How much can a fanbase change your opinion on a fandom/franchise?

I would say that a fanbase can change my thinking of a franchise. For example, I absolutely loved Supernatural but at times it is very annoying to watch due to the fact a lot of the stupid ships and what not the fandom makes keeps popping up in my head.

Also if a general fanbase is very arrogant/frustrating, I tend for some reason to relate that to whatever the fandom itself is. Not something I'm really proud of doing but something that just happens without thinking. I hope I can change that.

So yeah, how much can a fanbase change your opinion on a fandom/franchise?

Well, there's one guy who seems pretty great, but a lot of his fanbase is completely petty and vitriolic : Jesus.

  • Well I admit I used to love the game series Call of Duty, but the Online community pretty much ruined that for me, if that counts lol.

  • I'll form my own opinion on the game, the community never really concerns me, it might make a bit less likely to play online but besides that

The worst fandom is probably the Zelda one. Even though it's my most favorite game series of all time, a lot of the fans are ungrateful idiots.

I, for one, disliked (and still do) a chunk of Dragon Age fanbase also known as "Cullenites" and their idol in particular. He doesn't seem so insufferable in DA:I, but this didn't affect his fanbase.

However, they didn't change my opinion of the franchise. There are other things that could, but I'd rather not go into that.

  • I'm an Andersite.

  • Wasn't this question answered on DA thread already? Yes, you should, definitely.

  • I wish my rig was powerful enough to play DA:I without lag, but we can't always get what we want.

  • Person of Interest randomly has this Shaw X Root thing that feels extremely forced, I have no idea if it was the fan base, but I think it is considering how random and forced it felt

  • Well, fuck you, too.

Joking, of course, but it's really a pain to play DA:I on anything above the lowest settings and I reckon it will stay like that for years, as I'm not about to upgrade or buy a next-gen console.

  • Does it cost slot of money upgrade pc's? I thought you would only need to upgrade the graphics card or whatever.

  • Well, maybe, but since my country's currency got really cheap (you could get 8 units of currency for one dollar, now it's twice as much and that's only after it went down a bit) and PC's counterparts have gotten more expensive, I can't really afford to buy something like that now. Not to mention that I'm a college student, so I can only rely on my stipend, since I'm not yet working. That's why I mentioned "years" in my post.

The MGS fans as of now. Ever since of the damn change of David Hayter to Kiefer Sutherland has turned this fanbase into a war. It's either Team Hayter or Team Sutherland, whose side are you on? Both sides are complete dicks of which one you prefer. if you prefer Hayter, then you're some fanboy who was never a fan of the MGS games. If you prefer Sutherland, then you're not a true fan because the change doesn't bother you. Personally I hate the Sutherland side more than the Hayter one. Because anytime you mention Hayter, you're called pathetic and a loser who can't accept change. I'm ashamed that apart of it And god forbid you doubt the god Kojima.

It makes me lose almost all interest in the series.

The anime fanbase for me. I used to be an otaku till late 2013 when I learn how "otakus" is bad thing (meaning you're obssesed at something) and then I started to look at the anime fanbase in a bad way....mainly in real life. I join the anime club as a freshmen and some of the people in their don't talk or do anything but watch anime...even when we were not in the anime club. So I stop watching anime until the end of last year. I don't watch that much anime anymore though and I don't consider myself as an otaku too.

  • I can't believe no one mentioned Kenny. Kenny fans made me hate Kenny. Jane fans made me hate Jane.

I have this saying, "I try not to let my hatred of people get in the way of my love of things," but dear god, has it been hard to follow my own advice as of late.

All fandoms are full of wretched, vile assholes though, I have yet to find a fandom that is pleasant to be in. Homestucks come closest, but that's just because they are so out of their fucking minds to the point of hateception. They hate themselves. It's...hard to explain. But that's the only exception.

  • These forums made me realize how much bad writing Season 2 had shrugs

  • Nate fans make me love Nate.

If it was a multiplayer game the fan base will affect my opinion on it because I wouldn't want to be playing in a game with someone who takes the game very seriously

  • Season 2 = Kenny Chronicles

  • Muhammad fans too. Bunch of stans...

  • GTA -- I love those games, but they have one of the widest, most immature fanbase I've seen.

Indie music (especially underground hip-hop).-- MF Doom fans are the worst. 99% pasty teenagers who think Doom = God's Gift, not Doom = white noise.

Punk Rock -- Who knew that a genre about drugs, sex and anarchy would attract such a collection of judgmental pricks.

  • Some of the Doctor Who fanbase really turned me away from watching the show
