Simple question, everyone has different opinions on the definition of a alcoholic.
Personally i believe the definition of a alcoholic is someone that has physical dependance on it.
Is it wrong to get drunk on a Friday Afternoon when you have nothing in particular to do?
I don't think so.

I think if you have to ask, well...
It's often hard for the person to tell whether or not they actually have a physical dependence on alcohol, so it's better to depend on behavioral cues to let you know about such things. Getting drunk alone because you're bored seems pretty symptomatic of alcoholism to me.
I was just starting conversation Geez.
Everyone is a rehab councilor
Somebody who is drunk 99% of the time and can't take responsibility.
I don't care if people get drunk on weekends or whenever, but if they're always drunk and are irresponsible, I consider that an alcoholic. Basically if someone is dependent on it.
Edit: Forgot the rest of my comment. Thanks brain.
What do you mean by physical dependence? As opposed to what other dependence?
Anyway, I would define an alcoholic as someone who is addicted to drinking alcohol, in the many forms that addiction presents itself.
When your body physically becomes dependent on it, or you start suffering from withdraw. Having the shakes.
What do you think of Philanthropist drinkers, sure they might have a few shots every day but they just built the new high school out of their own pocket.
Well, if they're just doing because they can. Sure whatever, I don't care. But if they really need as in addicted then they probably should cool it.
Oh.
Well then I disagree. I think someone who is mentally dependent on it is also an alcoholic.
What is your definition of mentally dependent? Someone who is compelled to do it, or someone who wants to do it, but still has choice.
People who are physically dependent still have choice.
Mentally dependent as in they feel they can't face the day if they don't have a drink. If they theoretically miss a drink they won't shake and go into withdrawal, but they are still dependent.
I would say that anyone who drinks enough to experience consistent negative outcomes from it but continues to do so anyway, is an alcoholic regardless if they are actually physically or mentally dependent on it or not.
somebody who drinks over the limit.. I've never known anybody personally who was an alcoholic but whenever I see somebody or know that somebody drinks a lot it's really sad. People usually outcast them and ignore them but they're just people with problems that need help too.
And when I say personally, I mean as a close friend or somebody who I'd consider a friend or a family member. Not just people in general.
I haven't known an alcoholic but I say it's a person who drinks way too much on a regular basis.
Someone who is addicted to alcohol.
My definition of an alcoholic is someone who feels they need to drink. Not just need to drink to have a good time at the party. Not even drinking every weekend until they pass out. They feel they need to drink, period.
That's not to say that alcohol only causes problems for alcoholics, though. They shouldn't be driving if they've had too much, and sometimes there's a really good reason why those inhibitions were there before they got rid of them.
Probably two ways, the first is people who has a physical dependence. The second is basically alcohol abuse, which often leads to physical addiction - people who drink (relatively frequently) as a means of assuaging their own negative emotions. Basically the 'self-medicating' types. sheepishly raises hand.
I got trashed on Listerine last night, so don't feel too bad.
??? I didn't even think that would be possible? I know there's a bit of ethanol in there but... (which is why I heard Listerine isn't not good for you - damages the enamel.)
You can get trashed on Listerine, but it's not recommended. Stick with real beverage-grade stuff if you can.
(Can you imagine someone social drinking with Listerine in a martini glass?)
Ewww... Especially if it's bubble gum or orange flavored... I kind of liked the bubble gum flavor my dentist gave me to spit in when I was a kid... but thinking of drinking that....
I think an alcoholic is someone who is so physically and mentally dependent on it that they can't get through simple day-to-day tasks without failing because they haven't had a drink yet. I don't believe an alcoholic is someone who just enjoys a drink everyday.
You guys know half of the things i say here are jokes right...
I see an alcoholic as someone who has a dependence on alcohol and literally cannot go a day without being desperate for a drink. I see them as someone who sees alcohol in a way that I (someone who eats when I'm bored or in distress - which is a majority of the day) see food.
A person who can't control how much they drink once they start drinking. I often decided to have two beers, and ended up drinking until it was physically impossible for me to drink any more for whatever reason. People in AA refer to this as getting 'accidentally drunk'. And it doesn't have to happen every time a person drinks for them to be considered alcoholic.
Someone that drinks alcohol a shit ton.
