Playthroughs, but why?

edited January 2015 in General Chat

My question is, how do you watch playthroughs and how do they affect your game play and purchases?

So as of late I've become acquainted with ManlyBadasshero. Not lying, I enjoy the videos, but, it gave me some questions about playthroughs in general

I'm watching Minx play through Harvester, it's an older game I probably wouldn't spend the money (especially watching her play it - it looks like a good game too, but it takes away the mystery but is not so great I want to buy it on my own).

Manlybadass played through Lisa, I started watching it, after a couple episodes I stopped, because it looks so good I want to buy it and play it on my own. On the other hand, he has playthroughs from Life is strange and some other recent games, and I refuse to watch because I know I want to spend the money and play it myself (both because I want to support the company and because I want to experience myself, and I'm not trying to suck up here).

I'm sure there are games I started looking at the playthrough and lost all interest (honestly, Resident Evil was probably one. I really hate stealth games, not that the stories are bad, I just get bored watching them and frustrated playing them)

  • I think watching playthroughs are good for people who want to be part of gaming culture but aren't good at/dont like playing games. I personally don't watch them unless I cant decide whether or not to buy a game, then I kind of treat them like a gameplay trailer

I like watching playthroughts, let's plays, whatever you wanna call them. Is their reactions to certain things in the game. For example, I love seeing people's shocked faces when Kenny returned in Season 2 or when Lily shoots Carley. I also watch them for a game I'm interested in, but not sure whether I would like it or not.

That's the thing, I think I've watch a playthrough of a game I've play only once... The other time was watching Minx play Mad Father after Markiplier played it - and Misao (the other game of Mad Father's deveopper) was probably the only instance of me playing a game after watching the complete playthrough...

    There's a few reasons.

    1. I think a game seems interesting, but don't want to/know if I want to buy it. In this case, I watch one with no commentary. It helps with immersion.
    2. I enjoy seeing other peoples' reactions to games I like.
    3. If it's a game I've played before, I like to see what choices others make and compare them to my own playthroughs.
    4. I can't play the game myself because it's on a console I don't own.
  • You said Playthough in your title but playthrough in your body but whatever. Anyway its because some playthrough - ers or Lets Players are funny and do their schtick rather well and their colorful commentary just sort of blends in with the game itself and its nice to see other people's reactions or thoughts when playing a game you're on the fence about.

  • Fixed. Thanks.

That's probably why I prefer Minx to Markplier, from the bit I've seen. Markiplier's really nice, but I like the sarcastic, obscene stuff Minx does... Becasue I'm that kind of person...

  • I never thought that deep into it. I didn't like PewDiePie or Tobuscus (ew) and I straight up hate Two Best Friends but one of my favorite play throughs was darksydephil's Heavy Rain and can watch it over and over again even though I don't like him as a person the play through was one of the best I highly recommend it

I've personally never really found enjoyment in watching someone else play a game over the internet (with maybe a few occasional exceptions). To each their own I guess.

  • The only playthroughs I ever watch are the silly, ten-minute ones, where the player isn't really taking the game seriously and is mostly making fun of it. Otherwise, I'd rather not be spoiled, just in case I ever do decide to play the game myself some day. And if it's a game I know I will never be interested in playing, well, then why would I be interested in the playthrough?

  • I don't usually watch playthroughs to watch the gameplay, but to watch people's commentary on the game. For example, Game Grumps. Their commentary is the highlight of their channel.
