Why do some people hate popular things?

edited January 2015 in General Chat

I decided I'd make a thread on a question I've always asked but never got an actual answer for: Why do people hate popular things?

Whenever I go watch a video of a famous Celebrity I always find comments that find ways to dislike the famous person, most of the times they can't find an answer but sometimes they say they hate the celebrity because of their fans, meaning someone is being hated for the actions of others, sometimes it's for legitimate reasons but most of the times I find the reasons more of a form of cyberbullying.

The same goes for popular movies and games, examples are Frozen and The Last of Us. People consistently hate them for their ongoing popularity, why is it that so many hate for popularity? These people often find the smallest things to argue about, it just feels to me like people feel a form of jealousy for not being one of the first people to watch the movie or play the game before it became mainstream.

So what do you guys think on this topic? Do you know why people might hate things for their popularity? Is it a legitimate reason to hate something? Have you ever found yourself disliking something due to it's popularity?

  • it just feels to me like people feel a form of jealousy for

I don't think it's really about that or popularity. It's probably that they believe that "thing" doesn't deserve as much praise as it gets, like they might think it's overrated.

  • You can't tip your fedora and gain hipster XP if you like popular things.

  • COD is overrated because it's the same thing every year but recieves fairly high ratings by game critics such as IGN

Frozen is overrated because...... people praise it just for the song

Minecraft is overrated because its a game which you build until you get bored but is one of the most played games on Earth

Pewdiepie is overrated because he is annoying as fuck and yet he is the most subscribed youtube channel

I just don't like some things that are popular. TLOU never appealed to me and I thought Frozen was just okay. It doesn't help when you see them damn near everywhere and people continuously act as if they should be worshipped.

Basically, I think most "haters" are just annoyed by all the hype that refuses to die down.

  • Jealousy, mostly.

  • Was just about to say the same thing. Know why guys verbally bash Justin Bieber? Because a big part of his fanbase are teenage girls.

    Jealousy, mostly.

  • The world of hipsters my friend! I will never acknowledge that I am a hipster (cause I'm not[Internet sarcasm]) w-they hate mainstream stuff and try to avoid it.

  • most really is because pf jealousy. like TLOU or some crazy people that hate TWDG. they hate it cuz they havent played it or cant play it or are just weird like that. TLOU ppl who hate that game its cuz theyre xbox fans or are "purist" of gameplay only games, or are just stupid hipsters. now for frozen it was good, but it is extremely overrated just because of one song and those weird people that suddenly think its cool to watch kids movies ( not that it isnt, but a few years back they were the ones criticizing). and as for "artists" i hate shit like those ymca motherfuckers because they arent hip hop. they claim to be hip hop but they arent. and mmost music now a days is a but a bunch of garbage. no meaningful lyrics, same old sounding "beats" and stupid ass messages. so yeah i hate something that pretends to be something that i love, dont fuck with hip hop. as for that edm or house music or whatever the fuck they want to call it, i dont mind it its that its everywhere in remixes and it gets annoying at times.

  • I don't hate TLOU because it's popular, I hate TLOU because i genuinely didn't like that game and i think it's overrated.

  • hate? really? and hate it cuz its overrated is really kinda hating on it cuz its popular.

  • Overrated doesn't mean popular. Overrated is not as good as people make it out to be. People treat this game like it's the second coming of Christ. It's not.

Its because sometimes you feel like your forced to like things just because other people tell you that you should and if you say you dont people accuse you of lying or whatever. The world would be a boring place if everyone liked the same shit and nothing new would ever be created. I like black metal and plenty of people hate it I wouldn't force it on anyone but frozen fans are aloud to shove that god damned overated Disney puke of a song down our throats.

Hitler was popular amongst certain circles

  • I think hating on things that are popular are often too confused with hating on things that are overrated.

Like @Gary-Oak feelings about the Last of Us, I for one hate Daryl Dixon on the show and think he is the most overrated character in any television series I have watched so far.

So yeah, hating on something that you personally find overrated can be confused for people just trashing on something popular.

And he's been shown to be extremely obnoxious and sets a bad example for kids with all the stunts he's pulled. People don't hate JB just because they're jealous of his popularity, trust me.

  • Realy because popular things are overated. Are you saying justin bieber is as good as people say he is. I think popular and overated tend to go hand in hand

  • but he is saying that he hates, HATES, the game cuz its overrated. and what does over rated mean? that a lot of people are saying that it is greater than it is. so he hates it cuz people like it more than anything, so thats hating cuz a lot of people like it.

  • People dislike things because of their own personal reasons, not solely because they're popular. Of course, people will want to voice their opinion more if something they don't like is popular and receives more value than it should (that's what overrated is).

For example, I'm also one of the people who didn't like TLOU very much, but I'm sure there's nobody who hates just because it's popular, but because it's not that great (main characters and ending), but it still acheived critical acclaim by almost everyone.

  • it is all opinions it has nothing to do with the thing being popular people don't have to like something because many others do but what i will say is the last of us imo is the most overrated thing i have seen in a long time the fans act like it is the messiah of gaming and they act like it is perfect it isn't no game is perfect

  • Yep, I don't hate popular things just because they're popular, and I'm "too good" for that vast moronic crowd. There are a lot of popular things that I like, too. But when I do hate something that is popular, and everyone keeps bringing up how great it is all the time, well, that's just annoying.

  • It's not the "same fucking thing." I'm hating on something that is popular because I find it overrated, not because its popular. There are lots of people/things that are popular that rightly deserve to be so.

    jamex1223 posted: »

  • Because most popular things actually do suck from a critical perspective and a lot of this is subjective.

For example: The Big Bang Theory is the most popular comedy of all time, yet it doesn't use any actual jokes and its characters are horribly over-the-top stereotypes that poke fun at people with unavoidable conditions. It is disgraceful programming and yet people just suck it up in droves.

Why? Because popular things appeal to the casual audiences. These people don't like to think much, are entertained by style over substance, and prefer hot gays/gals in the main roles because that apparently matters. This all contributes to making a critically terrible show and when one of these reviews get good reviews constantly it is because the reviewer in question is trying to get more readers and/or are being payed-off.

  • Then surely they'd dislike every successful, famous person.

    Jealousy, mostly.

  • Exactly

  • They can only be overrated if they are rated higher than what a person thinks it should be, by the majority, so popular and overrated go hand in hand.

  • Popular and overrated go hand in hand. Most all "popular" things will be viewed by a minority as "overrated" and this minority will often be labeled as "hipsters" because they aren't a part of the mainstream that likes the popular in question. They aren't always hipsters per say, because to my knowledge they hate things for the specific reason that they are popular, but I digress, both popular and overrated are related.

It's not the "same fucking thing." I'm hating on something that is popular because I find it overrated, not because its popular. There are lots of people/things that are popular that rightly deserve to be so.

  • As my grandfather always said,

If it ain't whiskey, women, or weapons i ain't interested.

YOU R absolutely correct, i am jealous of people who love POPULAR THINGS, I Dream to be a member of society. To be a wage slave is my dream, working for six dollars a hour. I want to be poor. ME
