Do you believe games with compelling storytelling will eventually die out?

edited October 2014 in The Walking Dead

Sadly these days I have been finding games less interesting unfortunately. I feel like a lot of games cater to the mainstream audience of gamers that just want to shoot and blow things up. But what about the rest of us? What about the people that want a game that can tell a good story? a game they can invest their time and emotion into? I can say that memorable games like this are becoming much more rare these days... I could be wrong but it looks like there are only a few Game Companies actually making games with good storytelling...

Many Gaming companies today are just in it for the money. They pump out these rubbish games that are the same crap every year.. It will be a sad day when Telltale stops making The Walking Dead ..

I swear if I have a kid in the future that wants to buy the filth future gaming companies pump out.. I will just whip out The Walking Dead Game Season One and Two and be like "son... let me show you a real fucking game"

Telltales The Walking Dead has been the only game series to ever make me cry, And It will probably be the last game to ever make me cry as I am slowly stopping playing games now.

So what I advice you all to do... Is listen to this track and be glad you were around in the right time to play this game.

Comment below what was the last game that made you cry or tear up?

Personally I think The Walking Dead's story is as good as they get, Nothing will be able to top this story in a long time. I think some games can still produce great stories... But not on the level of TWD.

Personally, I wouldn't say games with a story as their focus are finished. Look at TTG's games. Look at Valiant Hearts: The Great War, or even TLOU... It's just unfortunate that a lot of Game dev's cater too much now to the casual/ mainstream gamer...

  • Good point, but you have to agree that there has been been a marked decline in story driven games, with focus shifting on action.

But i really don't think that games will less and less be story driven.

With more powerfull consoles and PC's the games should become better and better (think about it ,a SP game on a 8 gb memory console compaired to the 512 mb memory in the ps3 and 360)

There will be more multiplayer only games some storydriven and some are just about gameplay.

    I prefer storydriven games...

I am talking games that can win game of the year just for the story The Walking Dead game did it. I mean Look at the 2013 GOTY.. It should of Clearly been The Last Of Us as it had already won awards elsewhere and had many nominations.... But they still chose GTAV as it is mainstream mindless violence. Dont get me wrong I played GTAV, but later sold it.

Destiny obviously is no where near as good as the storytelling of TWD. I am not talking about graphics, I am talking about plots and stories within games that just seem poorly written, I can literally predict whats going to happen in every game I play its rather annoying.

  • Yeah, people are more obsessed with graphics and performance rather than story and emotional attachment. Hell TWD S1e5 was the first time I bawled my eyes out over a video game, and I'm a grown man.

    Yeah true .

GTA5 was overhyped , it was fun, sure.

But i had way more fun with TLOU which i completed 4 times

Its all "follow the majority beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh(sheep)"

I don't even want to start about COD

But seriously, last CoD game I played was the first Modern Warfare one I think, for about 30 minutes....

  • That all depends on where you look. Personally, I think the rate of story driven games is the same, but then again, I mainly play RPGs (WRPGs and JRPGs), Visual Novels, and Action Adventures with decent to great story telling. So I can't say I've noticed a decline, but I certainly don't believe games with compelling story-lines are dying out since there exists video game genres that revolve specifically around telling stories.

  • Because you need to turn away from money-making games, highly praised and giving shitty content in return. There's a lot of games I enjoyed almost as much as TWDG.

  • Im done on COD... never again... Come to think of it the only game I played properly this year has been Watch Dogs... which was overhyped as hell and Aiden lacked depth and was rather monotone... Oh hell who am I kidding... nothing is going to surpass TWDG for a long time imo.

The Last of Us did win 2013 GOTY. It won more GOTY awards than GTA V. The Last of Us was pretty much the "official game of the year" in 2013.

Witcher 1/2, Bioshock Infinite, Metro 2033/Last Light, The Stanley Parable, Lone Survivor, Knock Knock, Dishonored, Fahrenheit, Deadlight, I Am Alive, Alan Wake, Dear Esther, Brothers:The Tale of Two Sons, I Have No Mouth But Must Scream, Limbo.... and many more, more or less recognizable, but all worth playing.

Not as long as there are fans like us. I'm not really a fan of games that don't have an appealing storyline.

  • Brothers:The Tale of Two Sons? Maybe. I used to play it with my younger brother who died when he was 8. This game remind me of him a lot.

About Fahrenheit, a remake isn't necessary for me, I'm okay with the way this game is.

No, I think there will be more.

I've studied and worked within the game industry for about 5 years now, if there is anything I've picked up it is that the notion of storytelling in games aren't taken as a secondary ingredient anymore, at least in the Scandinavian and British indie scenes.

As smaller companies can afford to release the games they want through crowdfunding I'm guessing that we will see an increase in story based games. My own hope is certainly to work on one such project.

Why? I mean, I like the game too, but after Lucas is killed and resurrected the game quickly goes downhill. Personally, I could like to see what the game could have be if they didn´t have to rush it.

Well, Carla believes what Lucas says just like that, Lucas and Carla suddenly want to be together and fuck despite technically behind at each other´s throats until now, Tyler disappears out of the story, Lucas gains superpowers and the homeless man that you see a few times turns up to be the leader of a group of homeless people. Is kind of... too much, too soon. There is no proper build up to that, in my opinion.

  • What? If anything the story-driven game is expanding now more than ever. People are becoming tired of the standard shootbang FPS formula and are starting to value story a lot more. A huge part of the reason why Destiny was panned despite having good gameplay mechanics was precisely because the story element was so weak (or non-existent).

  • Yeah, it could be improved like you said, but I don't expect it to happen anytime soon. Like there is not enough interest in Fahrenheit today.

You have a good reason for Brothers and maybe i will start it up again soon to give it a chance

Fahrenheit was incredible foggy i want a ps4/one/pc version that still is Fahrenheit

I think games, like most literature, will have certain periods where most of the games focus during that time is different.

There are many movements in literature that took place over time. Romantic, Dark Romantic, Naturalist, Realist, etc. I think video games will take a similar course throughout generations.

Video games are still pretty new, remember. Literature has been around for thousands of years, video games have only been here a couple decades, so naturally literature will have more organized movements throughout time. I still think Video games will take certain courses of action and focus but right now it's all kinda clumped.

first person shooters are dying. they are hanging on with an each on their life. if you look around you'll see that story driven games are becoming very popular. thanks to telltalegames and some other companies people are realizing the storytelling capabilities of video games. so no I don't think compelling storytelling is dying I think its just getting started.

  • I hope not. I find games that get you really liking the story being the best. Bioshock infinite was a nice blend of Action and great story telling

  • Nah. Medium weird or extreme weird?

    Heard of Catherine?

  • Nah. I've been gaming a long time and it's always been about like this. You have globs of games with no story, some mostly care about presentation and some mostly care about gameplay, and then you have occasional gems that nail it with a great story.

It's been that way for as long as I can remember. TWD just stands out because it's as good as they come, in terms of story driven games.

  • Its a mix honestly, it deals with relationships and such But the gameplay focuses on climbing a tower in nightmares, while it asks you EXTREMELY sexual questions that you must answer.

  • Nah you just have to find certain games like for me the Drakengard and NieR series are phenomenal story games although mildly repetitive mechanics when it comes to fighting lol, also Bravely Default. Also I don't know if you could call dark souls a storytelling game but that is awesome as well!
