Do you think Bigby seemed too good a fighter in TWAU compared to Fables?

edited January 2015 in The Wolf Among Us

(I played TWAU first and then read Fables)

In the comics; Bigby's hand to hand is almost never shown:

  • He has a fist fight in Volume 13, but his punches literally knock his opponent off his feet and once into the air...
  • He grabs someone's wrist and pins them against the wall in Volume 1
  • During War Stories Bigby is shown fighting violently like a brawler when he is a Werewolf.
  • There are times in the comic where Bigby simply sneaks up on someone and breaks their neck
  • Werewolves of the Heartlands shows Bigby as being able to rip enemies to shreds with one hand in his 2nd Form.

Bigby seems to be a lot more powerful in the comics; in spite of his centuries of experience and his Military training, he fights with brute force instead of (I guess you can say) skill like in the game.

I can understand TellTale making the fights dramatic to keep us immersed, I mean if the Woodsman fight was Bigby just beating him down no problem then it wouldn't be that fun. But Bigby seems to be 'weaker' in the game than in the comic.

What do we think?

  • Doesn't the game take place before the comics though?

  • Yeah... but I doubt Bigby would become that powerful in the space of around 20 years...

  • True just saying though. In the end though it does come down to game design. It wouldn't be that much fun if your the overpowered big bad wolf killing everything in one hit......actually that sounds like fun.

  • Also, Bigby wolf's out A LOT more in the comics, it's like his default form for fighting :P

  • Yeah it's gotta be for immersion. If the hero was just a powerhouse right off the bat, people would expect Bigby could never lose and would have nothing to fear from Bloody Mary, Beast, or the Tweedles. The first fight felt important to gauge on just how strong we should expect Bigby to be throughout the rest of the game (tough, but not invincible). This is especially important to those new to the Fables stuff and it leaves the player with a feeling of glee when the grand finale fight happens.

  • Understandable of course...

But Bigby is so free with his transformation in the comics though... Maybe in a future TWAU project, Snow will give him free reign to transform whenever in a situation...

  • Whereas most video games typically "amp up" the character to make it feel more like a video game, I actually feel that Telltale took some liberties in making Bigby a little weaker in some areas in order to add more dramatic tension. For instance, Bigby relies heavily on his sense of smell from I offhandedly hear about the series, but his sense of smell only gets minor references in the game - several of which are downplayed. Still, though, they use it to good effect. For instance, the drama of Episode 1's cliffhanger would have been moot if Bigby could use his sense of smell to detect all was not as it seemed at face value.

  • Do you read the comics Blind?

  • I've read a few a while back before Season 1 came out to acquaint myself with the series. However, I was mostly basing what I said off of how others such as yourself describe Bigby in the comics. Bigby's sense of smell and strength are two typical parts of Bigby's character that I hear others say are mildly downplayed, likely from Telltale attempting to make him more relatable to players while also adding tension as I said earlier.

  • He is also very, very quick and once in the comics he says to some Fables that "When you can sneak up on me you can sneak up on anyone"

    Bloody Mary could :P

  • True... Yet at the same time he gives the "sneak up on me speech" he moves from sitting against a tree to leaning on a tree behind the Fables he is training in the space of a few seconds...

Although, Bigby is a more skilled fighter in the game so I can appreciate that XD

As a human, he seems stronger in the comics
As a werewolf or just wolfing out he seems stronger in the game.

In Animal farm he was scared of being shot by ehm, Goldilocks was it? Or at least a couple of shots incapacitated him.
When he was going back to the homelands in Wolves he had to be on guard alot, even though he had help from his son.

In the game he just seems unstoppable. But maybe its because Bloody Mary was weak in comparison to the homelands minions. Which very well could be. And Goldilocks probably used Silver bullets, but still.

  • Goldilock's doesn't use silver, she uses the best hunting shells that money can buy!

Bigby does get outmatched in the comics, but like TWAU it's all for dramatic effect :)

  • The title, and the post had me confused a little bit after reading (title says Bigby fights so good compared to comic book, while your main post states Bigby seems to be weaker compared to the comic. Don't those two statements kinda contradict each other?).

Anyways, I can think of couple of reasons why Bigby is weaker in game than he is in the comics:

    1. Comics came out first before the Game, and Telltale didn't want Bigby to become too powerful (especailly in his human form?). Can't imagine it would be an interesting game if he basically overpowered everyone.
    2. Even though he has gotten more cunning and tactful, because of his nature as the Wolf, Bigby will always use the Brute force method first. If that doesn't work, he'll use other tactics.
  • I think what I was trying and apparently failing to say was that Bigby actually has skill in fighting in the game and in the comics he uses pure brute force instead...

  • Bigby got "Buffed" in the game :P

  • He might have just given up on holding it in in the 20 year span.

yea they nerfed bigby hard in pretty much every aspect if they kept him the way he is in the comics he most likely would have solved the murders much quicker and he would have known snow was not dead

  • He was toned down ability wise for the sake of plot. If it were the comic he would transform full werewolf all the time and decimate his opponents. Telltale just wanted the fights to seem a little more even and did so by nerfing him unfortunately.

  • He doesn't hold it in like the Hulk with controlling his anger; Bigby transforms at will....

He might have just given up on holding it in in the 20 year span.

  • One thing that really bumped me was the fact that the 13th floor witches don't appear at all in the game (just as a reference)... Frau Totenkinder, in most of the times, has a huge part in helping Bigby. I understand that telltales wants to introduce new characters (and i can appreciated that - I freaking love Bloody Mary), but the whole thing in the comics - about how Bigby solves mysteries - is how he uses the other fables.

  • It's all about the plot :P

  • Yeah I agreed, and let's face it.... Bigby is also almost unstoppable in the comics in both forms. I just think that in the game, Bigby's abilities are very uneven.

  • I just really like Frau Totenkinder :(

  • Cuz she hurt Bigby when she probably knows that he is being controlled! Totenkinder knows a lot...

I'll bet she reveals that information to Snow somehow and that's why Snow orders Cinderella to assassinate Frau!!
