Most Underrated Movies

There has been a lot of talk about movies; but what are some of the movies that are excellent, but never got the sort of popularity they deserved.

Here are a few of mine:

The Machinist - Christian Bale plays an insomniac anorexic who works in a machine shop and meets a colleague who he's never scene before and who nobody else seems to know. Plus, Christian Bale lost a shit ton of weight for the role (going down to around 55kg, and he's pretty tall), and then he had to put on massive weight quickly to shoot Batman:

Strange Days - Set in a cyberpunk, decaying Los Angeles (as opposed to the real, decaying Los Angeles), Ralph Fiennes plays a dealer illegal disks of recorded memories, allowing people wearing a device to experience those memories firsthand. After breaking up with his girlfriend, Faith, somebody gives him a recording of Faith's friend being killed. He then tries to solve the murder and protect Faith.

One Hour Photo - One of Robin Williams's dramatic roles, he plays a photo technician who is incredibly lonely and depressed. He fixates on a family who frequents his store, who he idealizes as the perfect family he doesn't have. However, there is a line too often blurred between admiration and obsession. The trailer here plays up the creep factor (which is probably why the movie didn't catch on). What's really compelling isn't the thriller aspect (which is actually pretty weak) but Robin Williams's portrayal of extreme loneliness. It's basically a drama bookended by a thriller, the latter of which does little more than set the premise for the drama.

This movie almost destroyed me. Seriously, I left the theater crying, and stayed in the bathtub for 2 damn hours crying when I got home. I was not ok lol. I don't even know if I could watch it more than once, it had that much of an impact on me.

    Young Guns.

Arguably one of the best portrayals of Billy the Kid I've ever seen, I don't hear enough about this movie nowadays. Overall an amazing cast, and the introduction scene of these characters is one of the best, you immediately know their personalities just by their expressions.(see below)

    End of Watch.

It was directed by the same man who directed Fury. Great visuals, interesting camera angles, strong cast, a well balanced blend of action, drama, and comedy. I thought this movie was amazing. I wish it got more praise.

There's probably a lot more, but this is all I can think of at the moment.

  • Most definitely agree with Dredd and The Iron Giant. :)

  • Edge of Tomorrow is underrated? From what I understood when I saw the movie, I thought it was solid among everyone.

  • The Grey!!!

  • The Prestige usually comes to mind.

  • Yeah but thats what made it great for me, it was made up from the BEST bits and pieces of similiar movies. It wasnt a completely new concept, but what it did it did brilliantly at least in my opinion.
