This is the first thing to come to mind. We are all equal . I don't really have anything to say other than everyone should be able to play any game they want without feeling like a lesser person. Its just a video game, games are supposed to be fun, if a game isn't fun it isn't worth playing.
Damn, that's messed up... I don't really play games much anymore, but whenever I did I was almost always some sort of female summoner (actually, I think the only MMOs I really every played were Everquest, Guild Wars and World of Warcraft, at least until my free trial ran out)... I never got that, but only my avatar was female and this was before audio chat was integrated into games...
I always thought RPGs were largely female, especially out of all video game types... Probably because I like them, especially Final Fantasy, and I suck at being male.
That's because girl gamers hide because of the sexist nature of the industry.
Case in point: all of my close female friends play multipla… moreyer games, but they refuse to use headsets as when they do they get bombarded with people saying they want to fuck them or that they should, quote, 'put down the controller and let your boyfriend handle things, princess'.
RPGs DO cater to males, for silly reasons. But girls still play them. Imagine what might happen if they were to treat both genders equally.
Girls love Final Fantasy. My friend's sister loves it. She won't give me the time of day but eventually i'll wear her down. She has that Lilly personality so most people can't handle it, i find it cute. Eventually she'll give up the hope of meeting Mr Right, and settle for Mr George.

Most importantly WHY DOES GENDER MATTER?
This is the first thing to come to mind. We are all equal . I don't really have anything t… moreo say other than everyone should be able to play any game they want without feeling like a lesser person. Its just a video game, games are supposed to be fun, if a game isn't fun it isn't worth playing.
I think developers mostly are men, who make games about themselves or things they know . I do not believe that they intentionally try to make this into a gender issue. I think if people want things to change, we need more games developed by women to even the field so it wouldn't be so one sided.
From one article. I know for a fact I play RPG's an did not complete this so thats already one more guy, data can be flawed etc. Anyway its not really the point.
From the bioware forum when I asked why there are more white heterosexual males than any other group, and from here when my request last year for inclusion of homosexual characters was slammed because most people are straight.
i'll take what you say from that other one is true however that thread you made had no mention of that being the case, the majority of cases against gay characters were that they were often flawed and pointless, only there to be gay and included for representation . Not to mention that was about characters as a whole, not playable characters.
WIthout the dog and rabbit it is 15 to 3. With jurassic park its 18 to 6. Three times as many males as women.
....So you actually originally counted the dog and the rabbit originally,.... okay nice to see what you compare men too..... And also have you got a list please? I'm not 100% familiar with the games. And considering TWAU and TWD where the main deutagroginsit is female and clearly no lesser to the male its not so terrible as the action often requires brute force.
That implies that sexism is based on how you show female characters, not to what extent you show them
...Which is true? I mean quality over quantity right? So you'd rather have 100's of daft women running around screaming for a heroic man to come save them? ist the same issue I have with gay characters, some are done great but the avalanche of poor stereotypical ones leads to them overall being poorly done and the call for more all the more self harming.
Gender shouldn't matter
Exactly so why was this thread made? Why should it matter to you if the protagonists male or female, it certainly doesnt to me or most other people, the game creator chose one that he/she felt fit the plot, thats all there is to it.
What do you mean men and women will never be exactly the same? Obviously there're biological differences, but there are no absolute mental differences.
Well there are many differences, (considering mental health etc, even with self report being lower in males there is still a difference) however again yes we will always be different in a physical sense, we are not going to become hybrids. However rather than scream for 100% similarity we can get to a point where they matter next to nothing at all. Like today in western countries honestly. We are never going to share bathrooms, sports, prisons etc its just not going to happen but it would if we were 100% equal. That doesnt mean we shouldn't strive for equality where possible but there are always limits.
And given recent years women are not that unrepresented in games where the protagonist actually matters and the gender isnt more reuqired my circumstance (the time setting etc) , I dont consider "dudebro" males to represent me at all (and likely you feel the same) as they arent relatable to anyone, but this isnt due to the gender but the poor character. Perhaps a more required choice is to have more balanced stereotypical characters in games overall not just one gender specifically.
Can you please quote me where I said male protagonists are automatically bad? Thanks.
Wow, four males and one female is even poorer than I was expecting.
Those four males are poor? with no knowledge of anything about them?
Not to mention the numeorus dry comments and "yawns" at straight male protagonists which o've often seen you saying (which may be the overdone trope in action FPS' but its important to not tar all protagonists with that,) FPS games aren't really a good reference for quality characters.
Thats three different stats right there so this one article isnt all that reliable but anyway. Also many games let you pick your gender unle… moress their is major voiceacting (some like mass effect with major voice acting)
They're three entirely seperate statistics mate.
Where do you get things like this from? You literally stick words in peoples mouths, no one i've seen has said this?
From the bioware forum when I asked why there are more white heterosexual males than any other group, and from here when my request last year for inclusion of homosexual characters was slammed because most people are straight.
What the exact list of this exactly, because if your including the dog and the rabbit I'm not really buying it. Oh and in jurrassic park it was 3 men, 3 women. Furthermore the fact that there are plenty of strong female characters in their series show the company isnt sexist or whatever.
WIthout the dog and … [view original content]
No, it's definitely a conspiracy. Guys get into a company and have to swear the oath of misogyny. You raise your right hand and recite, "I Your Name Here hereby swear that I hate women and anything to do with the female gender. So long as I live there will be no equality in storytelling, and any ideas I come up with that include a female protagonist will be scrapped as they are an enemy to the patriarchy which I have sworn my life to uphold the values of and protect. Meine Ehre heißt Treue." Then they inject a tracker into your arm so they can find you if your mind warps away from the patriarchy's values, and they have to reeducate you. Also, women in the industry are forced to swear that same oath and renounce their gender.
If you think that it has anything to do with creative whims or the experiences of individuals, then you are just a willing tool of the patriarchy, because it's as intentional as intentional gets.
I don't believe its a huge conspiracy theory.
I think developers mostly are men, who make games about themselves or things they know . I … moredo not believe that they intentionally try to make this into a gender issue. I think if people want things to change, we need more games developed by women to even the field so it wouldn't be so one sided.
No surprise to me. I've heard statistics like this before.
Unlike a lot of popular games, which still rely on the Gritty White Dude protagonist, RPGs allow you to play as someone that represents you in a much wider range. While it's not too hard for most people to slip into any kind of role while playing, I imagine being able to relate to your player character more makes it a lot more appealing.

Of course they would, and, let's say, "interested people" would come up with 10 (or more) giant tomes of "evidence" to suggest that women actually constituted 60% of the military in WWII.
I feel like you're trying to challenge me but honestly that just sounds awesome.
Also, I feel like you're trying to come up with something implausible, but it's not. Maybe women weren't on the frontlines, but quite a few of them were working as spies and in-combat nurses, and decorated for their military work. Here's a neat article on a few of them--the Russian sniper with 309 confirmed kills stood out to me the most, personally speaking. You tried to make it even more specific with "minority" female, but here's the wiki page for Noor Inayat Khan, the Indian-American spy at the bottom of that list.
Women had a huge role in World War II--both in their direct involvement, and back on the homefront where they took over men's labor and performed tasks just as easily as a man could. Don't discredit their involvement.
Yes, I agree that more women and different kind of people play video games nowdays, so we also need different kind of protagonists.
But... let's face it, our world isn't yet on that point where everyone accepts each other as they are, so if some AAA studio would make a video game where the protagonist is a gay or a transsexual, they would loose a lot money, because over 50% of worlds straight men wouldn't buy it. The profit would be very minimal, conserning making AAA games is very expensive nowdays.
haha, i always wanted to play Dungeons and dragons. I never knew anyone who would play it , other than the embarrassing people at the comic book store. I went there once, and well you can't bring women around those guys because they smell like BO, and Taco Bell.
Really? Oh my god. I am a guy; I love playing RPG's. Role Playing Games are very story-oriented and have good action and plot. They aren't like the over popular COD and Silent Hills or REs. Stating this with no concrete or ANY evidence shows that you don't know about RPGs. Please don't do this anymore; stating your opinion like it's fact.
Huh. Unfortunately for me, all the girls I know are too busy having their phones glued to their face. They can't even compliment or have a decent discussion. They can only insult, speak with abnormal speed, talk about Social Media, or almost cry from a reference to a show they like. None of them even play Video Games.

Velvet Assassin, anyone?
If you don't know what that is, here's a quote from the Steam page:
"Inspired by the fascinating story and unbreakable spirit of British secret agent Violette Szabo, players take control of Violette Summer, a beautiful World War II spy deep behind enemy lines with no support or official backing from the British Government."
It's on sale for PC right now! Get it while it's hot! Sure, it's not a triple A COD game, but think about this way: it's not a triple A COD game.

That's what it all boils down too, but unfortunately, due to the fact that it's already a male-dominated field, it can be challenging for women to climb up the rungs.

Gender shouldn't matter, but it clearly does to some people, otherwise there wouldn't be far more male protagonists in games than female ones.

Good. Games where you can take on fascinating new roles and develop your own mental story are great, and we should invite more people to play them.
But of course there's sexist creeps somehow making this into a bad thing. Do you even have girlfriends?
Well i am bowing out now. I got better things to do than argue about things i can't change or have any influence on, i said my say, so i'm good.
No surprise to me. I've heard statistics like this before.

Most video games are like fantasy books, honestly.
Would WWII fps games be better if they had gritty minority female protagonists?
Of course they would, and, let's say, "interested people" would come up with 10 (or more) giant tomes of "evidence" to suggest that women actually constituted 60% of the military in WWII.
Is this something just to argue about I don't really get it. Its not like anyone here has control over any of this.

So does that mean if i ask a random girl to play dungeons and dragons, she WON'T call me a basement dweller?
It's a percentage of the players, not the population sadly.
