginning, outside of the answering machine at Clem's house? It still seems implausible if the epidemic did start in 2003.
Agreed, but how could those non-intelligent, slow-moving walking corpses take over military bases?
Thanks! That seems sufficiently plausible.
Well, that could have been a local power outage due to a walker incident. It doesn't have to have occurred worldwide that fast. The answering machine could have been on UPS.
They could have turned in a lot of ways, and for the sake of the plot there was no military.
That's a Big Bad Elephant
Perhaps military bases ended up being destroyed from the inside out, maybe it was exactly something like Crawford. I find it a little unlikely but there's no other explanation that would make sense, I don't think.
...>:D
Yeah, they could have at least had the epidemic occur during a world war that decimated the militaries of the world.
If there was a worldwide nuclear holocaust, that could have tremendously weakened human civilization, as well as created a huge seed of undead that outnumbered humans who were already struggling to survive the nuclear holocaust and couldn't focus on the undead.
They could have even made the undeath virus a biological weapon.
That's how I'd have handled it.
It's been brought up before. The idea that shambling corpses could bring down the entirety of the police and military is just something you have to suspend your disbelief about for the story to work.
Either the armed forces of the world were specifically targeted first, or they were all on lunch break when the virus hit.
honestly its not really that hard to wrap your mind around. in the walking dead, zombie lore does not exist so when the outbreak hit that means that there was mass hysteria even among the military because nobody knew about head or nothing, nobody knew that bites would turn you, nobody knew that you would turn weather you were bitten or not. add all these factors together and you can assume there was a panic and under those circumstances i could definitely see even the strongest military bases falling very quickly.
A lot of things, the military is still active and trying to contain it but theyre so small now its difficult.
Your post was too smart person like for me to understand it. But yeah, maybe the military could have done more.
This is why in every zombie story ever told ever it starts when the outbreak is already past the point of no return.
IRL what would more likely happen is one person turns, and let's say that person tries to eat you. Well, you not being a completely worthless excuse for a human being kills the zombie and prevents the zombie outbreak. Then the people that saw you do it would be all like "HEY, YOU JUST KILLED THAT GUY!" and you'd be put away for murder.
lol
