  • i dont think they are making a sequel. those were just making fun of the milking shit of many movies. although i never seen any confirmation of a 23 jump street, has there been a confirmation?? if so ehh idk what to think of that

Loved 22 Jump Street. Not happy they're making another sequel though.

  • Does the first half of Season 5 of The Walking Dead count as a long ass movie? Because I haven't seen any good movies this year.

Ask me next year when Pitch Perfect 2 comes out.

  • generic hollywood movie 1 was the best by far

  • I could say that you should go see the rest, like right now. But you can probably wait until all the movies come out on dvd first.

I'm probably the only one that hasnt seen any of the hobbit movies... yet at least.

  • Oh come on, the sequel was SO much better.

generic hollywood movie 1 was the best by far

  • The Hobit: Return of the King was amazing! I watched it today!

  • lol, Return of the King?

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Even as a TMNT fan, I burst out laughing when I saw this movie because there's just so many things wrong with it and I could spend all day nitpicking. Good times.

In all seriousness though... Guardians of The Galaxy, Edge of Tomorrow, HTTYD 2 and Dawn of The Planet of The Apes were all pretty decent, I guess. They didn't make me facepalm every five minutes, so there.

  • I know I'm a bit late (as 2014 is almost over), but I would suggest Dawn of the Plant of the Apes (and the film before it, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) to everybody. Really, really enjoyable films.

  • Yeah, Dawn is my favorite movie of 2014 and one of my all time favorites, so is Rise.

  • Damn right. :) Dawn of the planet of the apes is my second favorite film of 2014.

Interstellar, Nightcrawler, and Edge of Tomorrow are my picks as of right now. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Guardians of the Galaxy, Fury, and The Imitation Game were also very good. I still need to see Whiplash, Birdman, and Boyhood.

I'd consider myself a pretty big film buff, but the number of high-quality movies getting limited releases this year makes them pretty difficult to see. Thank God for digital releases, I guess.

  • Loved the credits sequence after that movie that poked fun at how series can be milked to the point of absurdity. It was a very self-aware movie in general that understood it was a sequel.

  • I too, am a big film buff. I'm starting to lean more towards films rather than games now. (I still love video games though) You should see Whiplash out of those 3 films in my opinion. Seriously, that movie had me hooked to it like no other movie this year. Definitely my favorite movie of 2014.

I also have to see Interstellar. I'm so friggin pissed I didn't see it. From what I've heard, is it like 2001: A Space Oddyssey? No spoilers pls.

  • Bump: Since it's the end of the year, I'd like to see what you guys' top 10 favorite films are of 2014. :) I'm almost done with mine, I just have to see Birdman and John WIck in order to ensure my list will be official. As of now, this is currently what I have.

  • Very similar, but less abstract. It's a very polarizing film, so people will either walk away amazed or not getting it at all. If you like any of Nolan's previous stuff or 2001, it's right up your alley.

2001 was, crazy visuals and confusing symbolism aside, a story about man's search for meaning in the universe. Interstellar tackles a very similar theme but in a different way. No spoilers here :)

Also, Interstellar gave me the same sense of wonder that I had when I saw Gravity, my favorite film of 2013. The visuals are incredible. They avoided using green screens in favor of projecting footage so that the effects are in-camera. Say what you will about Nolan and his screenplays trying to outdo each other with confusing factors, but the man is an overachiever when it comes to visual effects.

  • The final Hobbit film was probably my favorite of the new trilogy, but Jackson has definitely began to rely on CGI a lot more than he did in the original 3 films. He still has an eye for directing massive battle scenes, but that comic relief character and fights that kind of "jumped the shark" held it back from surpassing Return of the King. That movie won Best Picture for a reason.

Saw the final part of The Hobbit earlier this afternoon, the battle scenes were awesome as usual, and the orc designs were really interesting to look at too!

  • I think you mean The Battle of the Five Armies

The Hobit: Return of the King was amazing! I watched it today!

    1. Birdman
    2. The Grand Budapest Hotel
    3. Guardians of the Galaxy
    4. Dom Hemingway
    5. The Boxtrolls
    6. X-Men: Days of Future Past
    7. Mr. Peabody & Sherman
    8. Edge of Tomorrow
    9. The Lego Movie
    10. Wish I Was Here

there is still a lot I want to see. The Zero Theorem, Big Hero 6, Gone Girl, Inherent Vice, St. Vincent, American Sniper, The Gambler , and a bunch of others.

  • Wow, almost half of those movies on your list I haven't even seen. It's a nice list tho. I'd like to see the diversity of these lists.

Lucky guy got to see Birdman. ;_; I wish a theater near me had that movie.

Well someone likes superhero movies. :) Or at least comic book movies. (Honestly, I'm not a big fan myself, but there are plenty of enjoyable ones)

  • Oh, well I've only seen Guardians of the Galaxy out of the three movies you mentioned. I saw X-Men: Days of Future Past for blu-ray at Costco, but I couldn't but it. -_- I also forgot Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out this year. I feel ashamed lol.

But I did really like Guardians of the Galaxy. As you could see, it is in my (unofficial) top 10. :)

  • I honestly haven't watched a movie from 2014 lol.

  • Hey guys, I think this year greatest film was Guardians of The Galaxy, cause there was a lot of action (really a lot), plenty of strong colours and tones ( why i said that?) There were ships, really cool ships, and of course THE MUSIC!!! that soundtrack was awesome, that entrance to the title was pure genius, I mean my god who doesn´t love "Hooked on a feeling". OH WAIT there was a genetic alterated talking raccoon with more pride than size. Well i think im taking too long on this post. (getting to the point) anyway I think my point its that this is "the movie" of the year (my opinion) and i also think ( this is for TELLTALE, really think about it) that Guardians of The Galaxy could be a great upcoming telltale series, think about an original story like the ones only Telltale does, and all the rest you can already tell how great it would be, mysteries in the galaxy, a prequel a, sequel, an alternate universe maybe a ucrony who knows, i really think that telltale would make another masterpiece for the collection with this one i would definitively buy it for my PS4 and my iphone, i would play it in class and then get home and turn on the PS4 and keep going with the adventure.Oh shit I think im getting a meltdown. PLEASE Telltale CONSIDER IT. It would bring new audience to the family. (Marvel) you can guess what that means. This would be fun and entertaining for a lot of people. Oh and keep up the good work : ) HAVE A GREAT 2015 from Chile.

Bump: I finally saw Birdman!!!! However, I'm going to be honest. I felt a little underwhelmed for the movie despite my big excitement over it. There were a few confusing parts that I couldn't wrap my head around, and the ending (no spoilers) was confusing. However, the entire cast in the film delivered fantastic performances! Especially of those by Edward Norton and Michael Keaton. To me, this is the type of movie I have to watch again in order to understand some segments of it. Despite a bit of confusion, this movie still makes it into my top 10 because of the casts performances. There were some pretty funny scenes in the movie as well.

Edit: After looking at a few analysis vids on the internet, I'm finally starting to gain a better understanding of the movie.

  • Depends if the list means movies watched n 2014 or movies released in 2014.

I think you mean The Battle of the Five Armies

  • Seems like you're really into superhero, sci-fi, and animated movies. :) Ain't nothin wrong with that tho. Some of those movies you mentioned are great!

Whiplash isn't exactly like those movies, but I would REALLY recommend it. :) It's hard to find though. :( Another movie I'd recommend is Birdman. Just be prepared to be confused because I sure was when I watched it.

  • Unfortunately I didn't get to watch a lot of movies this year, But two great film I saw were The grand Budapest hotel and Frank. I'm also looking forward to watching Birdman, Nightcrawler, Calvary and Whiplash.

  • I heard a lot of good things about Frank. I'll look into 8t probably later on in the year. I do have to say that you should most definitely see Whiplash out of those movies you mentioned. It was so Damn intense and satisfying. The only thing is that movie has a limited release, so its going to be pretty hard to find it.

I Just saw Birdman and was absolutely blown away! Some of the best cinematography I've ever seen, absolutely incredible performances from Michael Keaton, Ed Norton, and Emma Stone, and a ton of metaphors and symbolism I'm still attempting to understand. It easily tops my favorite movies of 2014 list, but I can understand that some people aren't fans of "artsy" movies. It was very surreal, to be sure, but I haven't been that glued to the screen since Gravity.

I found a theater near me that's showing Whiplash tomorrow, and I can't wait to go see that! I also saw Boyhood and was very impressed (12 years is a massive commitment). It also had the most realistic writing and performances that I'd ever seen. A lot of screenwriters struggle to create dialogue that sounds like it was spoken by real people, but Boyhood absolutely excelled there. I didn't enjoy it as much as other movies this year, but Richard Linklater has earned my respect. Another big one I saw was Grand Budapest Hotel. It was an enjoyable Wes Anderson film, but I really have to be in the right mood for his work. He's very distinctive and still manages to impress me, but his movies just aren't my thing. They're kind of growing on me, though.

As for 2015 releases, I enjoyed American Sniper, but don't think it was Oscar material. It's also pretty cheap that they were able to do a limited release so it was up for 2014 Oscar Season. Selma did the same thing, but I haven't seen that yet. My favorite so far would have to be Predestination starring Ethan Hawke. It was a very confusing time-travel film that felt like something Nolan would make, and I loved every moment of it. Very unconventional, but very smart. My brain hurts every time I try to understand it. The less you know about it, the more you'll enjoy it.

  • I looked at a lot of other analysis videos about Birdman, and I have to say I'm starting to have a stronger grasp on the movies metaphorical messages. Some are still a little hard to understand though.

Dude, you most definitely need to see Whiplash! Tell me what you think about it. :)

The only 2015 movie that catches my eye is the new James Bond movie, Spectre. I saw a review about Predestination from Chrisstuckmann. I heard it was a very good movie. I might look into it.

  • I thought maleficent was good and big hero 6. In my opinion 2014 was not a great year for cinema.

  • I can't wait until Birdman is available for purchase. The behind the scenes are going to be incredible, and it's worth multiple viewings. Also, people will be able to use footage in analysis videos, which will help.

My theater shows it in 2 hours. I'm very excited!

2015 is the year of the blockbuster. I enjoy blockbusters, but it's the smaller releases like Nightcrawler and Birdman that I really end up impressed by. The hype for Star Wars VII is real, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

Chris Stuckmann is one of the few critics I can trust consistently. I will see most things that he recommends. Predestination is a mind trip, but a very enjoyable one. I thought it handled time travel much better than Rian Johnson's Looper, even though I enjoyed that too. Most of the fun comes afterward, however, trying to mentally piece everything together. If you like mind-bending movies that you can't stop thinking about, then you should check it out. I watched it on iTunes, even though it's showing in some theaters.

  • Really? I thought 2013 was the worst year for cinema, The only good movies that come to mind in 2013 are 12 Years a Slave, Her, The World's End, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

  • Gravity was my favorite film in 2013, but I also loved The World's End and 12 Years a Slave. Maybe it's just because I'm partial to Alfanso Cuaron.

I thought 2014 had a lot of great movies, personally.
